Official Jon Gruden Thread XXVI

The Comb is one of my favorite posters on VN. Insiders are around, it has been a very interesting past 2 days. The Kendrick’s issue is a big deal (both in the health of that kid and on the implications it has on Butch).

For the game theory nerds, whoever can correctly summarize the implications this has on Currie and the boosters will win a a couple free scotch drinks on me at a home game next year.

It's very simple. It's called forcing a commitment. Like in chess where you force someone to put a piece into play they didn't want to use just yet.

Or in the military world, you expose a weakness which forces an opposing commander to commit his reserves to counter you. Or accept the consequences of inaction.

I'll take a Hoegaarden please. In the proper glass.

To expand the implications of what this means for boosters/Currie...

Currie was content, either by design (likely) or by negligence (unlikely), to continue letting Jones coach through the season. For what reason, who knows. The boosters felt the time was right for a change and decided to force the issue. The Kendrick injury provided the right opportunity for them to push Currie into action, or accept the inevitable consequences of inaction.

Put into military terms, a commander sees a position on the battlefield that could give them an advantage. But it's not the main objective of the fight. Now, instead of sending in troops to occupy said position, they may perform a feint that forces the opposing commander to commit his own troops to defending it. Which leaves the opposing force potentially weak in another area where your main attack is coming from and the objective you wanted in the first place. But forcing the opposing commander to commit their reserves to the position you didn't want, the opposing commander is now weaker overall. He has no reserves to commit to the battle and will have to voluntarily give ground or be defeated.

Put into Currie/booster terms, I take it you are implying the boosters have used this situation to force Currie to defending an area he does not want to and it weakens him in other areas they wanted to begin with. Hence, Currie now has to commit on Jones by firing (if true) which leaves the only option to him what the boosters wanted in the first place.

Thanks for keeping me up, Beaver.

OK I'll bite. I believe the Kendrick situation could actually act as a thorn in the side of the boosters and complicate things on Currie's side. I hear everything the others are posting, but consider this:

Let's say a deal had been reached. All things were more or less squared away. <Enter BK situation> On one hand, Currie now has more pressure to make something happen now, to expedite the process. The boosters push in that direction. "What more proof do you need this guy is a disaster for the university?" Valid points BUT, Currie also has to consider...

If he can fire him with cause, he potentially saves a lot of money. Problem is, it will take time to get all those ducks in a row. To save money on the buyout would be ideal to all parties, except that the boosters want this to happen ASAP. They're applying pressure to get it done, and will use things like the Buccaneers rumors to work that angle.

For Currie, the BK situation is about $$
For the boosters, the BK situation is about PR & image.

So Currie is caught between being patient and solving the issue of money OR firing now and solving the issue of image.

How do folks feel about the way this is playing out in the media? I think UT looks lost, just bungling every move to this point. Why do we seem so indecisive? Why does it appear that boosters run this show and Currie is going to do nothing other than what he is told? That may well be the case, but Currie is not looking very adept right now. He (they) better land a home run. If not Gruden, at least in the ballpark.

At this point I believe there are two options.... Homerun (Gruden), or go home disappointed (everyone else).

I've been reading the Gruden threads since 2012. I don't typically have much of value to contribute, though. Mostly trying to enjoy the ride. This is far more entertaining than the football season this year.

In grad school now at UT, so using this as an opportunity to test understanding of some high-level concepts I don't fully understand yet. I have no idea if it's correct or not, but it sounds good!

Well it sounded good for sure! I don’t know if it meant anything but... great 3 seconds of effort.

Where have YOU been? Great post. I think.

Yall so smart! Well done.

(Resumes drinking and illogical thoughts)

If Curry has been the delay and the boosters have been wanting him to move forward with the announcement that CBJ and UT will be parting ways, I don't think he can continue to delay...

Edit: Currie (dang auto correct)

I find this interesting but have only begun to scratch the surface. Figured I'd give it a shot to test my understanding.

We can assume the two parties settled at an equilibrium state when they agreed to the terms of the Gruden deal/Butch release, which puts the system at a pareto efficient (optimum) state. We know it is a pareto optimum state since any attempt to benefit someone by deviating to some other outcome will necessarily result in a loss in satisfaction to someone else. The equilibrium state is a function of time, which, prior to the Kendrick situation, can be considered a constant.

The introduction of the Kendrick situation forced a change in the time, which forced a change in the equilibrium. With an artificial movement in the equilibrium point, the pareto efficiency was forced into a pareto ineffient state.

The effect of time on the equilibrium means Currie receives less of his perceived advantage of the original deal (in a sense, a loss from his equilibrium state) and the boosters receive more of the perceived advantage of the original deal (in a sense, a gain from their equilibrium state).

whatever the masterplan was before, if things keep devolving, there will be more questioning about the process (in the media, think wilbon on PTI) after the hiring announement, that might even .... possibly ... overshadow the hire itself?!

I hear what you're saying. The way the Browns somehow managed to screw up the McCarron trade was further proof to me that the Haslams know how to sell gas , rubbers and potato chips , but very little else

Timeline for Butch is in flux if you want to fire with cause..no way he gets a job if he has carnal knowlesge. Sexton probably says fire us and pay a renegotiated buyout, possibly all of it. Now Gruden's camp. Pardon my language Preach but with the Kendrick investigation this is a **** show. Currie is feeling the heat, but the program is taking a nationwide hit for hanging onto him giving the leverage to Sexton and boosters. Gamesmanship says pay the buyout, cut loose any other coaches you need to, promote within, hopefully annlunce Gruden ASAP to change the narrative...at least that's what I'd do

I haven't taken the time to dissect the contract terms, but I'm sure the legal jargon is conspicuous enough for us to cut bait without spending a penny more.

If I weren't such an addict, I would actually investigate this. The Grudemine has taken a firm grip and won't turn me loose!

Hope it is the Gruden. We just look so inept at every level in the media. Either we are doing nothing but "evaluating" a crappy coach who doesn't belong here or boosters are running the show (probably true, not a good look though), letting kids play hurt, etc. The whole crew is damaging the brand big time. Of course a stellar hire would change the impression of UT in a hurry.

In my opinion this puts the boosters sqaurely in the driver seat. If Currie was even considering bringing butch back this will be leveraged against him. The boosters can now deploy an information warfare against Currie if he is even considering letting butch have one more year or go a different route of another coach. This would have great impact on his reputation along with UTs brand. On top of the VFL coordinator resigning and Jalen hurds family coming out on twitter today it’s not looking good for UT and how it may appear our administration is and has been running things.

Hate to ask but What did jalen Hurd family say today I don't have twitter
