I've never really understood the search firm thing. If younwantnthem to vet candidates and mine interest that's fine. Give them a list and send them on their way, but have them go get you coaches is stupid imo. If you're a decent AD, you know who you want, have a realistic idea who would take it, and go get them.

I think in most cases like this, the main function of the search firm is to look for skeletons in the closet.

UT owes CBJ $2.5 million for each full year remaining on his contract. His current contract runs through 2/28/21 so three full years remain, plus the pro-rated portion of this year. We owe him the balance of this year, whether he's on the sideline or at home. The buyout package will be less if he coaches the entire regular season, because he will have pocketed some of this year's monies due in monthly salary. But the bottom line is the same.

He earns a bonus for making a bowl. IIRC, it's $100K for a lower tier bowl. The bonus would be higher if we made a higher tier bowl or played in the SECCG, but that isn't happening. He's also owed small bonuses for other things, like APR.

He has a contractual responsibility to mitigate damages by making reasonable efforts to find a comparable/suitable job. If his marketability plummets because of this year's performance and he can't find suitable employment, we could be paying the full buyout in monthly installments until he's able to mitigate.

I just want football people to pick the next guy, not a suit in an office. Let Manning make the list, and get the closest guy to the top that you can.

Never mind. I think I should stick to the fan board.

This is what I've got:

The original contract language was $2m for every year remaining on his contract with proration for any partial contract year. In 2015 when he got a raise the buyout amount went to $2.5m per contract year and I assume the proration language was retained. His buyout essentially drops by $208,333.33 every month. That's how I read the contract and the report from the TFP on the change in buyout amount.

The contract runs through Feb 28, 2021 as per the 2-yr extension agreed to in 2014.

This is correct - assuming I understand how Hubbs was describing it on the radio.

He also has a mitigation clause so UT will only have to pay the difference in his monthly salary until 2021. So it will likely end up being around $100k a month. I don't want to act like that's a throwaway amount but it's not crippling by any stretch.

What's your problem with Matt Campbell? He's a pretty good coach.

Short snarky answer: "pretty good" won't cut it this time.

Longer, more reasoned, answer: I think he's a decent coach, but would like to see him have more success in the Big12 before we took a chance on him. He would be alright, but the fact that we're talking about him as a leading candidate at this point in the search is troubling.

Edit: for the record, it wouldn't shock me if he ended up being the hire.

I don’t even care about skeletons anymore. Give me Kelly with Petrino and Hugh Freeze as Assistant HCs.

Want to win

This is a joke (kinda)

Win!

My interpretation.

Gruden, Patterson, Fuente, Kelly, and Stoops are out due to non-interest.

We should want an offensive guy because they do better overall.

Hart got Haslam to back him with Butch but it was at the risk of his career, and he gone.

Currie is playing politics to make this hire a group decision but our unanimous choice (Gruden) turned us down.

C’mon end this with as much dignity that is possible. Thank him for his service . I think he will understand the crunch due to the early signing period.

Makes sense. Thanks.

Vegas Insider says UT attorneys have been negotiating the buyout and the end may be by lunch Monday

TIFWIW

I think the ball is in CBJ's court. If he's had enough and wants to deal, it's in UT's best interests to deal. If UT wants to fire him, there would be no need for negotiation. UT would terminate without cause and buy out his contract.

It is a straight up, stone cold slap in the face Rashaun Golden salute from our Admin and from Butch. Neither seems to give a good flying flip what we want.

Our next coach's contract needs to have an early termination option if the offense fails to score a TD for 3 straight games.

Bama loses two starters at LB in their first game. Don't miss a beat. That is our problem with attrition and lack of development which is on butch. No depth at critical spots.

That's a completely unfair comparison and you know it. Bama has more depth than any team in the country at every position. U saw what their 2s and 3s did to us yesterday... I want Butch gone to but don't let it make you stupid.

Hutch7 is posting on TOS this morning. Basically says:

Gruden to the Vols doesn't look good right now.

Poster: why?

Haslems are heavily involved.

Poster: I thought Haslems wanted him?

Hutch: they do if you get what I mean

Implying Gruden to the Browns

If the Browns are their priority, they should be removed from the BOT forthwith. Mind bogglingly ridiculous

Btw, sorry for clogging up the board with rants today. I've cherished UT football since I was 5 years old. It's killing me to watch it die like this.

I hate that Butch is still employed but I'm not going to get too worked up about it unless he's retained for another year or we trot a turd of a hire up onto that podium.

He's done one way or another and we have a shiny new coach to look forward to. It sucks that the season is essentially over but it is what it is.

It’s hard to watch especially with Bama at an all time high. Also sucks that Jimmy Frank has a team that was near the death penalty just a couple years ago heading full steam ahead to the playoffs.

Why wouldn't it be? They don't make any money off UT's success.

First, because NFL franchises are ridiculously over - valued, they can't help but make money. Second, if they sabotaged our opportunity to hire an elite coach, that demonstrates that they are in opposition for our future good fortune. I'm sure that the amount that they donate is very high, but they seem to be in opposition to the revenue a successful football program generates. Thus, kick 'em.

So many posters think butch may salvage his job and be back ?

There was a poster on here the other day that said they have cut off recruiting visits with prospects to save them for the new coach in scramble time towards signing period..

If that's the case ..whoever has cutoff the recruiting visits must know butch is getting fired right ????

Or they wouldn't be saving them for no reason ?

All parties involved know he's gone. The fans know he's gone. The media knows he's gone. That's why it's infuriating for everyone to see them trot him back out every week. It's cruel.

You guys are crazy if you think Haslam tanked the Gruden deal. The simplest explanation and the one most supported is that Gruden doesn't want to coach CFB.

LWS is better known for dispeling bad info than releasing revelations. I am hopeful that for once his Frost info proves to be predicitive. The issue with hiring any good college coach is we have to wait until after regular season anyway. That only leaves firing Butch and promoting an interim. None of us knows if the team would actually respond better to an interim.
