Give me your Top 3 canidates...

Josh McDaniels
Jim Bob Cooter
Brent Venables

I like McDaniels because he
-has NFL HC experience
-is young (41) and will relate to recruits
-is a QB whisperer that will pull top QB talent
-will run a pro style offense
-coached under Belichick and Saban

I see him coming to the Vols as similar to Tom Coughlin going to Boston College in 1991.

Before Coughlin arrived Jack Bicknell had recruited some legit talent to BC including future NFLers QB Glenn Foley, TE Mark Chumura, DE Mike Mamula, T Ron Stone, TE Pete Mitchell, C Tom Nalen, DB Michel Reed, LB Stephen Boyd.

But Bicknell could not take BC to the next level. Coughlin took Bicknell's recruits and made them a top 25 team including beating #1 ranked Notre Dame on the road in 1993.

I think JB Cooter could have similar success as he has similar attributes with the notable exception of no head coaching experience.

The risk with both is that they will surely return to the NFL just as Coughlin did.

I am unbelievably shocked at the number of people posting, what I would typically consider as smart vol fans, that actually placed Chip Kelly in their top 3. Are you kidding everyone now has caught onto, i.e. Helfrich out as he me? You actually think he could succeed in the SEC? He created or improved over time a gimmicky offense that ran the same thing in the PAC-12 and couldn't win. Not counting extremely soft defenses at Oregon and even with all the Samoans on the D-line and O-line and they are notorious for being strong. His defenses would get destroyed in the SEC. Also, per his former players including the NFL, he disrespects his players. And don't give me the "He won the PAC-12 and made it to the BCS", really, the PAC-12 when they were down during those years and he still had to out scored everyone 52-45. And a physical team like Stanford beat him more times than anyone. If he was hired would be the softest TN team every assembled. Other than Mariota, how many NFL players did he produce that are doing well in the league? I really thought you guys knew your football a little better than this. I am literally shocked at the number of people choosing him. Wow, I can't even the understand the thought process. If we hire Chip Kelly, it would be about as bad as hiring Dooley.

A lot of inaccurate things here. Multiple players in the NFL. Chip Kelly beat Stanford twice with Andrew Luck on their team. He beat Pete Carroll, Jim Harbough, David Shaw, a top 10 Dantonio Michigan State team, a top 5 Snyder Kansas St team, and a top 10 Bielema Wisconsin team that had Russell Wilsona and Monte Ball to just name a few. Helfrich then took Chips players and system and had a Heisman winning QB and went to the NC while beating Florida State en route. His defense held Auburn, who was averaging 43pts per game and had the Heisman QB Cam Newton, to 22pts. A variation of the spread offense is used by almost every successful football team in college. Chip turned a philly team that was 29th in offense to a top 5 offense his first year in the NFL, won his division once and went to the playoffs twice which better than Saban and Spurriers tenure's in the NFL. His offense averaged 300yds per game and is not a "gimmick", like I said variation of the spread is used by teams like Clemson, Oklahoma, bama, tcu, etc. Scott Frost is considered one of the best up and coming coaches in the country and he uses the same offense as Kelly from his time at Oregon and he has turned an 0-12 UCF team into a 4-1 squad in his 2nd season. Gruden says Chip Kelly is one of the best offensive minds in all of college football as well, pretty high praise from a guy that is very respected in the football community

Top 3 with head coach experience and a realistic option, if money is right:

1) Mark Dantonio - excellent coaching pedigree and wins big games (and was he not considered during the same search when CBJ was hired, maybe I am mistaken, but thought he was a serious option)

2) Les Miles - coached in the SEC and can beat Alabama, and actually like his crazy antics

3) Chip Kelly - no doubt can coach like heck on offense, but just not sure he would be committed long-term, especially if had early success. But, that argument can be made for all, I guess.

There are also definitely others that I would prefer and would be better options, (i.e., Peterson and Patterson), but do not think they are even options.

