Official Jon Gruden Thread XXV

My own opinion, following along the lines of others, is that something changed with Butch on Sunday. Therefore, the AD is putting out a narrative that could potentially float this along and buy some time? SFD???

Something happened. I don't know what.

JAV is as close as you can get. Not saying the others are or aren’t, but would be hard to find one closer. Larry knows guys on the inside as well.

Aye, unfortunately I have to chose to believe them, even if I don't like what they're telling us. They have a better track record than most anybody else (sans maybe Deerpark?)

This thread needs more gifs, drinking, fishing, music, and hobby talk.

Idle hands are the devil's playthings....and when you guys don't get an hourly update to dissect you go full potato.

Enjoy the ride

Swain at the end of his show said he got a tweet, I think he said tweet, from a person either deeply connected to the boosters or a booster himself that this empty neyland thing is going to jeopardize their chances of landing the next great coach at UT. I was thinking the same thing.

I am not sure from past experiences a "movement" will be necessary for this to happen. Went to several home games in 2012 and gave away upper deck seats to friends and customers since they were free or dirt cheap and they ended up sitting in empty seats in lower S, T, E and F. Sad but that is where we are. Movement or not the attendance will be lower and lower as this season progresses.

I can 100% see the point Swain is trying to make. Its not the fan apathy that will be apparent its a fanbase this ravenous that can make a prospective coach nervous. I could make a LOT more money working for a company with a different outlook but I am ok with what I have but with near 100% job security.

lol Larry is indeed a Debbie Downer, but he does also have information that causes him to be that way. He has been told Gruden turned us down twice, and was told again this morning it is dead.

My issue with Larry is he never reports anything positive. Ever. Right or wrong, it's always negative news.

I don't believe it.

Job security is definitely a huge deal for almost every job industry. Supersedes salary in most cases. I could see that driving off potential coaches.

Sunday afternoon/night i finally got it ... that this situation is fluid, ever changing.

what's true right now, at this exact moment, may not be true 5 minutes from now.

that makes it hard to go all in and believe what "insiders" tell us, and it makes it hard when what they told us doesn't pan out. it doesn't mean they were trolling.

this situation has more moving parts than a car.
i believe that, as long as all parts hold together, we'll arrive at the destination we're all hoping for.... Grudenville, TN.

if at any point, something flies apart, then the whole deal does.

the sooner people learn and understand the fluidity of this situation, the better they will cope with the "insiders."

I think the naysayers are of three minds.

The first are those who genuinely have doubts and concerns. They can be identified by their politeness in asking probing questions and their genuine desire to hear all perspectives.

The second are people who can not grasp complicated, dynamic and fluid situations. They are easily confused. Their confusion causes them to be quick to anger when something doesn't go exactly as planned or as predicted; Thus leading to name calling and saying others are FOS. Again, they simply can't grasp multi-dimensional concepts.

The third are people that are iconoclasts by nature and revel in tearing things down. These people have never done anything of note in their lives and seek joy in making others miserable as they do not have the tools to make themselves happy or to be satisfied with the lives they have made.

I'm seriously confused about the vitriol towards the "academic side" of the university. Without strong academics we don't have billionaire boosters coming down the line. It is a circle that must be connected. No one wins by hating the academics.

While I don't understand why it is what it is. The Athletic departments don't usually have issues with the academia side of things. To the contrary, the Academics department for the most part doesn't get on board with Athletics, not all Athletics only certain programs such as football, Rugby, and I would include baseball to some degree in the group. UT Academia has always had a riff or disapproval if you will with any emphasis on sports. I work at a University, to some extent that is the case here. When my mother was in Veterinary School at UT...many years ago, she said it was going on then. Like many things in life, your priorities are usually dependent upon your occupation. It shouldn't be this way, but often times it is.

I have said it before and I will say it again...

I realize that I mean absolutely nothing in the great scheme of things. I am sure there are a bunch of sunshine pumping "Real Fans" that would love to see the likes of me go. That being said if Currie continues to drag this out through what I honestly believe will be a winless rest of the season only to end up marching out yet another Google search guy or god forbid retaining Jones, I am done with Tennessee football.

Tennessee should have seen the writing on the wall ten years ago when our biggest historical rival was investing into their program and building the dominant monster they are today. Instead of doing whatever it took to at least try to remain competitive our program chose to not only go cheap but also seemingly intentionally shoot itself in the foot at every turn. All of this has conditioned the fanbase to accept mediocrity and be ecstatic with simply being bowl eligible each year. I'm sorry but I'm from the generation that making a bowl game every season was a given. Hell, we used to be angry for not making a good enough bowl. Now we hand out contact extensions to coaches if they get us to the Summer's Eve Bowl.

Meanwhile Alabama keeps on dominating.
Meanwhile Georgia seems to have taken the next step.
Meanwhile Tennessee loses to Kentucky and continues to cling to Jones and show him more patience than they did a coach who actually won real championships here.

Mr. Currie, if you truly care about winning and getting Tennessee back to where it needs to be, it's time to do whatever it's going to take to make the hire to get it done.

1. Kindly send Butch Jones on his way.
2. Hire Jon effing Gruden.

Yeah it's a shame you big time connected insiders have to tolerate the miserables...hopefully the smell washes off. Any word on Butch's last day?

Don't be that way. He was treated very poorly yesterday. And if you take a look at his response to my earlier question you can see his stance on it. And if you are still confused, check out preacherwebb's lightbulb moment he shared with us earlier.

lol well to be fair, it IS mostly negative news with this University. Particularly when it comes to coaching searches. Same with Bob Mueller and his stats. He brings bad news, but he is mostly right.

On the plus side, he did say we will continue to pursue Gruden. Maybe we can talk him into it. Or maybe whoever is feeding him info is leaving some leeway in case there's more to the discussions than what they want Larry to know.

I understand your sentiment, but when has he been wrong? From the first go round what I remember most was him stating that he doesn't see JG being the coach...and he was correct.

We'll see. I would love to see it as well...if nothing for the immediate bump in exposure.

However, I remain skeptical. Not at 0% but under 25%.

Honestly?

I've been firm on this not happening, for several reasons.

I've put many pieces of info together, including personal info I've gathered.

Long story short. As of today, I absolutely believe there is a "deal" and Gruden is on board.

I also believe it can get blown up with a flip of a switch.

This is a chicken/egg argument. Neyland is empty when the product is poor. Both then lead to insecurity. Neyland was full up through the Georgia game. Mostly full during USCe. The product is controlled by the coach, so if Neyland is empty because of a poor product, he should be insecure.
