Another questionable quote from Butch today

A little mathematics logic test, for NegaVols.

Person A says that, "9 is greater than 5."

Person B can respond in these ways; which is illogical?

-- "Yes, 9 is significantly greater than 5, in fact, it's almost double."
-- "Agreed, 9 is greater than 5, but 15 is bigger still."
-- "ZOMFG, NO! YOU CAN"T ACCEPT 9, WE DON"T ACCEPT 9, THAT'S MEDIOCRE!"

I'll wait for you to think through the possible responses.

p.s. You are certainly welcome to write in your own response; I really look forward to seeing those. Please keep it in mathematical terms, though, that's the construct.

For the Butch apologists, I offer you this. We fired Fulmer because stagnant recruiting and occasionally limping into Atlanta wasn't good enough. We did that to a BCS championship winner who was orange to the bone. The standards have not changed. It's not about being better than Dooley. It's about being champions again. Butch isn't going to get us there. Crying about how he's better than Dooley, and 49 years old, and he's a whole new guy because he's allowing 7v7, and whatever other excuses you want to pull out of your butts isn't going to change the fact that Butch blew his best chance to win the East. There is no coming back from that.

Beating Georgia and Florida in the same year is contending for the Division. Most years it would win it. Contending for the division is contending for championships. No problem with his statement.

Non-CFP bowl wins are ultimately meaningless in modern college football.

Show me a coach from the last decade who was fired for not winning the Outback Bowl.

There's only one game that counts and it's the NC game.

Once we were out of the NC contention what do the losses matter?

Losses are not meaningless.

Now you are lowering the bar by saying bowl wins don't matter unless it's the NC bowl.

Or did you mean something else?

Logical flaw #1: assuming that because "we fired Fulmer," it makes sense to fire people at that point.

Logical flaw #2: we will never do better than 2015, can never do better.

Other than that, the post wasn't dumb. Rude, yes, but not really stupid. Except for those two key flaws.

The only way #1 is illogical is if you don't subscribe to the standard.

#2 is based on empirical evidence. There is a track record. Ignore it if you like, but that makes you the illogical one in this discussion.

string VFL-82-JP("Rambling in arithmetic")
var OOCWins=0
var SECWins=1

If(OOCWins>=SECWins){ VFL-82-JP="Witty Genius" }

Else if(OOCWins<SECWins) {VFL-82-JP="Barbara Jones' VN Handle"}

If James Franklin would have said that Vanderbilt was a championship contender while he was there, this board would have been posting pictures, memes, stats, jokes, puns, etc etc

If Sumlin called Texas A&M a championship contender, everyone would roll their eyes.

And to those saying that this is a millennial mindset...
I can't imagine anything more "millennial" than claiming the SEC East title is a championship.

Butch's statement is either really pushing the definition of contend, or watering down the definition of champion. I don't think it's unfair to question the statement. Especially following a season where Tennessee was picked to win the division and possibly LITERALLY contend for the championship, but went 8-4 and didn't even win their state.

Hell, given the injuries, and everything that happened, I don't think 8-4 is unforgivable. I do think that calling yourself a championship contender is questionable.

I am appreciative that Butch isn't Dooley. But not being Dooley doesn't make you a championship contender.

You can get a bowl invite with a 6-6(2-6) record; lessens it somewhat as a measure of achievement.

agreed. but for a program that went 5-7 three years in a row, going to a bowl 4 years ago, was the right direction.

what it can't be is an ongoing standard level of achievement.

BigSteve, you lost that argument 2 pages back. This thread shifted to the Universal "can Butch win at UT" debate about 18 hours ago. Please do keep up, sir. :)

Do you think Tennessee has competed for championships in the Jones Era?

When you make up your own Championship, then sure.

No Tennessee has not contended for an actual Championship. Tennessee has not finished better than .500 in their conference. Its the definition of average. We have not contended for a Championship on any level. If you take away the hype and gimme games, we are an average team.

You mean hasn't finished better than .625 in conference. If you mean during the Butch years, of course.

We went 5-3 (SEC) season before last.

Just clarifying the facts with you.

Your words, not mine.

Did I draw the wrong conclusion of what you meant when you posted non CFP bowls are ultimately meaningless? That was in the post I quoted from you.

Sorry I left out the other two but I was trying to clarify your point.

As a fan of the Vols every game matters to me. Even after our SECe, SEC, and NC aspersions are gone. Win for the thrill of victory.

Amen, brother Iam4, amen. Win any game you can, even if it has absolutely zero impact on anything else. Care about them all, never give up, never give quarter. Go Vols!

I said non-CFP bowl wins were meaningless. Last time I checked regular season OOC, conference games, and conference championship games, are not bowls.

So I'm still confused as to point of your original statement.:ermm:

You discounted our bowl wins by saying 2/3 get a bowl invite.

So if a bowl game is meaningless because it's not part of the CFP, then it stands to reason once a team is not in the hunt any games left are meaningless as well.

What did you mean by meaningless?
