Kirby Smart: "We had one coach that told us we had better talent. Then he had 6 guys taken in the 1st 4 rounds and we had 1 player drafted"

This wasn’t the haymaker that Steve Spurrier used to throw at Tennessee every year, but it was a minor punch directed at Butch. We don’t see too much of this anymore, which is a shame. I’m not sure when or where Butch said that Georgia had more talent, maybe that was behind closed doors.

Smart also noted that his eight win season was a disappointment, just hours after Butch Jones said his nine win season was not a disappointment. Stark contrast there in attitude.

Maybe Kirby is still a little upset about the miracle Tennessee pulled off between the hedges last year. I hope he is. Rivalries are a good thing — we need more jabs like this.

VN thoughts? Like the jab? Think it's in poor taste? Just a salty coach still upset about the Dobb-nail Boot?

Also, because it never gets old:

Interesting - he just publicly acknowledged that Tennessee put 6x :) as many players in the draft as Georgia this past year. Hope recruits are listening!

the one thing I treasured about spurrier is that he never made an excuse for losing.

Never said we lost because the other team had some sort of advantage, or injuries, or you name it.

When we lost, we lost. He would express how he wasn't happy about losing and that losing was bad.

His "zingers" were almost always aimed at teams he beat or after winning. He very rarely zinged teams that he lost to.

Kirby replaced a guy who rolled out of bed with 9/10 wins per year. He is under considerable pressure.

Pundits everywhere are picking UGA to win the East this season based on the perceived talent. The draft explanation is nonsense - simply came down to Malone and Barnett leaving early while Chubb and Michel came back to school. Otherwise draft picks would be virtually equal.

The truth is UGA has no excuse not to be more talented than anyone in the East. If they're not, it's only Kirby's fault.

If that's a jab, Kirby needs to beef up. If words were muscles, Kirby is trying to make Pee Wee Herman look like a bad ass. He came off looking like Wile E. Coyote after trying out his latest package from Acme.

If Kirby hasn't won the East in another 3 seasons, I doubt he'll still be there.

Really wish Butch had this mindset. Don't think he ever will.

I don't understand all the hate towards Kirby. If it wasn't for his "coaching" last year, the DobbNail boot would have never happened.

I hope Butch sent Kirby a thank you card for the gift UGA gave us. Imagine how hot Butch's seat would be if Kirby and UGA didn't F up in a typical UGA type of way

Guess Kirby is struggling developing talent to get drafted.

This!
He better be careful. Having the talent he had and also having his draft issues reflects poorly on his ability to develop talent.

The results on the field this year will answer important questions for both teams

Don't try to church it up, Floridian. Steve Orr had a chip on his shoulder for Tennessee from the time they didn't offer him coming out of high school. Spurrier would toss a zinger at the Vols as easily as he would exhale - anytime, anywhere, no provocation needed.

Spurrier is quick enough to pull it off. Most football coaches just don't have his wit and timing. Miles was pretty good at it too.

Ditto for throwing zingers at UGA, who dealt Spurrier several painful losses as a player.

However to 99's point, HBC almost never made excuses or threw shade at an opponent following a loss...the complaints over FSU hitting Wuerffel late following the '96 regular season loss comes to mind, but that's about it.

HBC just rarely lost to UGA or Tennessee, so his zingers usually came at our rival's expense following a UF win.
