You think Manning had any involvement last time?

I seem to remember last time around Peyton was trying to get Butch to come out to Colorado. I'd like to think that deep down he was trying to protect us. :)

(On talking to Butch Jones about taking the Colorado job)

"My boss, John Elway, had a good friend who was leading the Colorado search. He asked me if I would talk to this coach about coming to Colorado. At the time, Butch Jones hadn't been contacted by Tennessee. I didn't really know much about him either. When the boss asks you to make a phone call, you have to make a phone call. I said `I don't know anything about Colorado.' And he said `You tell him that this is a good place to play football and it's a nice place to live.' I said `I can do that.' I don't know anything else about the University of Colorado so that's what I did. It may have caused some confusion that I was recruiting a guy to come to Colorado. I recruit for one school and one school only, the University of Tennessee. I was doing a favor for Elway and my boss.

Same. I don’t think their info holds the water they think it does. I’m sure it’s real, but that means very little at the end of the day. they’re smart to not go overboard by getting ahead of themselves.... so far.

Yea, a lot of "deal is done" stuff last time. They're being very guarded this time. They're claiming their info is from the Gruden side and not the UT side.

I'd be all for Gruden to come here, I just think he has no interest in coaching college ball.

If he wants to coach again, he may have to go the college route. I'm not sure how in demand he is in the NFL. The further he gets from his last job, the less likely he coaches again. Jmo

I agree with this largely but I think he sees himself as a coach, not a has-been. I think he wants to coach and I think he wanted the Tennessee job last go round but we balked at his terms. I really believe that but I know a lot of people don't. My issue now is whether or not we'll accede to his terms this time. Currie is new, Davenport is new. I don't know about the BOT but I figure many along with most of the boosters are the same old faces. I've heard some positive chatter but nothing I would bank on. I'm waiting for more reliable sources before I'm convinced we've moved more in his direction.

Gruden is a jock. I think his identity as a coach is more important to him than an easy life. He wants to do something but he wants all the leverage for success stacked in his favor. He wants to win. It's a big step and it will require a shift in gears for him but the overriding consideration is as you noted, the clock is running. The thing that is going to drive him back to the sideline is his self image either that or his self image has got to change. He's either a coach or a has-been. It doesn't matter that much to you or me but I think it does to him and his outsized ego. jmo.

I think he would dominate in recruiting, at every position, and I think the year he signs his 2nd class we'll be in the playoffs. I think he believes that too. In any event I think he'd have a Majors/Fulmer type tenure here in regards to longevity. jmo.

Maybe, but I’m Thomas in this one

Unless I see it with me own eyes...

I think you're missing his point. He's not laughing at you because you said Frost, he's laughing at you because you said YOU wouldn't accept anyone less.

At least that's how I took it because I laughed and shook my head also.

These are the only names I'm willing to accept:

1. Jon Gruden
2. Chip Kelly
3. Scott Frost

Gruden is a no brainer. His name recognition, football mind, and NFL success would make him a slam dunk. Chip Kelly is more proven than Scott Frost at the Power 5 level so I have him at #2. However, I think Scott Frost has the higher ceiling. He could be another Urban Meyer.

In my opinion with Jon Gruden we get another Nick Saban and with Scott Frost we could have another Urban Meyer. They are the only names that are acceptable IMO.

The only thing that bothers me about Gruden is he has not been a college head coach. Recruiting by all accounts is a grind. Particularly at Tennessee which has traditionally recruited nationwide. I know he is intense hence the Chucky nickname.

Is he a disciplinarian ? If the reports are correct the team needs one to right the ship.

I don't think this team is in rebuild stage . There is talent. I think mentally they need a rebuild and this may be where he will shine.

Is he a slam dunk can't miss?

No interest

20x work with a pay cut and less job security?

“Sure!”

I think you underestimate people's passion for a job. Especially in a competitive environment.

If he wants to coach again, the fact he has to work more won't bother him. The thrill of competition on Saturdays will make up for it.

First of all, you gotta realize the #1 most important thing recruits are looking for is can you help me get to the NFL. That is the reason you see 5 star after 5 star sign with Urban Meyer and Nick Saban. Winning national titles is cool but even those coaches will tell you that what happens in the April is more important to their recruiting success. Kids watch the draft and see which coaches are sending guys to the league every year.

The fact Jon Gruden is a super bowl winning coach that is the voice of MNF and does the QB camp on ESPN will instantly give him credibility with recruits on the same level as Nick Saban and Urban Meyer. He'll be able to go to any 5-star recruits house and tell him he knows how to get him to the NFL. And the kids will buy it cause they've grown up their entire lives watching him call games on MNF and the Gruden QB camp. If you think Jon Gruden would have a tough time recruiting you are surely mistaken.

Also Tennessee has an advantage now it never had before. A dominant instate recruiting base. Sure in the past Tennessee needed to recruit nationally to compete for championships. Well not anymore. The state of Tennessee is now producing enough talent to build a championship contender with solely instate kids. Both the 2019 and 2020 recruiting classes are filled with highly sought after instate kids. 2019 class already has 20 instate kids rated as composite 4-stars. That is more than the 2017 and 2018 classes combined. And remember how highly we were talking about the 2017 and 2018 instate classes. Also the 2019 class is no aberration. The 2020 class is projected to be even more talented.

The state of Tennessee is loaded with talent now and Jon Gruden will be a star recruiter nationally. We will challenge Alabama and Ohio State for that #1 spot in recruiting every year.

I don’t, really. I often say that a fat buyout doesn’t ease the pain of failing at what you’ve tried so hard to achieve

He’s been away for a decade. One might think if he was that hot to coach again, he would be in the game already. Could be wrong... gotta show me though

Same here. I will believe it when I see it. I do think the guy truly loves Tennessee though. I wouldnt be totally surprised that he would take the job if the rumors of being offered full control are true.

Never said that.

He has a cushy job making millions. Does he want the headache? Does Momma Gruden want the headache?

Does he want his son to have to deal with fans if things go south?

What does his offense look like? I think the other candidates have an offensive track record you can point to.

I'm not against Gruden by any stretch of the imagination.

I am cautious in naming anyone a savior for Tennessee football.
