Official Jon Gruden Thread XXV

Tennessee has accepted mediocrity for 10 years. Currie is continuing to make us look bad by not saying anything at all, while Florida gets **** done fast and effective. How long must we be the laughing stock?

Good seeing you in here, Cat. You starting believe Gruden may just happen this time?

AV's silence is important. I agree.

This hire will be a giant thing for all of CFB. Think about how much Saban to Bama has changed the landscape. Harbaugh to Michigan hasn't had quite the same impact, but similar. We will be the 3rd team to stand up and say "we are here to play big boy football."

There are only 2 things you can think about Currie.

1. He is a complete idiot won cares nothing about his career or the university.

2. He is a benevolent evil genius.

There is no in between.

AV's silence may mean something or could be he's just busy..

Your take on Currie, I totally agree with and hope it's #2...

Nashville ABC affiliate just ran a piece on the morning news that was done by the Knoxville affiliate station in which they claim UTAD will save about $200k for each additional game that they keep Butch. Don't know if it means anything but I'm guessing that this information is being reported to try and explain why Butch is still here.

Typically I would agree about AV, but he's been pretty good about chiming in when asked to over the last couple of weeks. Sometimes delayed several hours, but usually speaks up.

Good morning! I went to bed at 11 last night, but a lot happened in here over night. I have many thoughts on this.

-I think the #emptyneyland thing is ridiculous. Anyone paying attention can see that Butch has been fired. I feel for the boys. I get, however, that folks think it is their best way to protest. It frustrates me for the small business owners that end up impacted the most.

-I don't understand why people are mad that the AA wants to be the "Harvard of the South although I've never heard it described that way. Strong athletics and strong academics are symbiotic. Look at Michigan. No one should care more or less about either of these sides. TN is a UNIVERSITY first and foremost.

-our new bff HearforGrumors helped drive home to me yesterday the immense scope of this. No way did these negotiations start last week or even last month. An incredible amount of leg work has gone into this on every side of this equation. To me, bubba and MIT are the obvious talismans of that. There are people so heavily invested in this that they have sent/paid people to share information to influence the court of public opinion. This isn't a matter of Currie calling Gruden and saying, "hey, you wanna coach here?" This deal won't be denied because of the investment that has already been made.

- side note... funny to me how when we call people newbies they don't understand that we are talking about this thread and not this forum.

I agree with everything about the scope of this...too much information from too many sides of things. Not saying it’s 100%, and I won’t until CJG is at the podium in an orange tie. But there’s a lot going on behind the scenes, and there has been for a while.

Due to his previous %100 comment it may be best he remains silent.... :)

I am still all in for Gruden, but with all I have seen with the UTAD and the opportunities they have had to get rid of CBJ. I now think Jones will coach out the season. He will be fired after the Vandy game, then we will move on to Gruden. It will be hard on the early signing day for Recruits. TAD have stuck the middle finger to the Senior class saying long term is more important to them than this season. I hate it for the kids. Meanwhile Jones will keep irritating my ulcer for a few more weeks. I really hope this isnt what happens but all signs are showing it will. with that said I say ......

SOON!!!!

Don't know if it's been mentioned but I thought it was interesting ... The timing that seems to line up with Butch's "final game" slip referring to the Soithern Miss game and the BOT meetings Thursday and Friday. Anybody have any thoughts? Seems to lend to a timeline.

One has to think that the BoT meetings are important in all of this. If there is a potential deal on the table that needs final blessing, that is where it will take place. At a minimum, you have to think that Butch will be discussed at length.

It will be interesting to see if Peyton is at the game on Saturday. It would be a potential sign that he contributed to that meeting in some way.

Maybe next week is when things will happen.

There may be a third option, Currie is caught in the middle of the power struggle between the Academic side and the Athletic side throw into that mix the conflicts and egos of the big donors, some who always want credit, and you have a complicated puzzle. The more I see the more I believe Beaver, and Buba adds to this. I think when all is said and done, PM will once again be the hero of the University on all sides!

I was just sitting here thinking. This is probably going to be the most important thing to happen at this university in our life time. If they get this right we'll go from worst to first literally overnight. I don't want to imagine if it doesn't get done. It's amazing to be a small part of it and to see it unfold. I've been glued to my screen every waking moment these last few weeks. At least it keeps me off the streets. I appreciate everyone giving their info so guys like me can have something to look forward to on Saturdays.

Hyams on the Morning Drive is saying that Coach Fulmer is heavily involved in the coaching search and that he is strongly opposed to firing Butch mid season.

According to Beaver that is not significant.

But if there is a deal that could happen, what is the harm in saving a few hundred thousand dollars?

Also, if the team becomes statistically ineligible for a bowl, that will save that much more.

Here's something that occurred to me, please read and think and reply.

We assume: Butch wanted out last year and courted any alternative employment somewhere else with another school

We know he didn't get the jobs he sought, we know he got a new agent, we know he asked for an extension.

What if, at that time before the season started Currie and Jones reached a tentative agreement (including many different scenario's concerning wins and money to be paid out) for this being his last year? New AD, comes in with his own list, he saw the writing on the wall from last season performance and then that Jones wants to get out, he says no problem I'll oblige.

As someone else stated, the problem with everything we are seeing is no one expected this season to be as bad as it is, so early, screwing up timelines and alternative options for moving forward with a new coach.

So, quietly Currie began his due diligence and began to go ahead with his own plan for a new coach. Cue the crappy season, and the Georgia game. Enter the money and the Gruden.

Currie allows the money to see what can be done, while Currie works with Sexton on the earlier agreed upon mutual separation. Currie gets the news that Gruden can be got, and he works with Sexton to finalize the buyout that seemingly was done weeks ago and agreed to in principle.

Currie sees the writing on the wall and is on board, now he needs to get the other side of the University to agree. Cue Manning and Fulmer, and the ongoing supposed pissing match that exists within the university.

Then we hear of the BATNA, and Currie is no less hated by the university academic side and can say he was already planning and had set in motion the dismissal of Jones, but, he feels this newer option is a better decision and he along with the boosters can force the hand of the academics with Currie getting their agreement begrudgingly as he said, he had already come to this conclusion on his own before the season started.

Did they ask Fulmer why he thinks it’s better to let Butch coach through the season while Fulmer actively recruits his replacement?

Screw Hyams and screw CPF.
of course, Phil will say this. All coaches would.
He’s wrong.
Butch deserved to be fired long ago.

I don't think money is the issue. I am just on a limb here, hoping that Phulmer, Butch, Gruden, Currie, etc are coming together and saying, lets finish the season, give Gruden time to line his ducks in a row, with his sons football, corona, MNF, Hooters, moving, what ever, and that Butch truly cares about the players and wants to give it all hes got until the day comes. They are high hopes, but we will see.

I agree with you and SFD- there is no way this kind of potential deal was just cobbled together in a month or so. It does appear like it has been in motion for quite some time. I hope everything will get completed at the meetings. Does Bill Haslam's role with the BOT help us? Hence the Haslam support which I don't know was ever truly confirmed..
