Recruiting Forum Football Talk XLIII

Reading between the lines of the media vitriol towards Butch, especially from Wes and 24/7, the fact that Brice has been outspoken and critical since he left 24/7, the fact that 24/7 moved Haney and the OpEd from the Tennesseean's sportswriter about playing favorites and revoking access...

I think it's a safe assumption that Butch busted out the ban hammer after that article and kicked Haney and Brice off campus.

I wonder if Brice will come back to work somewhere with a new administration?

Since everyone is over analyzing everything. I think that a hire will be made within the next week. Volquest is running a free trial for the next week. They've done numerous free trials before when UT news was hot and they've done them for various periods of time. If this coaching hire were most likely going to drag out, wouldn't they extend the trial more than a week?

I'm looking for anything here. :)

I don't think Gruden necessarily needs some huge head start on the recruiting process. He's Jon Gruden. His hire will send shockwaves through the CFB world. That's why I think the announcement could be delayed as long as the Monday after the Vandy game or even the SECCG weekend. Especially if current recruits know that something huge is about to happen.

It would almost be like a Black Friday-esque sale on committing to Tennessee. Limited time offer, supplies are scarce, and you better make a move now if you want to get in on it.

Gruden gets announced and recruits have 2-3 weeks to decide if they want to play for him and the Vols. He makes a few phone calls to elite players and could take advantage of the insane hype he and his presumably NFL-caliber staff would generate.

Very little time for him to get turned down or even for other coaches to negative recruit, but enough time for him to seal the deal on a monster class.

Gruden to Tenn would be arguably the biggest hire in college football history. I think every recruit he'd call would give us a serious look.

Hah. All in fun

I got sick of seeing Brice grind his ax. When you come with info with a bias it is hard to trust the info.

I don't discount everything he says. He's not Houston Kress just pumping everything that shows up in his inbox.

I still refuse to believe its Gruden, i was full bore back in the day and it took my heart awhile to recover. At this point im full blown Mullen, and possibly support him even over Gruden as a hire. In my eyes a guy whos developed Alex Smith, Tebow, Dak and Fitzgerald and has been active in the SEC the last nine years is more intriguing as a long term quality hire than Gruden. I think Gruden has a higher ceiling but a lower floor than Mullen. What mullen has done at MST is as good or better than what Franklin did at Vandy (MST is historically the 12th best team in the SEC) Also just imagine what the dude could do with a school thats actually capable of luring top recruits. In his 9 years at MST, as good as hes been, theyve only averaged 28th in the nation and 10th in the SEC as far as recruiting rankings. While UT has averaged 12th and 5th in the same time period and hes vastly exceeded the production UT has had in that time period, all while playing in the toughest division in all of football. Hes peaked there, he needs a bigger stage and id be stoked if he came here.

Basilio:

"I was calling it pure fantasy last week. I talked to some people and now there's some real smoke there."

Paraphrasing.

Too late you already fired him lol

Good to have you back on the Currie train, Bass. Or at least, for now. :)

As long as this keeps going the way it's looking, I'm full penitent of my previous sins, and fully supportive of Currie. If he trots Bobo out there though he will feel my wrath!

At least, you know, if he ever reads VN then he could read my posts. But they will be wrathful! :realmad:

Brice has been pretty bush league in his Twitter behavior but he still has contacts.

Brice is the one that tweeted we were hiring one of the other the other 2 candidates as UT was announcing Vitello. He is 0-1 so far.

I understand the idea of excitement, but a lot of these big time recruits come with big time egos, not even the football god Saban can just say "hey come here". They still have to have their egos stroked and convinced to commit by the best college coach of all time. I think if by some miracle it is Gruden, he can definitely sway some on name alone, but the big fish get to be big fish for a reason, they don't just bite on any shiny lure.

Why the hell is everyone on the Hill bending over backwards to kiss Jones' ass? I just don't understand it.

I'm not asking anyone to speak ill of the dead, but why the concerted effort to praise him so much?

Because they hope he finds another job.

True, but you also have to remember that there's immediate playing time available at Tennessee. And the promise of being coached by Mr. Super Bowl, MNF announcer, QB Camp show on ESPN Jon Gruden would be huge. I think we'd see a lot of blue chip guys with no interest in Tennessee suddenly want in.

Fair point. I could see a lot of excitement. But still, parents keep a lot of these kids grounded and they would still want some time to get to know a coach and make sure it was a good fit, especially any that are already committed elsewhere.
