Who thinks Canales is a "C" hire now?

it is way too early to place a grade on this coach. He would have better background if he had some SEC experience and success in the SEC. I have yet to see him coach an SEC QB to success or failure to give him any grade. And no, getting a high school commitment doesn't get him a grade either. Let the kid first sign and then perform before giving credit to a coach.. JMO

For real

Look, its not about Canales. The anti crowd just hate him because Butch hired him. Just fill in the blank and it will be hated by many because they just hate Butch.

We'll see how this whole staff works out, but just looking, it looks to me that Butch is delivering up on his best coaching staff in America promise he gave in the beginning.

Like I said, we'll see, but Shoop, Hoke, Canales and the others look like a pretty solid team to me.

I realize its way too early/not enough data to support a conclusion but Dormadys passing in the spring game gave me hope. Both in him and Canales, Dormady imo looked like a razor but at the same time relaxed.

He looked cold blooded and I'm for it

That's BS. Last year people were thrilled and loved the Shoop hire, I was at the top of that list. Pretty sure Jones hired him. Thinking everybody has been very happy with the Charlton Warren hiring this year as well....who hired him? Was it not Butch Jones? Same goes for Brady Hoke.

The concern with the Canales hire was his poor resume. Had he been a top notch, well thought of qb coach, like Shoop was a well thought of, top notch DC before last year, everybody would've been thrilled with the hire.

Instead, people were disappointed and questioning it because Canales came to us from Utah State, as their running backs coach, preceded by 6 years of not much of anything at North Texas State. It's pretty clear why Canales was brought in, and there's nothing to suggest it's because he was the best qb coach going.

All that said, Canales can change some minds and redeem/validate his hiring if our qbs play very well this year and he continues to he valuable on the recruiting trail. Helping land Martinez is a big step in the right direction.

What game has been played since he was hired where we can actually judge his work? I must have missed it.

Agreed, if you start giving him A's for recruiting the #3 QB then CBJ must be summa cum laude for his recruiting. I don't see anyone talking like that.

It's fairly simple for me...rarely do I base my opinions on what Volnation posters think. THEY are the ones (generally speaking of course) who have garnered a failing mark over the past several years. All over the board with opinions on players/coaches with no logical football understanding at all... JMO of course.

Which VN posters? They are wide and varied in opinion.

Understand that vein of thinking, but confused by those pushing for completely unproven Chris Weinke.

No real way to judge his coaching yet. But I highly doubt most thought he could come in and land a QB as highly rated as Martinez with the concerns about his recruiting ability in a conference like the SEC.

How does he get credit for it? This staff has landed alot of good qbs, without him. I guess its because there is is nothing to tall about but its always funny to watch us make the same mistake over and over. Upgrading folks "grades" and anointing them great or even good before their first snap. We do it over and over and never learn.

Having a dedicated QB coach as opposed to a GA isn't exactly rocket science.
Recruiting pundits have stated that the Canales hire has definitely paid dividends as he has really embraced the role and is working like heck

Kudos for Canales on getting Martinez. I have high expectations for QD based on what I've seen since he got here, Canales doesn't get credit for him. Let's slow the roll a bit and see what happens once the lights turn on in September.

I agree. Like I said, not a lot to go on. But based on the very limited information we have, he appears to be solid so far. Obviously that's subject to change.

He does have to sign and is a long time between now and February but I think you can be graded for recruiting at a high level.

So volnation posters are the reason all the major sports at UT are mediocre? Not sure how that works but okay.

we (vol faithful) always read too much into everything looking for hope or strings to tug on. This dead period is maddening, but YouTube is always showing some good games. UT @ SCjr come back win anyone?

Being able to recruit talented athletes is the first part. Coaching them "up" is second part and probably hardest part. So far, I approve of Our QB coach. We have needed one for a while.