Next 3 (and more likely the realm where the powers that be will focus), with either some head coaching experience or are great coordinators:

1) Brent Venables - just WOW! This guy knows defense, but suspect he is staying put until kids are done with school

2) Neal Brown - he has developed a team (Troy) that plays with the big boys (see Clemson 2016 and LSU 2017)

3) Jeff Brohm - no doubt, he knows offenses, and has some promise

There are several other good options, but these are the ones that I would like to see get some serious consideration. But just my opinion, which when it is all said and done, does not mean squat!

And FYI - I am a former CBJ supporter. I do greatly appreciate what he has done with the program, considering the condition it was in when he arrived. But, I now agree, it is time for change.

1. Chip Kelly
2. Chip Kelly
3. Chip Kelly

He's an offensive genius, and a proven winner. He was 46-7 in 4 seasons at Oregon.

He left that roster loaded with talent, so we can know he can recruit.

He's sitting at ESPN waiting on a phone call. This reminds me so much of when Ohio State hired Urban Myer.

He would easily make the Vols relevant again nationally.

He would challenge Alabama by his second season at UT, and the first time he hangs 50 points on Satin, he would probably force him to retire.

He's the big splash, home run hire that the Vols have been waiting on!

The timing couldn't be better for the Vols to hire him!

Yes! Someone else gets it! I hope the admistration at UT gets it and writes the checks to make it happen! GBO

LOL

First: Have you seen Clemson play over the past few years?

"gimmicky offense" .......well it I still used in college football.......by most of the teams in the top 10.

"he still had to out scored everyone 52-45"......yet somehow his teams averaged 45+ while giving up 21...for his entire career.

I love how people get on here and spew opinion as if it were FACT.

Facts are his offense still works, facts are 5 of the 6 teams in the playoff NC games used at least a form of the offense, facts are Chip's D's gave up 21 ppg over his career, Facts are Chip went 10-3, 12-2, 12-1, & 12-2.......these are real facts, not what you want to simply believe and try to state as a fact.

Let me "spew" another fact that you seem to miss. The PAC-12. Hello, when they were down. I didn't have to go looking up stats, etc. I could probably go back and look at the polls and see who from that conference was in the top 25 during those years but I haven't, I watched the games. I think Maryville High School could hold some of those PAC-12 teams to 21 points per. Really...? Oh, and I didn't see any comment about Stanford which would be the closest team the PAC-12 has to a SEC team. Or Helfrich, now that the PAC-12 is better? He's unemployed. And you think TN fans would enjoy his disrespect and smart a$$ comments. Doubt it. But I have not a clue what I'm talking about. Is that why Chip Kelly is out of coaching? Heard anything about any other schools begging him to come in the past couple of years? I just "spewing tho".

I was trying to take your opinion and argument seriously until the Maryville High School remark. Then you just lost all credibility.

1.) Chip Kelly
2.) Bobby Petrino
3.) Jeff Brohm

I like Mike Leach as well, but I suspect John Currie will hire a more diplomatic head coach than him. Shear wins alone won't be the deciding factor, which is largely why we've had such a lackluster 15 or so years.

1- Chip Kelly
2- Dan Mullen
3- Tee Martin
4- Chuck Strong
5- Les Miles

While I hope to not have to go past option 1, I think 2/3 are solid fall back options and 4/5 are better than hiring coordinators (outside of Tee) or other mid major/up and comer coaches with zero name ID or recruiting prowess.

Chuck Strong eh? Hear he is pretty good.

Top Picks
Jon Gruden - w/Peyton Manning as OC
Chip Kelly

Acceptable
Bob Stoops - Had a great running game and plays strong defense
Dan Mullens

Skip
Les Miles - Could not win big at LSU with 5 star recruits
Bryan Kelly - Would be a ridiculous hire unless we want continue on the same downward trajectory
Tee Martin - Average coach at best
