He is sports entertainment...not journalism. I have nothing against him, he's just perpetually incorrect when he tries to break news.
Agree especially Gruden situation and he actually thinks Butch might be back next season. If I want to listen to sports radio with facts it’s normally Swain because he can only tell us so much.

This is the conclusion I've reached as to why Butch will be allowed to finish the season (assuming the Grumors are true).

Short Answer: Gruden doesn't want Butch to be fired mid season.

As you all know, Gruden is the founder of the FFCA (Fired Football Coaches Association), an organization where fired coaches can continue to utilize their knowledge of the game in a positive way. From what I can gather, the FFCA serves 2 primary purposes:
  1. Provide fired coaches with an opportunity to continue studying the game while they are off the sidelines.
  2. Provide small, local teams (high school, middle school, ect) with an opportunity to learn from some of the greatest football minds in the game.
Needless to say, the FFCA has a great deal of empathy and respect for fired coaches. They recognize the value in the knowledge and experience they've gained over years and years of coaching at the highest level. Gruden himself is a fired coach, so he knows what it's like to be under all the pressure and scrutiny Butch is facing right now.

The worst thing that can happen for a coach's career is to be fired mid season. That sends the message that they were so bad, it made more sense to cut their time short and let an interim take over until a new coach is hired. It says "an interim coach with little or no HC experience is a better option than you". Even if Butch loses these last 3 games, it will still look better on his coaching resume than getting fired mid season... Gruden wants to help Butch minimize the damage to his coaching resume. If "Gruden to the Hill" is truly locked up, then there is no benefit to UT in letting him go early and naming an interim. At this point, Butch *is* the interim. There is no need to create additional coaching drama if they already have the solution in place.

One last note - Think about this from Gruden's perspective. He has branded himself as a friend and a resource to fired coaches everywhere. How will it make him look if the news comes out that he already had a deal in place with UT before Butch was officially fired? It will look like he was working a deal behind Butch's back. That's not a good look for the founder of the FFCA... (just my opinion)

*again, this is all assuming that the Grumors are true and we really do have Gruden locked up.

The darkest hour is always before the dawn.

Having said that, I'm off to make eight dozen cookies for my kids' teachers. I'll be back and hopefully we will be on the upswing.

B obviously makes the most sense to everyone.

That is why the only conceivable explanation is that part of the negotiated deal was Gruden's insistence that Butch be allowed to finish the year. My guess is that when the deal was reached, no one thought the season would deteriorate to this point. They have probably gone back to Gruden and said "I know we agreed, but look at what it is happening." Gruden is looking for ways to speed up the timetable; and if he can, the announcement will soon be made.

That is a valid point. In other words, Butch would be able to maintain until Gruden steps in. No harm in that if a good recruiting class remains intact. I hope you're right.

Meh is in two years in the rearview mirror to anyone saying attention.

Ftr, I don't actively try to be a turd. I probably deserve a few gtfo's from knuck.

The silence is getting to me. When I hear things that seem counter to my logic...Butch actively trying to save job, etc...the old what if kicks in.

Share please. Cookies always make me feel better.

Okay I’ll play along. Currie himself is a change to the administration. He brought Phil back. And of course we want a bowl! These kids need all the practice they can get. The new coach would have some time to get to know the kids. And the moment that’s not possible, he’s gone. I swear, this constant climbing on the ledge every time you hear something negative is getting old.

Currie was not the one to bring Phil back. Phil is a special advisor to the president for community, athletics and university relations. He was in talks about the position before the search for the new AD started.

I don't get the freak out over a man begging for his job. If you think any BIG boosters are swayed by this at all God bless you. If you think Cade is not recomitting after Gruden or any proven big name coach is hired, God bless you. Phew! Ape... get out of the closet, quit pullin on lil elvis and get weird man!

I don't need condescension. So, no. God bless you.

I don't think he is begging. I think that he is is going to those he feels were in his corner, but other than that he is doing nothing to help his image as a coach.
