Official Jon Gruden Thread XXIV

I don't understand why Gruden is the big fish everyone wants. What makes anyone think he would be a homerun hire??? What would his recruiting be like??? Is he an offense guy or a defensive guy??? How highly would he be thought of by recruits??? I think personally he would be a huge risk just like an up and coming coach. I may be wrong. But I would much rather have someone that has been a college coach.

The decision has been made. He is out. The question is timing. You idiots calling for Currie's head ought to wait and see where we are in six weeks before making a Judgment.
I know this is the instant gratification generation, but sometimes one must let the process actually play out, and in the end achieve a better result.
Rest assured, Butch will not be the HC in four weeks.
And the process of finding and securing the next coach will not be slowed by not firing him tomorrow.

Making affirmative statements, name calling, generalizations. This one has it all.

My two cents...everybody needs to chill out and be patient. If Currie or Haslam or whomever goofs this thing up...or if there was nothing to goof up in the first place, trust me, there will be plenty of time for teeth gnashing. There are many factors at play, most of which we aren’t privy to. We live in a social media world where we want our info immediately, myself included. But whether Butch is fired today or after the season has no bearing on the outcome, as long as you are certain of the outcome. We either have our man or we don’t but nothing going on right now changes that.

If this is true then the powers that be should just rip out all of the unneeded seats and sell them for scrap metal to compensate for the lost ticket sales.

Sadly, I could see our AD thinking this would be a good idea.

Like pissing in the wind with this bunch.

The future is more important than today.

Said this many times.

His base is less.

Fair enough. I will be clear though:

1. I still think Butch will not coach next Saturday,
2. I think the AD started that ball rolling last night,
3. I think Gruden will be our next coach.

The evidence that causes me to believe these things hasn't changed or been called into question. I was simply speculating about a possible new variable. Thought I was clear about that.

Why was he on my television today? Why do I keep hearing he still has a chance to keep his job?

Competent AD's do not do what Currie is currently doing.

If he wasn't going to be the coach, he would already be gone.

So, one of my own small informational contributions to this conversation was input from the academic admin side (AA) that they had agreed on a number of concessions (from their perspective) to the football program. That was a major article, and it appeared to be cleared out of the way of the hire.

Within the last 24 hours we have seen some very specific rumors about Gruden's staff. Specifically, this morning we have a suggestion that he may have tapped Art Briles as OC.

I can think of nothing, literally nothing, that would be more likely to make the players in the AA lose their collective ish than allowing Art Briles to set foot on campus in an official capacity. It would be the kind of move that could easily throw a huge wrench into negotiations.

I'm not sure if the Briles rumor is true. I am interested that it has come out right at the time we expected to hear an announcement about Butch, but we haven't.

I've tried contacting my AA person, no response yet this morning. Not entirely unexpected with church going on. Will try again to find something out later.

IF the Briles rumor is true, then it's absolutely going to be a showdown between the $ and the AA. We will see who wins. I can tell you this though: if Gruden comes and Briles ends up being on staff, it will represent a huge power shift between football and academics, akin to the Romans burning Carthage and sowing the fields with salt.

Grude on!

Not Art Briles. Kendal
Briles.

This (IF TRUE) could very well be the reason that Butch was not fired right after the Kentucky game.... and could be the snag with Gruden :hi:

No power shift. Football for years paid the university in the neighborhood of $85 mill annually to support the academic side. Until last year that had pretty much run out because of lack of support to the team. I said last week I thought Gruden as coach and Briles as OC would be the main new staff and got flamed for it. Still think this happens but I did hear last night there is a new OC player for Gruden and it's JBC.

Can't wait to see how this plays out.

And this where we find out your full of it. Thanks for playing, but it looks like you and DocVol have made the F.o.S. List. Thanks for playing, now kindly drag your carcass out of here.

Maybe I'm missing something but what is Tennessee or Johnny Currie for that matter gaining by keeping butch longer if the deal with gruden is already done? A fu**ed recruiting class is what I'm getting at, ami right?

My theory, you put this out there to show everyone money is no object and we are serious about football. Gruden is not a serious candidate and we get a winner. I.e. chip Kelly, Frost, norvelle, etc.

Soon...just not with the Grude.

You and me both on 1 & 2.
3 still in the air for me.
