Candid Article on Blackburn

I think davenport had to assert herself by not hiring the clear-cut favorite and quite possibly most qualified/energetic AD. Especially after local businesses started promoting Blackburn.

The only thing Davenport asserted was the wish/order of Big Jim Haslam.

We dodged a bullet not hiring him if he wasn't professional enough to do his job because he was worried about the next one. Bad admission on his part admitting being unprofessional.

One of the funnier things I've read.

Solid.

I wouldnt know if an AD would be a good hire or not. Not sure how as fans we know the inner workings of an athletic department.

Because there are major porblems/concerns with the UT Administration that are effecting the football program and there is an evident lack of accountability.

I talked to Gov. Haslam and he said because of your post in this thread on this forum that he would fix things. If you could just put your contact information in the men's room at the park on the corner of Oakridge Turnpike and Melton Hill Lake Dr. he would get right on it.

I agree and that is just what he admitted to in this article.

Seriously in this article Blackburn is admitting that he got caught up in pursuit of another job - so much that he's not sure he was doing a good job where he was at.

Now he is trying to say UTC is great and that he should have appreciated what he had rather than getting caught up in the noise around the AD job at Tennessee.

There is no hidden story here - just someone looking back and realizing that he didn't handle the situation well.

Couldn't disagree more.

So Blackburn had an epiphany, and realized that he really wanted to stay in Chattanooga anyway? I love the media.

Yeah, after it became clear that the decision makers at his dream job had no intention whatsoever of giving him an honest shot at the opportunity. I'd say that's when he reflected and realized he has it good at UTC.

You don't see it as unprofessional that he admits to not doing his job properly because his mind was elsewhere?

Nope. I read that as being honest, being human. I've been in situations where I was interviewing for other jobs (on an infinitely smaller scale than what Blackburn just went through) while still performing in my current position....it's a difficult thing to do and is distracting to say the least.

He discussed having a ton of things on his plate and not handling the clutter as well as he'd have like to. Yet, he was still making really good decisions with his hires/replacing very good coaches who were moving onto better jobs after having great success under David.

So no, I'm not overthinking this. The guy was honest and upfront about the experience that took a bit of an emotional toll on him, which was 100% understandable imo.

And as far as being "unprofessional"....we just hired a guy to be our AD with a long history of being terribly unprofessional. Blackburn was and is still clearly the best guy for the job imo. Too bad he'll never get the opportunity

You didn't ask me and KB will probably answer it better, but I Was about to comment anyway.

I think he's human and was honest about it. I also don't think he was so "unprofessional" that its really an issue.

Jmo.

I took too long. Haha. But was right, KB did it better.

I agree it shows a human side for sure. I just think it's unprofessional and an admission he should have never made. In fact I think he made a number of unprofessional decisions during the process. His tweet was very poor judgement.

I respect what you guys are saying even though I think it's something you owe to your current employer not to admit publically. It makes them look insignificant

I can kinda agree with that, although both positions are in the same system....and Chattanooga surely understands they're a distant second in the pecking order behind Knoxville. And given the success they've enjoyed under David, they're likely thrilled he's still there and not offended by his implying what everybody knows and understands..... that Knoxville is the better, more prestigious job.

I guess if UTC feels the same he'll find out. Me? I don't have a problem with it and I'd still rather have him. But, as I've said all along, that's just me. We have Currie and I'll support him until I don't. Haha.

I might feel like Bruin if DB had let UTC down (from their viewpoint) during the process. I've not seen or read anything to indicate that's the case. The only thing DB's comments reflect are his own opinion of how he handled things.
