UT owes CBJ $2.5 million for each full year remaining on his contract. His current contract runs through 2/28/21 so three full years remain, plus the pro-rated portion of this year. We owe him the balance of this year, whether he's on the sideline or at home. The buyout package will be less if he coaches the entire regular season, because he will have pocketed some of this year's monies due in monthly salary. But the bottom line is the same.
He earns a bonus for making a bowl. IIRC, it's $100K for a lower tier bowl. The bonus would be higher if we made a higher tier bowl or played in the SECCG, but that isn't happening. He's also owed small bonuses for other things, like APR.
He has a contractual responsibility to mitigate damages by making reasonable efforts to find a comparable/suitable job. If his marketability plummets because of this year's performance and he can't find suitable employment, we could be paying the full buyout in monthly installments until he's able to mitigate.
