I'm being 100% genuine when asking this. Who is a (realistic) better replacement on the market? What coach out there could we get to replace would be an obvious improvement. Florida and Georgia could only pull McElwain and Smart with the same amount or program prestige (or whatever you'd like to call it) and better recruiting home states.

But in that same breath, Oregon, VT and Texas made pretty solid hires recently. (I think Herman is a good hire, but I don't know if it's possible to win at Texas anymore)

It's a valid point IMO. We can do a lot worse than Butch. Just a tough situation to be in with him as an AD because he hasn't proven he can take us to championship levels but he has proven we can be a pretty consistent 8-4 type of program. That's where the issue is with me. Have no problem with his recruiting or how he runs a program off the actual field. If I'm Currie and Butch wins less than 8 this year, I'd be looking to make a move. I'd also have to be as sure as I can be that the guy I'm about to bring in will be a step up.

This. I want to be up there with the Clemsons, Florida States, Oklahomas, Ohio States, etc. That's not unrealistic. Tennessee is an all time top 10 program and that's where the expectations should be IMO. Not saying Butch can't get us there, but this year probably will tell all with him.

I noticed you didn't list anyone in the SEC, even if you throw out Alabama. Kind of ironic.

Here's a question: would you rather the season go 8-4 with losses vs UF, UG, Lsu and Bama. Or go the exact same way as last season

Not saying this is false, but my God the meltdown that would occur.

Yeah I agree. But just being a G5 guy isn't that big of a deal, IMO.

Texas snagged a good G5 guy, IMO (Maryland loss notwithstanding)

VT may be set for a long time with their G5 guy.

Oregon might be well off with their G5 guy.

Problem is, I'm not sure there's a Tom Herman/Justin Fuente/Willie Taggart in this year's crop of G5 guys (though I am high on Chad Morris). Most of the promising guys are still in year 2/3 and you'd like to see a steady upward 3-4 year track record or (like Herman) has spent some time coaching offense/defense for a big time program.

If we made a move, it would likely be to a G5 guy. I don't really see us hiring a guy from another P5 school, not that that's necessarily a bad thing.

I think there are a lot of great G5 coaches out there right now though. IDK who it will be, but I'd be willing to bet one of the next great CFB coaches is currently building his resume in G5. IDK if the timing will be right for us to hit on the next big guy to come out of G5 though.

Coaches who seem to be poised to make jumps to P5 over the next 1-3 years:

Scott Satersfield: App State (though admittedly a harder pull because he coaches at his Alma Mater)
Scott Frost: UCF (likely needs another year or two)
Frank Wilson: UTSA (he needs a lot of time to cut his teeth, IMO, but dude is already a MONSTER recruiter with in roads to LA and got UTSA to their first ever bowl game his first year as HC)
Mike Norvell: Memphis (likely needs to show more over the next year or two)
Chad Morris: SMU (Destined for aTm job, IMO)

if Jones wins 7+ wins, yet a move is still made, it better be a better hire than any of those listed here.

Now, you lost me. Fulmer got old and lazy as EVERYONE knows. He got out coached by the new hot shots. He was not hired by any team afterwards to prove my point. Kiffin believe it or not, was the "right" hire at the time. 20-20 shows he was the WORST hire ever.

However, you are spot on with the joke reference. We are not respected nationally currently and his lame quotes don't help.

I'm talking about the Fulmer glory years when the only team that had our number was Florida. And they were a juggernaut as well.

It may just be me but Chad Morris has the name of a great coach. Like ya know how some ppl have those names and ur just like "Yup he's gonna be really good".

I like what he's doing at SMU a lot. Not sure if I'd hire him after just 3 seasons as a HC though.

So, you're on the train at 9-3, regardless of who pins the three losses on us? I now hope even more that we get there just to see how you react. I think you find a poster who thinks like you do and you all feed each other back and forth. You have made a few good points, but you are running some of these comments straight to China. Show me.

If he goes 8-4 and loses to UF, UGA, Bama and LSU who has he beat? At least if he goes 9-3 he will have beaten at least one of those schools with a top 5 class coming in and everybody returning going into 2018.

Even if he isn't elite and makes stupid decisions sometimes, taking us from 5-7 to 9-4 with 3 straight bowl wins does not constitute turning us into a joke. Get ****ing real.

Fulmer level as a championship threat. Can play with anyone, anywhere and at anytime. Nationally respected everywhere..... Right now he has Tennessee as a JOKE.....

This. Don't know about some of you guys but I want to have that respect back nationally that we used to have. I don't expect Tennessee to win a championship every year but I do expect them to be competing for one every year.

I know you love him but hiring Taggart would get killed by 75% around here as being "beneath us" as a program.

Depends on how we look in those games, IMO. If we take care of business against USCe, Vandy, Mizzou, and UK but play good football and come up short against those other 4, I'd probably rather take that. If we can't keep at least half of UF/ UGA/ LSU/ Bama close, then I'd rather take the wins against UF and UGA along with the ugly losses.

Agreed. 7-5 wins most likely meand a DC change, IMO. 8-4 and I think most of the staff is safe.

If we fire Butch for 7-5, then I'm assuming Currie has some P5 coach he thins he can bring in that is pretty good.

The man went from 2-10 to 10-2 in four seasons. That 75% can say what they want, but I don't think USF had ever posted a double digit win total until that season.
