If Litaker, Martinez and Harris all pop in the next month our class has potential to be the best one CBJ has had yet.
It'll be hard to beat the 2015 class. That was by far the best one they signed on paper IMO. But it would certainly be an outstanding start to add those three to the fold. I just don't see us in with a lot of elite guys out of state to make it a Top 5 type class.
I honestly think if we clean up in-state and at least have another 9-4 year, then there is no reason to think we won't finish strong down the stretch. The national narrative is already one of a "rebuilding year" for us.
The core group of in-state guys are good. Other kids will see that.

I agree, but it's tough to expect a coach that's been here for 4 years and hasn't won anything of major significance to sign a top 5 class, especially considering his in-state recruiting is TN, which has only become relevant talent-wise on a national stage in the last couple of years yet still produces far less top talent than other southeastern states. Results need to be there before I, personally, start demanding to be in the top 5 class discussion.
Looking at the top 50 recruits of the top247 for 2018, I believe I counted 24 of the 50 are from southeastern states, which is UT's primary recruiting ground. Majority of those are coming from GA and FL. Unless the results come, it will always be tough to attract those kids, especially with the success of teams in those states that are not in the SEC, most notably, FSU and Clemson.
All that to say I do agree with your point. I think the 2015 class is the standard thus far. I just don't know if it's reasonable for UT fans to expect a top 5 class in 2018 or even 2019 (since more and more kids are committing early and with the new signing period rules) unless we make a big statement on the field.
Seems like this staff has better connections in Florida which is fine. So much talent in that state. Warren is the one with Georgia (specifically ATL) connections but it's going to take time and us having success before he starts making a big impact there.Yeah, I'm not expecting a Top 5 class by any means. I was responding to someone who said this could be his best class to date. I don't think it will be, the 2015 class was really really good.
I'd put the talent the state of TN produces now, only behind GA and FL. I think they've surpassed all the other southern states, which is a good thing long-term for Tennessee.
Historically, Tennessee has always recruited Georgia extremely well. Even Butch recruited it well his first several years, but last year was awful and this year appears to likely be pretty bad as well. I don't know what happened there but we aren't really in play with any of the top guys anymore. Even South Carolina pulled 3-4 4* kids out of there last year, a few we tried to go after so its not like they are all going to Clemson or Auburn. It's really baffling what has happened to us in that state.

Glad it isnt working for them this year. Maybe everyone is seeing through the Kirby bull. He'll be fired in a couple years imo
It's the exact same thing that happened to Butch, flavor of the week got a couple of great recruiting classes. Then it became wait and see results on the field. Smart needs to do well this year to continue his success recruiting.
As everyone has learned countless number of times, but seems to keep forgetting, nothing is assured in recruiting.

I would rather have the best players.

In the long run, I think the Georgia players are the better players. I want the best players for the Vols. I don't want the "I will transfer if I am not the top player " mentality recruits.
I think that this staff is working very hard to avoid those types. They have been burned by a couple (ie hurd and pwilliams).
