Official Jon Gruden Thread XXVI

I'm starting to think that Butch walked in on Currie with some intern and threatened to expose him if he gets fired .

As much as that is a concern, the fly in the ointment that hired Currie in the first place is what makes me fear that this will be the same song and dance as 2012.

I didn't want to go there but Yes! We are placing our trust in people who Lost last time, that they will WIN this time..... I would be a lot more conformable if I knew exactly who the players are!

Still completely baffles me how one man has so much power amongst a large group of power-hungry people.

We have had this discussion before but the one consistency that comes out of my conversations with my booster friend is "Big Jim won't get out of the way". I used to think he was probably exaggerating but I'm now confident he's a big problem. After the AD hire and the way it went down, I cemented what he's conveyed to me on multiple occasions.

I haven't seen this mentioned, but does anyone recall a few years back when Jordan Matthews (Vandy) took a hard blow and vomitted on the field of play a few plays later. I don't recall how Franklin snuck out the back door on that one, other than the onset of symptoms and reactions was almost immediate.

Franklin snuck out of a lot of back doors...

That's against the thought that the Currie was brought in as part of the larger plan (some say 5 years in the making) to eventually bring Gruden (or at least a major fish). Looking more like the narrative of Haslams vs the other boosters in a major power struggle. From my uninformed perspective, having Haslam not run the show any longer would be in the best interest of UT. All very interesting. I feel like the class dunce for just now beginning to put things together.

That's why I believe that Davenport squashed the facilities contract that Haslam was pushing out to the state entities. The only other school to decline was ETSU which is currently led by a UTK alum.

That is how I remember.... but keep in mind I have oldtimers

Conflicting accounts of this. Some say he closed the deal while others say he almost botched it. Wasn't that he didn't want Saban, but that he almost screwed up the negotiation.

If Currie is against Gruden then he will get freight trained by a cash cow --- well by a no cash, cash cow.

But I thought I read somewhere in one our many Gruden threads that Currie was all about Gruden (from an "insider")?????

Duckriver is a very intelligent poster and I am very interested in his take on this... but I was of the same opinion as you here.... I am just trying to figure it out

Who wants Gruden as coach?
Who gives enormous amounts of money to the university?
Who cares more about the football program than even the fans?
Who wanted Fulmer as AD?

The legal standard for negligence does not automatically allow Butch to hide behind a lack of actual knowledge. As the head coach, should he have known that something was wrong? And was the team policy designed to shift responsibility onto players to essentially self-diagnose and self-report? While the coaches emphasize an "unspoken" rule of NOT self-reporting?

I think Butch has put the University into a very very dangerous position if the answers are in the affirmative.

This is also where Hurd and others come in. If it was a one time thing, Butch has a pretty good out. If this type of thing happened multiple times, he is in deep ish.

Exactly...

Nothing to see here...
One big happy family.

The last time the boosters had pooled money for the Gruden hire, they let the AD keep it. This time according to the Beav the money is contingent on Gruden as well as future contributions. It will be interesting to see whether they hold true to their threats or give in if they cannot get on the same page as far as Gruden. Atlanta Vols perspective would be interesting.

No Gruden = No renovation

i tend to agree this in theory.
if the booster coalition doesn't get gruden, and they indeed pull their support, where's the money going to come from to do all this renovation? Haslam? $300+ million from one guy? He indeed may have it, but that's asking A LOT.

I think they were both talking about whether they should go to that "business meeting" at Albert Haynesworth's house they were invited to. They were trying to decide if they were "keeping their options open"

Wait, I am lost... what are you referring to ... I hadn't heard about any meeting with Haynesworth

What does frustrate me about this power struggle is that neither side seems to have worked toward any tangible middle ground. I hope we don't end up with nothing by fracturing.

The way some have described it this is more of a complete shift in power and control. With the payoff to the academic side being funding supplied from other sources.

Middle ground may be an option but that will be perceived as a win for the status quo And big fish want control that our University as is won't allow. This is a revolution........................... Or a complete cluster with incompetent actors at every level. I'm holding out hope for the former.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I think the problem is that Butch Jones runs such a s*** show on the sidelines, that a player that can't even find the huddle goes completely overlooked for over half a football game. That is just as dangerous as a him knowing the kid was concussed.

No it’s not! In no reality is unawareness in the same arena as disregard.

Actually all of the UT campuses have opted out, including UT Martin and UTHSC. Don't read too much into this. The legislature has been against it and there have been lots of editorials urging schools to opt out for non sports related reasons.

Well, let’s hope they don’t have a flexible leverage bar...

...unless Gruden just simply says thanks but no thanks.

Early on, it was stated that one of the motivations of firing Fulmer was that Currie convinced Hamilton that we could get Gruden then. Then Hamilton developed a man crush on Kiffin and went the other way.

I can say that someone very close to the program said that Currie is very methodical and thinks every scenario through before pulling the trigger and they they respect him.

There has been so much posted that I missed or don't recall... but I don't remember this
