Tennessee getting Gruden, and Florida not getting Frost, Mullen or Taggart and having to settle for Norvell would be the greatest thing to happen to Tennessee football since at least '98, maybe ever.

Norvell feels like a Butch Jones level coach to me. Inherited a good program and has an offense that works in G5 football.

I live in Memphis. I haven't heard any catch phrases. He is recruiting at the highest level in Memphis history, and he is having to outscore opponents because his defense is young on the backend and he has lost 4-5 starters to injury or dismissal.

I don't know what conference it will be in, but I believe that Mike Norvell will be running a successful P5 program one day.

My thing is:

If we are willing to offer over $10 million (allegedly) for a guy to come coach, while giving him total control and giving him a ridiculous budget to hire his staff ... and he's STILL mulling it over, he can kick rocks. That's an automatic acceptance from almost anyone else in the country.

Did we just become best friends?

Someone convince me on Taggart over Mullen. I know he's a good recruiter and had a good season with USF last year. What puts him in the top 3?

Taking over bad situations and improvement every year.

I don't know why there is uncertainty with the guy. Look at the records and look what they were before he showed up.

Big difference between coaching college football and NFL. For a lot of guys there's not a big appeal to coach College football.

Did Hamilton hire Bruce? I know it ended badly but it was fun while it lasted

Yep, sorry. One good thing was good for a while. He hired Bruce Pearl. I hated when they fired Bruce.

But my gosh, that BBB Petition started by the fans looks worse every day now.

It's the package he's being offered. It's flat out egregious, if it's what we've actually been told.

Stop giving a school you supposedly love the runaround and accept or decline. That type of offer doesn't need to be mulled over - it is an absolute no brainer.

I personally couldn't because if I was AD I'd pick Mullen over Taggart. I'd say ones that would take Taggart would mainly mention the recruitment piece

No thinking about it. Vol fans deserve an elite football program. Fact.

Gruden is realistic imo.

Suspending disbelief – This is an idea of what I think some of Jon Gruden’s opening remarks will be at the podium after John Currie introduces him as the new Head Football Coach at Tennessee:

Thank you John for that introduction and thank you all for coming today. I’m extremely excited to be here and privileged to have this opportunity. Becoming the head coach at the University of Tennessee has been a lifelong dream. I know there’s going to be a few people that will scoff at that idea but for me it’s like coming home.

I got my start in coaching football here at Tennessee as a young graduate assistant on the staff of a man who was like a second father to me. I grew up with dad coaching at Notre Dame and when it came time for me to go into the family business. I landed here on Coach Johnny Majors staff. It was my first opportunity. I met my future wife here. She was and is still the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen.

When I first started with Coach Majors, our team was working hard at improving on our 5th place finish in the conference the year before. There was a lot of enthusiasm because we thought we could build on that 1984 year and maybe get a lot closer to the top of the league in ’85. Coach Majors was the best teacher and of course he had won a national championship at Pittsburgh. He had come home to do the same here at his alma mater. He was very demanding. I was probably the one guy he cussed the most but in my defense I was a rookie.

We did win the SEC conference championship in 1985 and went on to win the sugar bowl over No. 2 Miami that year. If you want to know what leaves a lasting impression on a young man give him an opportunity to be on the staff of the team that wins the conference championship his very first year in the business and top it off with a blowout victory over a Miami team that Keith Jackson and Frank Broyles were already crowing national champions before the first kickoff. We were an afterthought. All Miami had to do was take care of business and the title was theirs. Coach Majors had told us that we’d have something to say about that and when we spoke we spoke loud and clear. That was my first year in coaching. We finished ranked No. 4 in the country but in our minds if Miami was playing us for the National Championship and we beat them – well that’s how we felt. We won the game in convincing fashion.

One of my fondest memories of that season and I’ll never forget it, is one day after an incredibly difficult practice where I think Coach Majors had been on my ass more than anyone else on the field, he walked over to me, put his arm around my shoulders, and said, son, you hang in there and one of these days all of this will be yours, the staff, the players, the fans, the stadium, and of course the legion of miserables. All yours. You just gotta keep working and learning and one day you’ll be here wearing my shoes. I looked over at him and told him that would be a dream come true. He patted me on the shoulder and invited me to go have a drink with him.

It’s been a long journey, finding my way back home, but as I stand before you today, I’m reminded of that young man walking off the practice field that evening in 1985 with Coach Majors and how that young man has finally realized the fulfillment of that dream and how eternally grateful I will always be to Coach Majors and all the stern lessons he taught me and the tremendous encouragement he gave over and over again, for the great privilege, and for me as a rookie coach just starting out to have had the opportunity to share in those unforgettable memories with him in that championship year. Coach, would you please stand?

I just don’t understand this line of thinking, no offense. The offer is no doubt incredible to a normal college coach, hell even NFL for some. That doesn’t mean that it’s a no brainer and doesn’t require thought and talking to his family and people around the program. 10 mill? Who cares? If he is confident he doesn’t lose his MNF gig for the next two years then that plus his endorsements he’s already making probably 8-10 a year. This is a big decision for him and his family. Also, and I don’t necessarily believe he has accepted the job yet, but we have no idea what indication he has actually given UT at the present.

From a very reliable source. UF has reached out to representatives of Bob Stoops, Chip Kelly, and Charlie Strong to gauge interest in becoming the #Gators next head coach. These are believed to be UF's top choices.

Had my first dream last night about UT football that didn't involve myself. We hired Bret Bielema.

I'm saying it's still day and night a better situation from a personality/ego management perspective than college coaching and recruiting.

Disagree. Dealing with a superstar that makes more money than you do and knows you can't really discipline him because management won't allow it is much more difficult for a coach.

Stoops is done
Sec has to approve of Kelly and Florida fought the Zaire thing to the death and he's barely played with a now fired coach. it'll be a hassle for them to get him approved and I don't think he wants Florida.
They can have Strong lmao. that'll be terrific for us.

I would laugh for hours straight if they hired Strong. :good!:

Stockpiles his talent like crazy; always leaves the program better than he found it. His teams seem to take off right after he leaves.

Is this because he's simply not around long enough to take advantage of his talent, or is he not able to take it to the next level? I'd like to see him at a school for longer than 3 years to get the answer to this question.
