Look, I am really happy we won. I am a charter member of the sunshine pumper's club. But... we have to face some facts. In the last 10 years, over 15,000 teams have taken the field to play in over 7,500 games. This has included some really good teams and some real cellar dwellers. In all of those 15,000 teams, ONLY 50 (less than .33%) have given up over 500 yards rushing in a game. Of those 50, 47 lost. We are in rarified air here.
But, but, but, it was Georgia Tech! OK, Paul Johnson has coached 119 games at Georgia Tech. Only 1 team has yielded 500 yards rushing to his vaunted flexbone offense- Kansas in 2011, when they went 2-10 and had the 120th rated defense in the country out of 120 teams.
In 113 years of UT football, we had never yielded 500 yards rushing. The most ever was 1986 against Alabama, when we gave up 447 yards. (That was also the day I spilled Jack Daniels on my crotch in section C. As badly as that burned, watching our defense was worse... but I digress.)
Unfortunately, this is getting to be a habit. We gave up over 400 rushing yards to three teams last year. That makes 4 teams for Coach Shoop. I remind you that Sal Sunseri NEVER allowed 400 yards rushing.
