Josh Dobbs - NFL Draft thread (merged)

If you look at the guards, you can figure out what kind of blocking scheme will be utilized. I love watching a great guard do his thing. If guards get push, it's a good run. Zack Martin is the best I've seen in a long time, since the days of Hutchinson and Shields.

In terms of alignment, the biggest tip off is splits. Passing teams will have wider splits than running teams. The second biggest tip off is if the guard looks around in stance.
I have noticed leg placement too... you can get a very good zone block if your leg is extended way back..

Do you know what to look for when your looking at QB's

I know what I look for personally, being right or wrong is the debate. First thing is if a QB looks down field when being pressured and can make reads in a quick time. Dormady is great about that. I would then look to see how his pocket awareness is. Then it comes down to accuracy. Are they mechanical or are they just natural?

Pretty glowing remarks from a guy who has covered the NFL since 1960. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...-day-results-tennessee-texas-tech-wvu-indiana

Tennessee held its pro day on Friday, and it was the school's unheralded quarterback who stole the show.

Joshua Dobbs (6-3 1/4, 218), who stood on all of his numbers from the combine, was his own quarterback guru, scripting his own plays for the workout portion of the pro day. He started with four go-routes, and dropped each into the bucket. He ended with four go-routes and threw perfect passes about 50 yards down the field.

In all, he had just one poor throw with a couple of drops. It was a performance that left Steelers coach Mike Tomlin asking, "Who is this guy?" He really opened some eyes.

Dobbs draft buzz is really taking off lately. He's featured on SI.com right now. Todd McShay mentioned him on First Take. He's no longer that under the radar 6th round prospect anymore. Very strong chance he goes in day 2 now.

I think he goes in round 5ish or so. He'll get some good coaching and probably stay in the league for a few years. With the lack of good QB's in the NFL right now (and it's down right pitiful) I think there is a great chance for him to even be a starter for a while for someone.

You guys are nuts. Whether or not he's a future HOF QB is debatable. Him bringing his draft stock up to the 2cd or 3rd round is not.

I have been as critical as anyone of JD's passing abilities, however, it does seem that he is generating some buzz right now and that only bodes well for UT. I hope he goes into the league and tears it up, but, if I was drafting him, he would be about my 8th choice.

I personally see a Tebow like career for JD.

I can understand you wanting to temper your expectations but putting him in the same class as Tebow as far as throwing the football is laughable. He improved every year and made big strides his senior year.

Tebow was way more prolific throwing the ball in college than Dobbs was. I think Dobbs will likely pan out better in the NFL, but it's not exactly a foregone conclusion.

I'm hoping he becomes either Dak or Mariota's back-up

NFL is desperate for starting QBs, especially with Romo's retirement! Big Ben was a sliver away from retirement this off-season too.

I could see him going as high as Cleveland taking him in the second round to an early 4th round pick.

You will list all 32 NFL teams and somehow still be wrong about where Dobbs ends up.

I've never claimed to know what team will draft him. I've only claimed to know that he will be GREAT wherever he goes. If I had my choice, I would prefer he lands in:

1. Pittsburgh - consistent franchise with a good roster and great head coach......early playing time possible because the starting QB is aging and injury prone....could be an ideal landing spot to have a Dak Prescott style rookie season

2. Houston - a roster that is ready made to win right now....no other QB ahead of him....immediate playing time on a team that could win a super bowl.....could be a Russell Wilson in Seattle type of situation

3. San Francisco - rebuilding franchise with championship pedigree....no legit QB ahead on the roster so immediate playing time is available....offensive genius for a head coach that has worked magic with almost every QB he's coached.....west coast offense also suits Dobbs skill set

4. Cleveland - immediate playing time available....good rapport with Hue Jackson from the Senior Bowl....low expectations since the Browns have been bad for so long

I too am high on Dobbs heading into the draft. He's got a lot of the qualities you look for in an NFL qb. Preseason will be fun to watch.

You got me to thinkin' so I looked it up. Yeah, Tim had pretty big #s for a DT QB.

Career Tebow Dobbs
Comp 661 614
Att 995 999
% 66.4 61.5
TotYd 9285 7138
Avg 9.3 7.1
TD 88 53
Int 16 29
PER 170.8 133.2

But, then I looked at the Sr years only, and the #s crunch a lot ... trend for Dobbs looks good at the right time.

Sr Season - Tebow Dobbs
Games 14 13
Comp 213 225
Att 314 357
% 67.8 63
Yds 2895 2946
YPA 9.2 8.3
TD 21 27
Int 5 12
PER 164.2 150.6

So, from a trend perspective you could say that Dobbs has closed the gap on the Heisman winner in comparable senior seasons. Nobody doubts that TT entered college more prepared than Dobbs. But, Dobbs closed the gap pretty nicely from a statistical perspective. With Tebow's So->Sr numbers, it's hard to see much upside. But with Dobbs, it jumps out at you from So->Sr season (something everyone on VN already knew).

This is only stats of course. Tons of other details factor in to their performance. But both players are looked at with different but very high intangibles at the position.

If scouts are looking for potential upside, then watch out here.

Why does D4H keep harping about Dobbs and these NFL talent evaluators? He has trashed Dobbs, said he was garbage. He has also said these NFL guys dont know what they are talking about.

D4H, why do you keep up this charade?

If you go back and look at what Dobbs did when he had time to throw the ball, you'll have a different opinion. When he got to plant his feet, he was a different qb. If he would have had solid line play all year, he would have had better numbers.

There's no guarantee that he'll get good line play in the league.
