Recruiting Forum Football Talk XXXVI

Meant it as a conversation I would have had before the season.

He did. He's already said we expect to win championships at UT and in football, that starts with winning the division. He said he and CBJ have had several productive meetings and everybody's in line with the expectations and how we can move the program forward to where we need it to be. I'm paraphrasing, but that's the gist.

Watching the CBJ show now:

We need to be able to run the football in the redzone

We need to let the emotions cool down

They made a one in a million play

Two to three plays win or lose a game

We have to run the football in the redzone

We can't have presnap penalties

Unbelievable individual effort by Justin Martin on the rundown

Now on to 15 minutes of commercials - brb

They're an explosive defense - you have to wear them down

Our defense kept us in the game

Taylor highlights

Chandler highlighs - yards after contact

Rookie field goal - were always planning to use 2 kickers this year

Taylor recovers fumble - pride ourselves on hunting football

Halftime talk - stay the course

Tyler Byrd block to spring John Kelly for big gain

Back to Justin Martin's rundown and strip

John Kelly 18 yard run

John 34 yard Touchdown Run - Brett Kendrick key block

John Kelly 52 yard screen play - we call that walking the sidewalk

Qunten to Ethan TD pass

Rashaan Gaulden's interception - practice that everyday in practice

FG by Medley

We didn't do a good job with situational football today unlike in the first two games

Will to win - team has displayed a lot of heart - now how do you bounce back

Promises we will get some things fixed

Lots more commercials - brb

Lots of things to build upon - it's still situational football

Lots of positive things to build upon

It all comes down to us

Rashaan Gualden is awesome

Direct correlation in the way you practice and the way you play

1 out of 3 in redzone efficiency

Everybody wants to go back to on the 1 yard line and goal to go including myself

Micah Abernathy didn't come out of the game one time

Ethan Wolf interview - don't let one loss turn into another loss

John Kelly interview - Just want to take advantage of my opportunities

Rashaan Gualden interview - Nigel Warrior tipped ball led to interception - try to learn from our mistakes

More commercials - brb

Ask the coach segment:

What makes Rashaan Gualden so special?

Race to maturity - playing at a very high level - when Rashaan Gaulden talks everybody listens

Back at home against UMass - got to create energy for our fanbase

Bob we're going to fix this. We're going to get this right.

Lots of football yet to be played.

End of Butch Jones part of the show.

I disagree. It sets the tone and let's him know this isn't a coasting job.

It's a growth job.

Who cares what you lost talent wise - you are s great recruiter who has replaced all the talent, right?

Get it done then.

It's remarkable to me how delusional this fanbase is. We haven't won more than 8 games in over a decade or won the east.
We lose our QB and all time career sack leader amonst other key parts. Vegas puts our overall win total at 7.5 and we want our new AD to put down the ultimatum that we have to win the east or fire the coach.

Delusional!

The East games will be the barometer on whether CBJ is retained (imo). Lose any of the remaining games and believe Currie makes a change. If so, short list of candidates could be :

Mullen (doubt he leaves Starkville at least he knows what it ls like to face Bama every year)
Fuentes (VaTech) - think he is an up and comer and could be a good fit
Mason (I know but stranger things have happened. Will be interesting to see how their season goes, He would raise the bar with the Vol's resources and is destined to leave Vandy)
Venables ( Clemson's DC) - Knows what it takes to succeed at this level.
Jeff Brohm - star is rising
Shoop - If he wants to get back into coaching

Need to see forward progress, Tennessee should never settle

Because we keep making crappy coaching hires. We have another one on our hands. It's year 5 and he lost a game not due to lack of players, but due to his own stupid coaching mistakes. There's a pattern.

And that Vegas win total is because of Butch Jones. Not because of the inherent lack of talent on the roster. No one respects him as a coach and for good reason.

He needs to go at the end of the season barring a miraculous turnaround.

Darth and I last ones on the train. Not over yet. Not looking good but not over.

I am on the train with yall but he has to beat Georgia and then win 8-9 games before the bowl game. We need to go 5-3 in the EAST period. It can still be done despite the stubborn purple porpoise.

Meant it as a conversation I would have had before the season.

I don't think that helps much though. Butch is as stubborn as he is because he truly believes that his system and philosophy will get us to the next level with minimal/no adjustment.

Honestly I could see him interpreting a conversation like this as "dig in and tighten down!" as opposed to "dude, you've gotta make some changes to your core philosophy."

Man there are just too many bonehead moves from this coach to overlook it anymore. Even if we finish the season reasonably strong, he just mismanages the team. Don't want an interim any time soon but he needs to go after the season.

Honestly I think I'm somewhere between you and volatil

It wasn't on Dormandy

Yes it was more on Dormady. That throw was a little too high, needs to hit him in the numbers. If it's going to be high it shouldn't be touched cause what happened will be the result. It still hit Calloway in the hands but just a little out of his reach.

Agreed. As long as we don't lose 6 or more he has next year to do that. Much easier to take the step of going from 5-6 wins to 8 than it is the next jump. We are very close. Scheme may keep us from making it but we knew what kind of scheme we were getting when we hired him.

Obviously a tough, tough loss. Still lot's of football to play this years. Gut check time.

I agree-- that's the path. Beat UGA in Neyland, finish 9-3 and get to ATL with the tiebreaker. UGA draws Miss St and Auburn from the SECW, and they have to get past an improved UK and Vandy, too. It's still possible.

We knew what kinda scheme we were getting, but it's not like we had much of a choice lol Butch was the best coach available who wanted to work here.

The spread was hot then with Auburn and CUM. It was my only worry when he was hired and it is still my worry but he gets next year to ride it out. He deserves it with his recruiting and turning the program back around.

Yes. 4-1 heading into the bye week and we're fine. Beat UGA and the East is more than in play.

Georgia is critical. If he wins that game, I'm back. Georgia is the best team in the east. I feel if we beat Georgia that we'll go 10-2, 9-3 at worst. If Butch loses 4 games it's a tough call. Loses 5 he's done.

Eh no use to lock in to 2018 yet.

Let this season work out and decide from there.

The most Tennessee thing that can happen moving forward is Butch doing just enough to make it extremely difficult for Currie to fire him, but not enough to move the needle with fans, recruits, or national perception. So he'll extend him and then Butch will promptly lose to WVU and UF to start 2018, only now with a massive buyout protecting him.

That's EXACTLY what I am afraid of.

So you give him a raise and extension at 7-5, because that's what has to happen for him to continue to be able to recruit.
