To save his career. He needs to get out now or no one will ever hire him. I want Butch to be successful in the future, so hopefully this can end well for all parties involved.

Butch is never going land a job playing big boy football again. He will easily get another Cincinnati type job though with his recruiting ability. I just don't see how this helps him.

The terms of a buyout would be spelled out in the contract in the event the coach is fired. However, the coach choosing to quit is an entirely different matter. The buyout should be less in that instance.

But that doesn't make any sense. That's like the classic example of the employee yelling "You can't fire me, I quit!" right after they get fired.

Why would he resign and potentially take less money when his resignation or firing is simply a technicality..

We want him gone. If he wants to be gone... Great, fire him. If he doesn't... Great, fire him.

UNLESS

He doesn't want to finish the season, and the AD's leverage is to force him to finish it out if he doesn't resign.

Why would he offer to take less money than what he is already going to get for what is going to happen regardless of what he can do to change it?

Simple.
If butch continues to run a product onto the field like he has the past two games his stock continues to nosedive.
He's not looking to retire.
He wants another job.

I've said it before, Butch is a salesman. The longer he stays here the more his "brand" is damaged, and his ability to communicate the narrative to his next employer is undermined. The "toxic" point, while perhaps true, will be in his favor when telling his story to another school. It makes for a good reason to leave mid-season.

Keep in mind...that Oregon State job is wide open and needing a rebuild...that's another 5 years for Butch. And they might be thrilled with 8 wins and a bowl game.

I know where the ignore button is, but I've never used it. I look at it as my solemn duty to warn fellow Grudenites who may come into the middle of a conversation and take this clown seriously.

Its funny but I refuse to use the ignore option as well. I just feel like no matter how big of a dbag someone is trying to be I should give their opinion some merit otherwise I could cheat myself out of something I may not have thought about. Having said that most of the posts of these people I just skip anyway.

I think its more of the optics. He could resign and save more face (a little) than if he was fired and humilated. Resigning sounds better than fired IMO. at least for his next employer.

Butch and family are realizing that NOBODY wants him to be the coach anymore. His bosses don't, the fan's don't, his subordinates (assistants) don't, and his troops (players) don't. He has at least some pride. It is really hard to get up and try to lead people who don't want you to lead them anymore.

Technically the school willingly gave it to him, so he didn’t steal anything. Has he greatly underachieved? Of course, but that’s no reason for a few jack wagon fans to be ugly to his family. Any of us would agree to that kind of money!
This June he tried to strong arm our new AD into a contract extension probably knowing how this season was going to turn out. I have no interest in his family but I am having trouble feeling any sympathy or appreciation towards Butch.

It will be very interesting to see how this plays out.
What's more important to Butch?
1. The amount of buyout money.
2. Getting himself and his family out of Toxicville.

Currie is playing hardball with him right now.
I wonder just how far he is willing to let it drag on until he gets Butch to agree to the terms Tennessee wants?

I keep reading this “Make him take the Bama beating” rubbish. From the same minds that wanted us to buy our way out of the Oregon & Oklahoma games. Getting outplayed and out scored doesn’t scar athletes. It’s going into those matchups LIFELESS because you don’t believe in your head coach and he’s already checked out. That’s beyond irresponsible! Lower level teams get paid to be homecoming fodder and prepare teams for conference foes and they come out richer and ready for their next challenges...unless their coach is basically early scenes Buttermaker in the Bad News Bears. :fool: Interim will be named and no future employer docks his resume for stepping up.

He would not be able to recruit, and fall on his face there. 4-8.

I understand that.

I believe that its more the fact that the vast majority of the fan base is questioning his system, questioning his ability to coach, and questioning the reasons why he hasn't been fired. Along with things like "The official Butch Jones has been fired" thread. Countless articles by national outlets saying he's done in Knoxville. Social Media calls for him to be fired and the like as opposed to anyone being a-holes to his family.

I don't see anyone bad mouthing his kids, or his wife, or his personal lifestyle so much as everyone bashing his coaching ability. In that the atmosphere is very toxic her in Knoxvegas for someone who may or may not want to continue with their job.

The vast majority of fans have figured out that Butch’s bricks were really nothing more than straw.

This....even having the audacity to ask for a contract extension after the Vandy game last year told me everything I needed to know about Butch's bar for success and commitment to winning here.

This. As stated before, Currie is meticulous, and this is called putting screws to thumbs.
