Official Jon Gruden Thread XXV

I think we can shut down hopes of Gruden now. Have always thought Beav was in it for the laughs, hence why he’s so vaguely “happy”.

My 2nd and only other choice for HC is Kelly but always thought it was a long shot, more so than Gruden.

I’ll wait around to see the fireworks of Butch’s downfall and to see if they miraculously hire Gruden/Kelly or if they choose to remain cellar dwellers in the SEC East. If it’s not Gruden or Kelly then ✌🏼 on all things UT. This administration is totally incompetent and worthless.

I think Matt Campbell would be a home run. And it isn’t just about this year. He was good before he got to Iowa State.

Patterson or Peterson would be grand slams. But I don’t see them being in play.

Mullen, Strong, Frostalso would be upgrades. Venables intrigues me...seems to have a similar path as Smart.

I’m probably forgetting a few others.

<1%.......

If that is what it has come to, the gamesmanship has shifted in a bad way.

I stopped donating to the University in 2001. When I graduated UT was the best value in America according to a few of the rankings. They bagan a downward spiral and thus, I was not going to contribute to that.

After the Jones hire I was not happy, and further validated continuing not to donate. I gave him the chance, he did most everything pretty well and respectable, minus winning.

If this hire is not someone who can immediately impact this football team in a very noticeable way I will not pass judgement, but, I will not make UT Football the most important thing in the fall.

The academic and administrative side, well, continues to be a very questionable investment and will hold off for another year at least.

However, my other alma mater Northwestern will continue to receive my money as it is an investment with perpetual forward return. My degrees from UT mean less than they did when I graduated, but, my M.B.A. from Kellogg will continue to have much value and warranted appreciation on my part in the donations to the school.

I want to give UT my money, badly, but, they continue to show it isn't a wise investment.

My confidence is half of what it was before these 2 posts. I'll continue to hold on to the thought that it's Gruden until it isn't, but, M***ER****** these 2 just hit home.

This is why I suspect Erik had words with Albert. Somehow the feelings of many are "Gruden or Bust" and while I would love to have Gruden there are a ton of coaches out there that can get us back where we need to be. Dooley was a terrible hire. I didn't even go to the Meet and Greet or Presser because I know people that worked with him at LSU and knew what we were getting. I was very positive with Jones till this season and the last half of last season.

Just be careful of thinking only one person can bring us back to glory and anyone else will be an abject failure.

This guy is certifiable. I have tried to say it nicely but I will say it plainly now, no pun intended.

STOP LISTENING TO MIT BEAVER.

I cannot say everything I want to but I am <1% at this point Gruden will be our next coach as badly as I would love to see it happen. There is a straight up troll convention going on in this thread.

I was hoping for Gruden as much as anyone else. But could not understand people following him as the Messiah. I stand by my previous posts about the guy. It was also hilarious that some guy on here was "compiling a list" of those being negative toward "beaver". Kinda like Nixon and his "enemies list". I still hope for Gruden.

5 years ago when we had the last coaching search everyone was all high on Jon Gruden - I knew the name and that he was known as a good NFL coach. I started doing my research - I suggest that if you have to ask the question why Jon Gruden, you do this also. Since I have never played football - I just love the game - I didn’t really know how games/plays were schemed out... I watched him on MNF and learned... he is an amazing teacher and communicator of the game. He will tell you why a play did work and didn’t work. What each player’s job was in order for the play to be successful. Why run that play at that time or why running the play was a mistake. What play would have had a better result. Saying that he hasn’t coached college is not realizing that he has raised 3 boys and probably has learned patience with that age group and how to speak their language and convey his passion for the game. He runs a QB camp that gets rave reviews from its participants. I am saying if he can teach me some of the nuances of the game, just imagine what he could do with young men who have grown up playing the game. Worth every penny!!!

I believe it's because he tweeted out something about flying a plane with a message on the back in front of 100,00+ vols fans to put more pressure on someone.

Which is a direct contradiction to what he was saying before that the Gruden deal was 100% done.

There'd be no need to put pressure on someone if the deal is done, as he was claiming about a week ago.

What is his twitter handle?

This is my opinion on all of this. Boosters approached gruden. Have a deal they set up that HE has agreed to. The admin has not. Not to say they won’t, but have not yet. There is a stirring up of the fan base going on the raise expectations to force the hand of the admin. MIT is part of that. He’s essentially said as much.

The done deal talk is in reference to an agreement, not that he’s on the hook and landed by the school.

The goal here is the get the admin to raise the bar. Shoot for gruden. But if no on gruden, get a winner. Quit playing the cost benefit game and get some wins.

That’s what’s going on.

This.

Lulz. Go look up career winning percentage leaders in the NFL. Most are around that mark.

Of the Top 20 all time, 3 have lower winning percentages than Gruden.

Of coaches that have at least 11 years as a head coach (as many as Gruden) in the NFL (59 total coaches), there are 21 coaches with lower winning percentages. Which puts him at the top...of the bottom third of coaches in NFL win percentage with as much time spent in the league.

Look, I'm not trying to troll, his is certainly the biggest splash name hire we could make, no question about that. I also think recruits would love to play for him. I'm just not sold on it being the best hire, all things considered.

Not a beaver apologist but just clarifying what’s been said. The whole time he’s said the deal is done. He has repeatedly said its done not because grudens been hired and we’re waiting but based on his faith that “the people that put the deal together don’t miss”

If people want to stress out about who said what and keeping up with your e cred rankings and who to call out.. go right ahead. But for most reasonable people we’ll enjoy the ride

If he was that smart with his money he would understand investments, in turn he isn't getting back the investment he put in for those tickets. Must be nice to have money to blownlike that. Power to him.

No. He invested his money in tickets for a football game, and got those tickets in return. Whether he spent 100k or 1k for those tickets, he got what he paid for, football game tickets and a desirable seating location.

Because I want to use the tickets I've already paid for, rather than listening to guys like Catbone pushing to empty Neyland? Ok, whatever.

You're commentary about your tickets costing more than most posters make in a year. It's sad that you didn't even realize how that would come off.

Carter says he’s FOS.

Its not just me. Several have had the feeling but want it to be true so badly they choose to believe which is fine. I just hate to see everyone be so sure it is going to happen that anyone else would not get a chance. That is the epitome of unfair.

I paid more for my tickets than many that post on here make in a year. Paid is past tense. I'll be there supporting my Vols.

I go to all the games for free.

Actually, I get paid to go.

So, please, take your pompous backside somewhere else.

I understand all of that- I really do- and I appreciate the response. I'm just starting to wonder if an equally plausible scenario would be that JG has told us no, and that we're stuck for now bc there are no other coaches avail until the season ends (along the lines of what LWS has said). I still have some hope for JG. I still think the AD radio silence is a little weird. My rollercoaster is just having some trouble getting back to the top if you will.

I agree, I'll have to treat as I did before, wait and see if the new guy earns it, and it's not just about the wins right away. I just hope whomever it is, it works, and sooner than later, but I'll be patient, just with less zest for making sure I see every game. But, I'll still probably do as I have and watch every damn one of them.
