Recruiting Discussion

Bruin would be the same guy who if we weren't pushing hard for 5 guys and all 5 said they didn't like how Barnes was recruiting spots he didn't have would be bashing Barnes for it...comical.

There has been no bashing here. It just sucks sitting here a few weeks before NSD and we don't have anybody.

I am slightly encouraged with the direction of the program but would like to see recruiting take off and it simply hasn't yet.

At least he's targeting and pursuing more highly ranked guys, isn't that what many of you were asking for? Simmons and Montgomery had been committed to other schools, basketball isn't football, when a player commits other schools stop calling. Those players decommitted around the same time Petrusev chooses Gonzaga and Tennessee re-engages their recruitment of both players, I truly don't see the issue?

I would have a much bigger issue if we had missed on Petrusev and then you see Tennessee bringing in a guy who's an unranked 3* with a MM offer list and pushing for his commitment in time for NSD.

It boils down to this for me. Is he being extremely choosey? Or is he recruiting like it was done years ago where you didn't offer more guys than you had spots?

I just think he might be better off being more aggressive like other programs are now. Last year at this time we got Kent and I don't think there is any reason to be excited about him going forward.

There was more than 1 offer out in the '17 class, not sure what you mean? Also, they're pursuing Montgomery and Simmons, that's 2 guys yet just 1 open spot, so again not sure what you mean?

As for Kent, I remember many saying the same about Williams, I'm willing to wait and see with him before I makes definitive statement like that.

If they are really pushing and trying to bring them both in for OVs that is a great sign.

Fair point but seeing some video and the RTL I can't see Kent ever being a winning player. Maybe he develops but I don't see it.

If either of those players called the staff and said I'd like to come in for an OV they wouldn't be told no.

RTL is a pretty weak resume to determine the quality of a player, many good players have looked average and many average players have looked like stars.

Hopefully we aren't waiting for recruits to ask us to visit but are asking them.

Agreed on RTL in a general sense but you can see the athleticism of a player and Kent doesn't have it imo

No surprise you missed the point.

At 7' you don't have to be uber athletic, I see the poor mans Luke Kornet comparison the staff has made. I think being able to get a redshirt year will be big for Kent, I think he'll be a solid player for us.

And fwiw Kornet was an unranked 2 or 3 star depending on the service you choose to use...so Kent actually was more highly regarded coming out of HS.

Difficult for recruiting to take off wheb you only have one available scholarship. Your idea to simply recruit without regard for your scholarship situation is reckless and ignorant. No coach is recruiting that way except maybe Cal and Coach K because they literally have no idea what they will have from year to year, but they know they'll replace half their team.

Ignorant?

Really?

I am not saying they should try to bring in 5-7 kids for OVs and then see what happens.
I just wish they would do that with 2-3 guys considering where the numbers are.

They had 3 OV's scheduled: Filip Petrusev, Emmanuel Dowouna and Amanze Ngumezi...Dowouna and Ngumezi committed elsewhere before making it to campus.

And I hope he turns out to be Kornet-esque. And I am not going to judge him before he is given ample opportunity to develop. But watching that defensive clip from practice a couple weeks ago...and it wasn't encouraging. Let's just say if the coaching staff develops him into a player anywhere close to Kornet they will get serious props from me. I am rooting for him just like every other player we sign.

He hasn't even played an actual game yet, and you've came to this. UT hasn't had much luck in converting them, but Kent has the frame and ability to step out, and surprise folks. I'm in the TGO camp that think there's a chance he may not redshirt this year.

He has size and obvious talent. May be a bit of a project and need to get stronger and add bulk but after all the complaints of TN. Needing height I cant see a downside.

Barnes has said in the past, we don't have a player we can lob it to in the middle.
kent is that future answer. When mentioned by the staff they use 2 words, future and strength.
According to them he has a good BB IQ and a good skill set.
Every team needs role players. Not going to be a starter in the NBA, but he could play a role for this team when called upon.
Bulk up, get strong and take it to the hole young man. Redshirt season would be ideal.

You can't teach perimeter skills overnight to a 7 footer, you look at Alexander and he still doesn't have them...in that short practice clip you saw a more refined perimeter game from Kent in 10 seconds than we've seen from Alexander in 3 years.

Exactly.
Also, when he was in HS he was automatic under the bucket. If he can develop the strength to muscle guys in D1,I coud see him doing well in the paint. If anyone can develop a big guy to over achieve it's Barnes and company.
words i liked from Schwartz. "Player development is our foundation."
Encouraged about the future.

Kent as a freshman is already more physically ready than Alexander as a junior...give him the redshirt year that Alexander unfortunately never got and you'll have a guy we're happy to have come next season imo.
