Official Jon Gruden Thread XXV

Unfortunately in today’s environment, more so than previous decades, stud athletes attend the college that will provide the best shot at making the pro ranks and are less concerned about a degree that they can always come back and earn.

If relaxing the academic requirements just a smidge gets the stud that is missing our cutoff by a couple of points, why wouldn’t you want to be on the same level field with other colleges in recruiting said athlete. Those couple of athletes we miss out on could be the difference in a big time bowl or a championship and the additional monetary payouts/funding those events provide.

Why would any new coach want to start recruiting already behind the 8 ball, compared to rival schools, on borderline academic athletes?

Can anyone please post the differences is what the entrance requirements are for each of the SEC schools? I just want to know how we are at a disadvantage.

I’d like to ask again, and it’s admittedly absurd....would Gruden want Butch to remain on staff for a year(a la Luke Fickel at OSU with Meyer)? They are friends. Gruden new to the college game. Butch is a pretty good recruiter. Butch getting paid anyways....again, I know it’s out there....

I understand your logic there...but I for one want Butch as far away as possible from UT football!!

Since everybody else has a theory, here is mine. Again, just trying to put the puzzle together. Could this be plausible?

Everybody and their brother wants Gruden as coach. The big boosters, alums, and lettermen are included in that. All of this big money comes together and targets Gruden. There is one hold up and his name is Haslam. For whatever reason, he is not on board with Gruden. Haslam IS on board with firing Butch and says he will put up the buyout $$$. Now, Currie is in quite the pickle. On one side, he can upset a bunch of big money people. On the other is Haslam, who was chiefly responsible for Currie being the AD here. Which side does he fall on? I think that is where the "put pressure" angle from some came from. Not only put pressure on the Admin and Academic side, but also Haslam. If the other big money walks, then Haslam would have to carry an even bigger financial burden. In my opinion, we are seeing the biggest high stakes game of chicken being played out right now. Who blinks first?

Growing rumors that if Butch gets to a bowl game, he gets one more year??? It’s on every board that is what Currie supposedly told him.

No way, right? I don’t see it.

If Butch is here next year then #emptyNeyland will be a normal thing. UT will lose their azz of Butch is here next year. I did not buy season tickets this and they called me like once a week telling me my seats were empty and even called me all the way up to Thursday of the 1st home game. They couldnt give season tickets away this year I dont think.
Until UT decides it wants to win I will not buy season tickets again. I am not sold on that they are committed to winning any longer. But Trot Butch out there next year and I think they will find out how much its really going to cost them.

Gruden may want this but I don't think Butch's pride will allow him to give up HC and play second fiddle. I think Butch is trying to line up a job at another school. The South Alabama rumor isn't so far fetched

When Butch is fired, the words of Bob Lamonte will tell us all we need to know about Gruden and our chances. No way he dismisses or claims interest before hand. He'll be quite like last time. I think it was less than two weeks after Dooley got the hammer that he made his "fantasy, no interest statement". IMO, I don't think this search will be a repeat of 2012. With the early signing period, there is no excuse to not pull a Texas when Butch is shown the door and march someone to the podium shortly after Butch is shown the door. If this drags out, that's all I need to see from Currie to know he's an idiot.

Gruden has said he is waiting for the right opportunity... doubt he sees the Browns as right.

Maybe. It's all conjecture anyway. I know he respects Peyton and would love him around to make it happen. Maybe Haslams steered Haynesworth on purpose to keep other franchises chilled till they got it done. About as crazy as the rest out there.

If butch stays another year, the excuse for this year will be, youth, attrition, lost our top play makers. Next year his excuse will be recruiting, experience at QB, lost top play makers on defense. It's ground hogs day

Love how RockytopSC’s source said that he thinks that Empty Neyland is a childish way for fan to get attention.

Goes to show you how pretentious these guys are. They expect fans to shell out cash to watch whatever crap product they put on the field on Saturday’s, and if you decide not to you are childish. You’re just supposed to accept mediocrity and an inept AD.

Despite UT not being not being to the SECCG in 10 years and being a bottom dweller for the majority of those 10 years they have had more support from the fans than they deserve.

It’s funny that when people are finally fed up they are deemed childish.

They ran radio ads for season tickets and then for single game tickets in the Nashville market. They're on shaky ground with the fans and they know it. Whether they care is another matter.

Adds up! Especially since Haslam was in London last Sunday with his Browns while apparently a hiccup arose late in the day with Jones/Currie meeting. Hmmmmm

That's what I was thinking. Peyton GM to turn the browns around.

Peyton has a better chance to be in the Colts front office. I heard a local writer in Indianapolis say that the Colts had already offered, and PM said that he wasn't ready yet.

Yeah, I missed that too - I just searched his posts form 10/23 (when he said it was in the hands of Scarabbeans) & don't see anything specific. Closest thing to "thanking" is a reply on 10/27 to DTO (who posted that he'd been told all obstacles cleared). Bubba said: "Yeah, I'm feeling much more relaxed about the doneness of the deal than this past weekend."

That's all I found too. I understood it to mean it hasn't happened yet.

No.

Bump for relevancy.

Hopefully, folks are paying attention to your 3rd bullet item. This a significant point. Some get caught up in the troll vs. insider labels and miss the dynamics associated with a complex negotiation. One side is leveraging all the tools at their disposal. Good job.

The interwebz is a powerful tool, if used wisely.

I have figured everything all out...the last crumb has fallen. This has been planned I would guess since the loss last year to USCjr and Hurd leaving. I'm about 50 pages behind and I'm going to get caught up before I post anymore. I will say this. Anyone who has done MDNP for a LARGE scale long term operation will understand every dynamic involved. For those who think I'm being cryptic, I am. This is WAY above my pay grade. The tactics in play would make Gen. Neyland himself proud. I'm no insider, no troll, and this is all COMPLETELY based off of my problem solving skills and military experience. I can be 100% wrong on EVERYTHING I have said but I doubt it. I will say that I BELIEVE this will happen. If it doesn't the fallout will be as many have said before and the divide will only deepen.

Edit: I see where I was wrong before and were I was right. I will not dox or insinuate who ANYONE is. I will say I stand by my previous posts that this is a major operation to make UT and UT Football elite again. Bravo to those involved. I am 100% behind you.

I think the Empty Neyland thing is a bad idea too, but that's just my opinion. The seniors deserve better.

They are just telling you that the coach is not the only person to go see. The players are the ones that need support. It is deemed selfish by fans when all they look at is the coach. I don't know how that can be debated. There are many moving parts with this situation.

Showing up on Saturday has no bearing on Butch Jones being coach although I understand not spending the time to go.

I agree. The empty Neyland is just a movement to show big money that it's horrible that they think they can take advantage of passionate fans. We've packed Neyland while sucking. Time to pony up boys!

This is certainly True on the UT side, but may be Not true on the new coaches side... example, maybe something (a present contract, ie) would hinder Gruden form being able to publicly accept and announce accepting the position.

The job I retired from was mine for over six months before I could publicly announce it.... A previous contract prevented it...

However I certainly see your point
