Yeah, for sure. But my point isn't what makes you ecstatic. It's what the floor should be.

Were we discussing the floor? I thought we were talking about expectations?

We should be what we were in the 90s and early 2000s. Which exceeded our 100 year historical average. We have been in a valley for 10 years which was below our historical average. When we come out of the valley we want to go to another peak, not win 9 games a year then hit another valley.

I'd rather have Mullen over Whittingham as well. I think there's a decent chance Whittingham would outright fail at Tennessee. Don't see his ceiling being higher than Mullen's either, while his floor is much lower.

We would know what we were getting with Mullen, who is also much younger than Whittingham.

I see no upside to Whittingham. He's never been at a place where you have to recruit like you do at Tennessee. He's been at Utah more or less his entire career. Not saying he isn't a good coach- he is- but it seems like he fits a template that would be much riskier than most candidates mentioned here.

Basilio has been absolutely 💯 Gruden will not be coach at UT. He made a statement today saying he is hearing Butch may done tomorrow. Also said from what he heard this morning he will refrain at this moment on commenting on Gruden until he gets further verification.

Considering he has never been a college coach and has not coached AT ALL in over a decade? Fulmer won a NC. Chizik won a NC. Let's hire them?

Let's be honest, nobody believes Chiziks resume is anywhere close to Grudens. Nobody believes he is anywhere near as good of a coach as Gruden. Everyone knows why he won a NC

And Fulmer seriously declined.

So you picked out the worst two examples you could think of.

Percentage wise, what are the odds of a NC winning coach or Super Bowl winning coach, in his prime, failing as a college head coach. Don't pick out one or two of the worst examples you could find, but take them all into consideration. Because if i used your logic I could pick two coaches out of all of them also.

Bill Belichick would fail in college because he never coached college

Mike Tomlin would fail because he never coached college.

So ... you're comparing a guy that was failing in the NFL and had already won a National Championship to a guy that hasn't coached a down in since 08 and never in college.

Not. Even. Close.

To a guy that DIDN'T fail in the NFL but won a super bowl and should have gone to another but for a stupid rule. Not to mention he beat Saban

Matt Campbell is really impressing me now. I think Iowa State will get lucky and hang onto him for another year or two.

He hasn't coached in almost a decade. Saban hasn't taken a hiatus.

The hiring of both coaches is totally different, which is what my response is to. You mentioned that you wished I was Bama's AD ten years ago. It's just a weird and inaccurate comparison.

I’m just so damn ready for Butch to be out of here.

Most are, but some would like to pay more for a version of Butch that gives slightly better press conferences after they lose to the same teams each year. (Aka Mullen)

At least with my Dooley suggestion, we would lose a couple more games each year, but we wouldn’t have the embarrassment of paying a top 5 salary to be mid tier SEC east (aka irrelevant).
