Official Jon Gruden Thread XXIV

When I started at UT in engineering the brand new engineering building had just been completed, but there was no money for the necessary equipment. The athletic department spent 10's of millions of dollars to buy ME that equipment to increase the value of my degree.

This is the way this used to be done. Not a new philosophy, just one we need to return to.

Female. Likes football. Feeds her man copious amounts of wings. Pushes logic. And :gasp: is an engineer...

Unicorn.

At this point Butch and Currie can find Sympathy between sh*t and Syphilis in the dictionary!

Classic!

DTO has steadfastly said that Butch was told that he wasn't going to be back in 18 right after the GA game. Everyone's favorite and most trusted insider (and I like and respect him too) LWSVOL confirmed this morning that what DTO posted was true. So TIFWIW.

I like this and agree with it. Where I'm stuck is why keep him around now? I don't buy the kids to class theory. I just can't figure out any advantage whatsoever to keeping him while the fans reach their boiling point.

Recruiting taking a hit. Revenue takimg a hit. Homecoming this weekend and it's a toxic environment. Why would Currie want this?

Muschamp and Mcelwain are “Lamborghini’s”? Those kits you can buy mail order to slap over an Oldsmobile chassis? :)

Let me speak more slowly.
They were hot commodities at the time of their hiring.
No, they did not pan out in the end.
That is not the point.
The point is they were top choices and they landed them.

JAV seems to have all but given up on Gruden as of late....

Actually, that was better than what he was saying before, that Gruden was a no-go. At least he didn't eliminate the slightest possibility

I know, I know...

So You're Saying There's a Chance.gif or w/e

I understand what you are saying, but it is a major university, the flagship of the state. Booster funding not withstanding, a university can exist without athletics, but the athletics cannot exist without the academic part.

I don't think this is about academics expecting handouts. The academics are the ones that eventually become billionaires that continue the circle of funding. The athletics simply cannot exist without the academics.

I am sorry but you are wrong in your understanding of how it works. TN athletics is 100% self sufficient, they take $0 from the academic side of the university. In fact, they pay for the debt maintenance, and upkeep on Neyland parking garage, and obviously all sports facilities. That parking garage is used daily by commuters and the academic side charges parking fees that clearly they get to use on something other than the cost of their parking. The academic side uses the sports facilities for things like fundraisers, graduations, etc at no charge to the university.

The sports programs bring in large donations and attention to the academic side of the university. The university can, and obviously wants, to exist without athletics (though they will have to begin paying for things they currently do not pay for) but they are much better off with successful athletics than without. The athletics programs at TN need ZERO assistance from the academic side to exist.

Too much empty analysis based upon what WE want and when WE want it.

Everybody needs to relax. If Currie wasn't busy fixing this, don't you think we'd have heard a bite of confidence from him sometime since the Florida game? Georgia game?

Butch is gone, has been since Georgia....when is a matter of what is best for the deal being made.

I fail to see how the two entities, one being Butch's departure date and the other being Grudens deal have anything to do with each other. Maybe for a few weeks to give Gruden cover to work out separate business interests, but come on. It's getting ridiculous.

MIT I'm buying what you're selling. However, has a deadline been put in place to get the other side to blink? I'm curious if Gruden is a patient man.

Academic Side:

Email, call, tweet, do as you wish. As a state institution or as a business, these people should know how you as a consumer/fan feel. I would suggest being firm but professional in your correspondence. “Farruh Butch and harrauh Gruden” isn’t exactly going to cut it. The most effective way to get someone’s attention is through their pocket. Let them know without viable change you can no longer support their choices financially.
Find someone with the proper words to express and I'll sign that mass email in a New York instance !

Again, I am not talking about money. You cannot have COLLEGE sports without a COLLEGE.

In my opinion, no matter what deal is being structured, letting Butch stay in charge to the degradation of the team and recruiting efforts, is a failure on his part.

Who is the problem exactly? I asked this before is Haslam on board with Gruden? That has to be important here with his influence and also that his son happens to be governor.

Hell Currie/AD...at this point, just give us a "Hang in there Volnation" tweet.
Anything at all would suffice.

Just let us know you aren't deaf to the outrage...

Whoever your PR person is, they have to be flipping out because this is a nightmare.

JAV seems to have all but given up on Gruden as of late....

“Everyone has an opinion about the timing of letting CBJ go. That has been going on since the UF game. It isn't as if he lost support last night, that has been the case from a majority of people that matter for a long time, some as far back as '15. I see both sides of the argument for keeping him until the end of the season and gong ahead and ending it now. If it were me, I'm sending him on now. I tend to like to move on quickly if things are obviously not working. There is some thought that Butch is still the best bet to get them to a bowl game and therefore have a better shot at a good job that will mitigate his buyout. That's a risk reward situation that you have to look at and see its merit. There isn't anyone on staff right now that could interim outside of RG. There are serious issues between coaches and that would just explode if anyone else were to take that role. That ties Currie's hands with an interim role to a high degree. I'm of the opinion that Coach Fulmer could come in and help stabilize that situation with the agreement that he's only interim, don't think he would want to be a full time coach again anyway.

Everyone has kind of lined up and said if you can get Gruden you try. I still am very doubtful that will happen but you have to try and that is ongoing. That said, there's been research and some limited vetting through 3rd party contact with other candidates, some of them you've heard, some you haven't. It's very likely that there won't be a hire until December and this class will have to be what it is. Money isn't going to be an obstacle for anyone with merit. There are a bunch of good options out there and it will be interesting who shows interest among those who haven't been mentioned for whatever reason. I think that there will be significant interest.”

If they hire a mid major then all the administration can go to Hell
