Is Peyton The GOAT

GOAT is kind of a pointless argument. But I would NOT put any other QB above Peyton. Certainly not Montana (whose stats Peyton nearly doubled) or Brady (who will have to play 3 more seasons than PM to match him) -- just because they played on better teams.

Drew Brees is in a better position than Brady to break all of Peyton's records and no one ever talks about him.

Peyton had way better Wr's and RB's than Brady has had(for the most part). Montana played with great players, but you can't deny how great and clutch he was in the playoffs.

I love Peyton, but I'm not sure how Brady isn't on the top of everyone's list.

I think people take way too firm of a position on these things. Brady will have had the greatest career, but everybody has different opportunities, challenges, and advantages. Who is the best QB? and who is greatest QB? are sort of 2 different questions. For "best" you can make a case for Elway, Marino, Manning, Brady, Unitas, and Montana and I won't say you're wrong.

Who played the majority of his career in a pass happy offense in a division where they were pretty much always the best team for over a decade. So, you should feel free to go **** yourself.

I guess my post could be interpreted to be insulting, but it wasn't intended that way. But that's okay. You're not the first person to tell me to quadruple asterisk myself.

Yea.

I always hated this argument/discussion.

It's good for one thing, learning about posters.
Not who they pick but if they give an opinion/vote or state as fact because they've decided.

These are the same people who will tell you you're wrong about YOUR favorite restaurant. Lack of humility is most common amongst youth but it's by no means guaranteed to go away with age.

Pretty much this. There's a good 5-6 QBs at least that you can make the claim.

In the end, it really doesn't matter. They're all going to be in the HOF, they all won Super Bowls....er.....well...sorry Dan.

I know what you mean. Any uniform thread does the same. Those are one of my favorites. :)

Yeah, I remember when everyone said Edgerrin James' running kept defenses guessing and was the reason why Peyton was so good. Then James left the Colts and disappeared and Peyton went on to win two Super Bowl rings. People tried to give credit to Marvin Harrison, too. Then he retired and Peyton just kept racking up the 4000+-yard seasons, including his record-breaking 5000-yard 2013 season several years afterwards.

Players came and went, but Peyton was still Peyton. Giving credit to his teammates for Peyton's success is like saying Leonardo Da Vinci knew where to buy the best paint brushes.

People waaay underestimate, IMO, the benefit Brady has had by playing for the same head coach his entire career. OBTW, that coach is recognized as the greatest of his era and his teams the most dominant. If you drop passes or run the wrong route on a Belichick-coached team you don't play. It's as simple as that. That's why he continues to win no matter who takes the field -- including the year when Brady was injured and they still won 11 games with a different guy taking the snaps. It's arguable whether Peyton had better WRs/RBs, but there's no argument that Brady played on the better teams, with better run production and defense.

I love Peyton, but I'm not sure how Brady isn't on the top of everyone's list.

Yeah, because unlike Peyton, Brady won all of those SBs without any help from his teammates, right? We're not discussing the most successful QB or the QB who played on the best team. We're talking about the best to play the QB position. Brady has played the same # of seasons as Peyton, but he will have to play 3 more seasons at a high level to surpass Peyton's records. If you can just dismiss that as insignificant, then I guess we'll just have to disagree.

Manning was a starting quarterback for 17 seasons, Brady has been a starting quarterback for 15 seasons. How is that the same number? They both missed a season due to injury.

Brady is the GOAT, as much as I hate to say it. Injuries shortened Manning's career.

Take Manning off his team, and they'll be picking first in the next year's draft. Take Brady off his team, and theyll still win 11. It's a proven fact.

Sure, and still not make the playoffs.

Also it helps when you intentionally suck for Luck.

I always thought the same about his recievers here. But, Pearless ended up top notch.

So you're going to penalize Manning for being good enough to start as a rookie? You're right that Brady has played one fewer season than Peyton, so I stand corrected on that. My main point is still valid. Brady will still need more games to surpass Peyton, if he does at all.

And while Brady has been trying to catch Peyton, he has been surpassed by Drew Brees, who no one ever seems to talk about in these discussions. Brees has also done more in fewer games than Brady.

Brady may not even be the second-best QB of his era.

You can make an argument for Peyton. I would argue for Brady.

I just don't think any other QB that I've ever seen is going to go out and win Super Bowls with Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola, etc. Not to mention doing that at age 39. That in the twilight of your career these are the turds you have to carry to a championship and he has.

However, it needs to be made clear here that an argument for, in this case Brady, is not disrespectful of Manning.

There are a bunch of QB's from yesteryear that would love to play in this pass happy era where breathing on a QB is illegal.

I'm not penalizing anyone. You're the one who made the statement, I simply corrected you. As for may not even be the second best quarterback of his era. Sure thing bud. Why did both Tony Dungy and Reggie Wayne say last year that Brady was better than Manning? Seems odd that two future hall of famers won't go to bat for one of their former players/teammates.

Your last point is spot on. Could you imagine the numbers Marino would put up in this era.
