Well, I've calmed down. My wife called me right at the end of the game and her and the kids were out and had a flat tire. I had to go change that for her and had a chance to collect my thoughts.
I think everyone would agree that I've been one of the more positive posters on this board since I've been here for a year. I try to be as optimistic as possible. But tonight showed something very clearly: We have the players, and have had them for 3 years, we do not have the coach to win big. I have tried to overlook things for the past 3 years, but now they are more obvious than ever. That was the worst Florida team I've seen in my life time, and Butch, with more talent, in year 5, could not win. And even if he did win, it would have been because we have better players, not because of how he coached the game.
The past 3 years we have seen:
1. Serious problems in handling of personnel. Examples: Young starting as KR over Berry; jumper over DK/Bituli especially in key moments; the mishandling of Tyler Byrd. He was an All American DB and we have put him at wide receiver only to never target him with the ball. Even though he's listed as 2nd string, we will not play him at corner in spite of the fact that corner is our weakest position on the defense; The refusal to get younger guys experience in cupcake games, be it because we play so conservative that we can't put them in or we just don't develop them that way.
2. Conservative play calling. This coaching staff has coached not to lose since they've been here. See 2015 especially, but last year it was there to. In a strange twist, I felt they played the opposite tonight, and this relates to point one, instead of running the ball with their best player, they decide to throw the ball all over the yard in the red zone with a QB who was clearly having big time struggles. What in the world?
3. Talent development. It's year 5, and our 5 star players do not play like 5 stars. Look at Florida's DL how disruptive they were all night. Ours, in spite of a few plays, where almost a non factor. Those guys are highly rated and have not been developed. See Martin and the OL as examples of this as well.
4. Gameday coaching decisions: This is where Butch has struggled the most. This relates a lot to point 2. Some of his decisions just leave us scratching our heads, especially the way they called the game inside the 20 tonight and putting Jumper in for a large portion of the game even though it was clear he was a liability. Also, playing it safe with QD. We know what we have with Dormady. he's a below average QB with a lot of issues such as staring down receivers, throwing off the back foot, making bad decisions etc. etc. He was clearly struggling tonight, and Butch still will not take a chance to bring in the number 1 QB recruit in the country, who, if nothing else, could help the run game and I have a hard time believing that he couldn't pass as well or better than Dormady. But Butch will not take the chance with him and it is probably going to cause him to transfer.
5. Firing the S&C coach last year. Enough said.
I just don't think he can get it done anymore. If nothing else, his development of and use of personnel is the most concerning thing about him as a coach. I just don't think he can win at this level. We need to get Chip Kelly before someone else does. Pay the money. Try and hire the guy from OK state if we can't get Chip. Get someone who can win here. We are too talented to not be able to win.
A good coach wins by a blowout tonight. See Michigan. And yet, here we are with yet another loss to Florida.
Again, we have the players. We have had the players for 3 years, and we still can't win. That is coaching. There's nothing else it could be.
