Reflection on VolNation and Fandom

In threads like this one, you learn (or re-learn) just how many people have (apparently) never in their lives been on a really good team, one that had the strength of spirit and strength of community described in the OP and by others in this thread.

For those people, it's like the words have little or no meaning. They've never experienced that type of bond, and so can't mentally picture it. They quite literally can not 'get it.'

Sometimes we forget how blessed we've been in various aspects of our lives. Immensely thankful for all the teams I've been on that were strong together.

Not better than anyone, no. Just had the good fortune of greater richness of experience ... if in fact you have never been on any team like that.

But you knew that before you rhetorically asked. :)

I know Jake. Wish others understood the OP better and enjoyed the board more like this.

Ya know?
i do. it does get old, even as a more than willing participant in more than my fair share of butch bashing....i can acknowledge that.

i was thinking about JP's analogy, though in a different sense. if i were in a bar, who would i want to do what we do here, in person, watching/discussing football?

not sure about the whole fascist thing JP is trying to push.....no thinking, conform, unite, communism needs you!!!.....:)

Best team I was ever on from a personal satisfaction standpoint 3 out of 4 of us got fired within months of each other but we had mutual respect amongst ourselves, socialized together in and outside the office, and presented a mostly united front. We may have created an echo chamber amongst ourselves that made us tone deaf to some things our management and clients were trying to tell us. It really was a good group though and I am very glad I did not stay in that position much longer.

By "good fortune of a greater richness of experience," Jake, I meant "you suck."

I just wasn't sure you fully understood that. :)

Heh, sounds both powerful and oddly counter-productive.

Now imagine that kind of cohesion where it binds EVERYONE in the organization together, not just 4 of you. :good!:

well do me a favor next time, leave the coding out, and just get to it. you know, i'm a little slow on the uptake....not enough worldly experience to understand inferences and innuendo.

k?

Only if you put stock into it. Bamawriter has me on ignore also. :)

Yea, well when certain people take things I say out of context, knowing what I meant and make up crap to benefit their agenda, It doesn't ruin my day, sorry fade, but I want to address it.

I know it's just a message board, but there are some that ain't gettin the message. :good!:

I reckon I'm older than most on VN. Six decades are already in my rear view mirror, and I'm rolling through the seventh. I witnessed the Artful Dodger live and in person during my matriculation at UT. Back then, fans would send moving vans to Bill Battle's house. Imagine the impact to his family...

I've seen a helluva lot since then, glorious victories on the gridiron, ignominious defeats, great coaching, wretched coaching, Vols fans working together in the rain to push a visiting Bammer family's car off the shoulder and back onto the pavement, a purported Tennessee fan (wasn't wearing a scrap of orange) angrily shoving my wife for being halfway into the stadium aisle (she was allowing someone seated in the middle of the row to make their exit before returning to her seat)... Mostly, I recall the innumerable acts of generosity, good will, and displays of good humor which identify Vols fans wherever they may be gathered together. This has been our general group character.

Experience has lengthened my view, tempered my perspective, and deepened my fandom. I know when to indulge in flights of fantasy and how to fully enjoy these as well as when and how to face the cold, hard truth. I've been on the path for awhile, and I'm a more enlightened fan.

I get the OP. I get the impatient whippersnappers barking all over the threads. I get the negavols letting the air out of the raft, and I get the pumpers putting the raft into the river expecting nothing but blue skies and gentle breezes. It's all in perspective for me. Now, when you're ready to take a breath and offer me a refreshing beverage, I'll be genuinely appreciative. GBO.

This is a good analogy 82!!

I'm hoping I can be around long enough to have my post count as high as yours and some others. We'll have to wait and see about that when the season starts. I tend to get "emotional" sometimes and that doesn't always set well on here.

Saying that, I've never insulted anyone on here. Never called them names or belittled anyone. I don't care how much I disagree, that's just not the right way to do things.

My ole' buddy KB and I have exchanged debates on here for years relating to the Fulmer/Majors deal and contributed a lot of posts to the Fulmer Extravaganza thread. Finally though, I did understand his point of Fulmer helping Majors build the program.

My point, it's good to be a fan. It's good to be passionate. But, there is a line when it comes to attacking other posters. Even the trolls.:hi:

"for years", huh.
