Recruiting Forum Football Talk XLIII

I want a coach that won't run and hide from Bama.

This hire will be telling. In many ways, I'm with you. But this hire will be extremely telling.

We have the money, the recruiting base, the fans, the facilities, and a half-decent roster (i.e., not a total rebuild).

If we can't attract a top tier coach this cycle, it will be very very telling about what people really think about our job. And I'll be convinced it's the Bama effect.

One has never had his team #1 in the country 👀

That Memphis win is one to hang you’re hat on, though.

Mullen would be a current upgrade no doubt.

But to discount Frost bc of his path and opponents on his schedule is foolish. Those opponents he is in the same conference with and kicking their ass.

Dang, I was in the wrong thread. I made some of the best posts ever made in that other thread. You'll just have to take my word for it.

You a fan of Mike Houston I’m guessing?

19-1 and crushing his opponents. Kicking their ass.

IF his system, especially offense, translates well to the SEC level of competition. Don't know. I am high on the guy, but I would want to dig a bit deeper than his record and scoring against that level of competition.

If I were king of the hill, here's the steps I'd take to get Tennessee football back. It requires sucking up some pride, but I think it would work.

1) End the Alabama cross-divisional rivalry: after years of trying to figure out why we remain down with so much tradition and resources, I've decided this is the #1 reason. This just isn't a rivalry any more, and having to (potentially) beat them twice to win the SEC title is an albatross around our neck.

2) Work with the league office to switch the traditional timing of the Kentucky game (Oct/Nov) with the Florida game (Sept): We would no longer start SEC play with a (near) automatic loss, and this would allow us gain momentum - I personally think we should do this regardless of 1 - it would be better for us and the league to have this game later (allows both teams to win early and gain higher AP rankings).

3) Work with the league office to switch Auburn to the East: follows easily from 1; this would saddle Auburn with the "beat Bama twice" albatross, which would doom them to 10+ years of mediocrity just like us.

4) Pick up a cross-divisional rivalry with Arkansas (let UGA have TAMU and USCe can have Mizzou) - We have been the Arky of the east for 15+ years, and they are a natural rival. This would be an easy sell to the league office at this point in our history, and we could beat Arky regularly going forward.

5) Make a commitment to having the largest pool of cash available for recruiting and for assistant coaching hires in the SEC - I think we already have this one (I'm convinced Currie is doing this).

I think we'd like where we found ourselves in a few years with that approach.

Tennessee would be an incredibly attractive job, and the path to winning the SEC would be much clearer.

If this coaching hire gets sideways and we wind up with Brohm or Bobo, I think more fans would sign onto my plan.

How can it be a crushing problem when we've never even played them once in the SECCG?

How is Arkansas a natural rival? Knoxville's as far from New York City as it is from Fayetteville.

Nick Saban is 66 years old. When he's gone the Bammers are going to go back to being the same squabbling mess they were before he got there. There's no reason to throw the third Saturday in October away when we've got other problems to worry about first.

We have a shot to rewrite the lyrics to “Ice Ice Baby” to “Frost Frost Baby.”

I don’t think you guys see how awesome this would be. This is 67% of my argument

I think Frost is good, but the fact that Oregon didn't go after him after firing Helfrich is kind of weird. I know he made a big deal of publicly stating he would stay at UCF if offered, but there is no indication Oregon ever considered him.

Good lord. You don’t give up TSIO just because Bama is good. For goodness sakes, they didn’t run away when we were kicking their butts for close to a decade.
I want a coach who believes he can beat anyone, and does it. That’s the Tennessee way.

To a question regarding butch and jumbo tron earlier:

That picture will take a little bit to get done and replaced. But as for graphics in and around the complex, campus, stadium etc... i think the university has 48 hours to remove all things Butch Jones.

Thanks. Might’ve been lost in the thread transition, but who made the call to put CBJ up there in the first place?

I choose to remember Butch this way... stalking the game clock, ready to call timeout so the fans could fully appreciate and experience the moment of defeating Florida.

Now, it's time to move on, and hopefully experience greater moments in the near future.

That was a hell of an experience. Glad I was in Neyland that day.
