Look at the East. UF is replacing an NFL defense. Everyone has holes and issues.

I agree but I don't like the odds of breaking n a new qb in the swamp. I realize by then both qbs will have some experience under their belts but not in an environment like the swamp. If we can put the game on the oline and Kelly, I think we win. If we have to rely too much on the passing game, I think we lose.

I'm thinking Dormady starts against Georgia Tech with Guarantano getting a few snaps depending on how the game goes. Could see Tennessee running a two Qb system for at least the first couple of games.

Close here my friend but not so fast. If both are ready, I think they both play depending on the situation. We will have a two QB system like Butch utilized at times in Cincy. So everyone can be happy and we can play JG the majority of the snaps against Bama.

I'm not making excuses for Butch but a rebuild from where this program was isn't normally always an upward trajectory. There are peaks and valleys. I think the inexperience at the qb position, lack of a proven LB core, lack of a proven running back behind Kelly, and adjustment to larger than normal coaching turnover will result in a loss or two no one will see coming. I do think 8-4 should be expected but I wouldn't be surprised at 7-5 either. I don't think Butch is going anywhere at 7-5 or maybe even 6-6 (unless he leaves on his own). These are always financial decisions and financially there's no reason to fire him. Jmo

If he somehow goes 6-6 this year he'll be dealing with one heck of a pissed off fanbase. Just can't envision him surviving that type of a season after year 5. But I do think the chances of Tennessee going 6-6 are very low.

Two QB system doesn't work. Butch didn't shuttle QBs at Cincy...either Legaux or Kay had a ding up issue and they played accordingly. If JG plays exclusively against Bama it's because he won the job...either after Fall camp or after a few games.

I am talking about picking spots. Both will play. Think leak and Tebow. I hate em too and usually don't work but in certain circumstances it can for a few plays. The JG / Bama game was just to make BB happy. It's how you work the deal. Can I now be President?

Well he ran on Bama and Wisconsin. He set the tone along with Zeke by punishing Bama. He was enough of a threat running the ball to hold a defender. Remember when Worley was running read option and they were killing our RBs. You have to hold the LB since Bama uses the LBs to help out on QBs who can hurt them.

Yeah...Worley was a strong competitor. So was James Banks back in the day. Neither was the prototype for their respective styles. Brendan Kay churned out a decent number of rushing for Butch at Cincy. Dormady's better than that. If he or JG can't make the passes against Bama, neither will accomplish what you automatically have JG capable of...neither are Dobbs.

I'll be one of them but I know how things work with this university. I am confident they'd give him one more year at 6 and 6 with a relatively young team.

Never considered that Leak/Tebow thing a true two QB deal. Package plays. And sticking JG out there just for Bama is recipe for disaster...unless he wins the starting spot. BB will never be truly happy...because that would make him sad. :)

I dunno, I loved seeing our WR's get hyped on the sidelines of the O&W game after Dormady's TDs. I think he sparks confidence in our receiving corps because they know he has a special arm.

Go with who makes the receivers happy.

I think Butch is fired if he doesn't win 8, personally. Too much negativity in the air and it will only get worse.

5 losses means at least one to a team we all think Tennessee should beat. I personally think the only legitimate 50/50 games on the schedule are UGA, UF, LSU and Bama, and I like our chances at home against two of those. We have no business in year 5 losing to anyone else on our schedule. Too much talent.

This all day. Only thing I somewhat disagree with is if Tennessee loses 5 that'll mean they've dropped at least two games to inferior teams. The negativity will be ridiculously high and will squash any kind of momentum going forward for the program.

our fans love negativity unfortunately.

I was livid after last year's meltdown and said butch would not be our coach in 2018. However after several months of thinking about it, I believe it would take a 5-7 or 6-6 type year for him to be fired and I don't see that happening.

It also helps butch that he seems to be doing a lot better in recruiting this year so far (excluding CB and LB)

Especially with the staff he has now and the recruiting class he has coming in

My only fear if JG wins the job is that QD will transfer (he will, no doubt) and then if JG gets hurt which he has a history of doing, we're trotting freshman Will McBride out there. That's a quick way to a bad season. Regardless if we believe McBride has potential, he's not ready to play in the SEC. I'd feel less concerned if Dormady won the job this year, he a good year like Mitch Trubisky and got drafted, and then JG takes over next year when Penix and Martinez are here to go along with McBride as back ups. I mean, if JG is truly better, let's go, but let's pray he doesn't get hurt

Butch isn't gonna name a starter in time for them to transfer before the season.

IMO....QD is taking the first snap of the season. Both will play in game 1.

Exactly what I've been saying. I'm not even sure 6-6 with a bowl win gets him fired.

we arent as bad as everyone thinks. people gotta calm down.

This.

Plus, to me, the SEC looks like Alabama and 8 teams tied for 2nd.

No one looks head and shoulders above anybody else. Someone will probably shake out to be, but I'll be damned if anybody can pick that now. For every positive you can pull for each team, there's a glaring negative. That's why I'm so confused when people just chalk up 5 pretty sure losses.

It'd be pretty disappointing if it wouldn't. I think it would feel very similar to how it did after Dooley lost to Kentucky in his second year. Anybody who has a clue would know the program is going nowhere.

Those in this thread thinking we are going to waltz into the Swamp and roll will be sadly mistaken. It's gonna be a dogfight to get out of there with a win.

I think it's night and day different than Dooley. Dooleys ship was sinking faster than some people could get off. While 6-6 would be terribly disappointing, the difference in the rosters is astronomically different. We are replacing a lot this year but with equal talent, just not much experience.
