I like Butch's offense but think it would work better if he recruited super athletic QBs who can kinda throw over guys who can throw and are only moderately athletic/not athletic at all.

Ideally you get one who ticks both boxes like Dobbs, but if you can't, get the guy who can make more plays with his legs, IMO.

Butch's offense can work with either. But it's about situational play calling. You run on 1st and goal and you don't run a read option on 3rd and 5 and your slower QB can't get outside. If QD had kept the ball on another 3rd down he would have gotten 5+ yards and a first down. It can work- just have to call the right plays at the right time. Our coaches haven't figured that out.

I think Gruden does move the bar quite a lot.

I think he also realizes that his clock is ticking and if he's going to go back, college or pro his window is closing.

You think Tennessee would have a shot at pulling a guy like Gary Patterson if we actually did pony up the cash?

I think we all kind of need to come to grips with the fact that if we do end up firing Butch, we don't have many good options. We may have to fire him anyway, but let's think about some of the names mentioned here:

Jon Gruden - Never happening.

Chip Kelly - Apparently doesn't like the idea of being in the south, is a walking NCAA infraction.

Bob Stoops - Stoops left OU on top for the sake of his health. He's never coming here.

Dan Mullen - Great coach, but also a walking NCAA infraction.

Mike Gundy - Played us once before already and his teams are usually defensively atrocious. Gimmicky offense well-suited to the Big 12, unclear it would translate here.

Justin Fuente - Apparently not much of a recruiter. Recruiting is a must at Tennessee.

Mike Norvell - Second year at Memphis with a team largely built by Fuente. Not nearly enough data.

Scott Frost - In second year at UCF, sitting at 7-7.

Chad Morris - Worse record than Dooley had when we hired him.

Mike MacIntyre - Just had a fresh scandal at CU. Last year was a great coaching job, but not enough data to know if it was a flash in the pan.

Our best bet might be to take a coordinator like Venables, but he's never been a head coach and I wonder why that is.

Norvell is recruiting the best classes in Memphis history. He recruited Riley Ferguson.

It's not a guarantee, but he just needs a high level DC.

Kelly isn't a great recruiter, he also always runs everything from shotgun. First time we don't get a top 15 class and don't lineup under center on 3rd and short or goaline, VN would want him fired.

He's 46-7, played in a BCS game every year he's coached, and won 3 conference titles in 4 years. I think he'd be alright here.

I bet if we offered Gruden 10m he'd take it. Can Currie do that and will we pony up? Michigan paid to get Harbaugh, we need to pay to get Gruden. Of course, the Ryan brothers may be looking for a job also.

You want to pay a guy who hasn't coached football in a decade $10 million/year?

So... did we officially cross the point of no return? Are Butch's days numbered?

It would take a miracle, and Butch has crapped the bed too many times to expect one.

It would take something like beating Alabama, which isn't happening.

All you guys jumping the gun again. Let the season play out. This will tell us a lot and it won't be speculation.

It's been five years, same mistakes are there, horrible management and development of personnel, terrible in game coaching, there's nothing to wait for. You think Butch rallies this team and beats Bama? Not a chance. JG starting could give them a spark, but Butch won't do it just like he wouldn't start Dobbs over Worley.

This has been pretty obvious for a couple of years now.

Obviously, firing him NOW would lead to administrative chaos.

The real question is... is it worth giving up 9-3/8-4 to roll the dice on someone new?

Not many teams have done well there. We sure didn't when we dumped fulmer.

Wouldn't say firing Jones this year is the right decision. Would have to have the right guy already locked up. But i think it's clear he's peaked. With the right combination of players and good QB, sure, he could go 10-2. But that's not what you pay a coach for. You pay to get 10-2/9-3 out of a 7-5 team. Or, 11-1, 12-0 out of your 10-2 level team.

As much as Butch has shown he doesn't have championship level coaching in him, hopping on the coaching carousel and hoping for the best isn't wise. Would have to time things right.
