The Cuonzo petition is not close to the same thing.

Fans supported Cuonzo and put 15k plus in the stands consistently for him for 2.5 years. The petition wasn't toxic. Fans had finally given up on him and were already moving on to the next coach. The petition lit a fire under that team and they FINALLY played like they were capable. The equivalent would be if we started a "hire Gruden" petition tomorrow and the team finished 8-4 and CBJ found another job next season.

Cuonzo Martin did not deal with what CBJ has dealt with in the media. Not even close. Big reason is that it isn't as big time of a job as football. Lots of it from CBJ own doing but much of it unnecessary and a big chunk of the media in this town is a detriment to this program along with the lunatic fringe mob known as Vol Twitter who live to make fun of their own program.

The petition wasn't toxic?? The optics on that were way worse than "Vol Twitter." Hell, nationally the UT fan base was essentially called a bunch of racist inbreds for that one. Coaches and players were asked about it, tweeted about it, etc.

I'm not talking about how the situation resolved. The argument was made that the fan base and media could tank the next coach, and that's laughable. The situation was analogous. Your second paragraph could describe the Butch Jones era almost verbatim.

Amen. Thought about saying all this, but yeah: (1) it was basketball, (2) it was a short period of toxicity, if you want to call it that, and (3) importantly, it was only a minority of fans doing the petition -- the media was firmly on Cuonzo's side (as opposed to beat writers and ESPNers openly mocking CBJ).

I made a post a while back saying that this fanbase would be screaming "Gruden or burn it all down!" by the end of November.

It isn't going to take that long. Gruden is all anyone I speak with wants to discuss now.

Fan base and media can/go hurt the program at times. Fact.

Tank the coach? Maybe a bit strong.

As for the situation around Cuonzo Martin.... are you using this as an argument to say that the fanbase can hurt a program? If so, you're doing a good job. Take a gander at our basketball program since that petition.

I think they definitely can tank the coach. It's just that they won't do it if the coach is winning big, so as it turns out, there's always the plausible deniability of, "We didn't tank him; he tanked himself" (which has a kernel of truth to it, but is just one more way of piling on).

That's not a kernel of truth, that's the entire cob.

Not sure if he's talking about Football or not, but it was just tweeted and seems like it would fit in perfect with this convo.

No, I'm using it as an example of toxicity not manifesting into a lack of success on the field. Drylo said that Butch wasn't given an opportunity to have success this year due to the toxicity. If you want to get into the long range consequences, that is a different discussion.

I think Martin was a mediocre coach who did not set up his program for success, and then the Tyndall fiasco sent it back to the Stone Age (I actually think Tyndall would have been an excellent hire but for the NCAA thing). From what I can tell, I'm much more optimistic than you about the direction of the program under Barnes. We will see how this year goes, though.

You know what’s sad? This kid is making unbelievable contact. Proper mechanics and he could be a good kicker. Contact is the most challenging aspect of kicking. Zero follow through and he nailed that kick on contact alone.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that looked like an old school toe kick vs the newer soccer style kick.

I'm thinking it started in 2015 with Hurd and a few others. Started taking off practices, skipping workouts, being late to team meetings, threatening to quit when things didn't go their way. Then it really snowballed in 2016... and now we're at where we're at.

How do you handle that though, you dont pay and players start to talk, you give in and you lose the team, I'd like to know how other coaches handle that situation

I'm talking long term. Cumulative effect of toxicity from fanbase and "gotcha" media.

Agree with your second paragraph. I'm not down on Barnes and what he has done here although I don't think he appreciates this job nor do I think he sees it for what it could be.

I used to be against hiring Gruden based on my feelings about him from my Tampa Bay days, but I changed my feelings because I believe he is the one hire that could almost completely unify and energize our fractured fanbase, nobody else available could. We need that as a group.

Anyone that wins will unify the fan base. Philly fans hated Doug Pederson now they are the best team in the nfl.

The beaver returned to the Gruden thread to reach out to Atlanta Vol. Also dropped this:

Also I will not be posting anything interesting on Twitter. Any information I choose to share will exclusively be done on Volnation. And yes I will be coming back to here to celebrate once the dust settles. Atlanta please let me know what your created Twitter handle is for me to accept the follow request.

Wasn't strong fired mid November? And beamer was publicly done prior to December as well.

Strong was fired on November 26, the same day that Herman was announced. PC was on November 27.

Beamer was announced early that he was retiring, but Fuente coaches several games after that. He was announced as coach the next day after his last regular season game at Memphis.

I don’t want my owner or AD making choices by listening to fans of bc the fans want it. It gets you in trouble more often than not. Everyone loved Serrano and he was awful.

I'm so disappointed in John Kelly.

A glass pipe? I figured he'd having something cool like a Wizard or Alien skull bong, no some cheapo Gatlinburg glass pipe.
