It has. I'd never realized how badly it's declined. If you go by career resume alone, I guess it's Bielema? Mcelwain or Gus probably the 2nd as far as success within the SEC. Just crazy how many inexperienced and unproven coaches this league has all of a sudden.

Gus is the only other one to play in a national championship game.

That's a good point, but Bielema had pretty sustained success at Wisconsin if you look at total resume. And Gus had that horrific season to balance out the spectacular one. It's just crazy that there are no clear cut, P5-proven, experienced coaches in the conference outside Saban and arguably Bielema.

Not the OP, who is a day late with his joke, but It was discovered that UNC was committing academic fraud by having classes that don't exist and the basketball programs were the benefactors in these fake classes.

Yeah, I know about that. And yet they still haven't been sanctioned by the NCAA about it. Doesn't surprise me that the basketball student-athletes are now going to (at least) some real classes now.

Yea, I agree.

Wisconsin was not in the SEC. He doesn't look as successful now that he is coaching in the SEC. Who has the better overall record in the SEC… Butch or Bielema?

I think there are multiple coaches that you can make a case for… Gus, Mullen, Butch, Freeze, and Bielema.

This.

Butch's record against the B10 disproves any support for Bielema IMO. Butch has been beating them soundly with good, not elite, teams every bowl game.

I wasn't making a micro observation on a few years of Butch and Bielema; but on that point, if Butch was coaching in the West, I think he'd probably have a MUCH worse record than Bielema so far. Not that I think Bielema is an amazing coach, but comparing their records since joining the SEC isn't even an attempt at making a fair comparison considering how horrific the East has been and how the West has been the best division in all of football until (arguably) this past year.

Mullen would be up there IMO. He's the QB whisperer while accomplishing more with less. Mahlzahn is an enigma. To be determined with him to see if he can sustain success. Same with Butch. Has yet to overachieve, but, his coaching hires this offseason are very encouraging. Freeze is out. Achieved by cheating and his system is high schoolish on O.

We are all point out the same thing actually. Coaching matters. Our opinions may be different about the individual coaches, but overall, football in the west has dominated due to better coaching and recruiting. In basketball the east is dominating due to overall better coaching and recruiting.

Conclusion: hire the best coaches available and give them the tools they need to be successful. Same as any other business.

Basketball seems to be taking that route. So much proven success in basketball now.

It's crazy how UF UGA UT AU USC UK LSU Vandy Mizzou Ole Miss MSU all hired football coaches that hadn't really proven anything in P5 football, despite having more money than just about everyone.

The "clear cut, proven coaches" got fired.

Everyone is amazed that the UNC bb player that shot the buzzer beater against Kentucky showed up to his 8am class the next day... I'm just amazed he had a class to go to in the first place

I see you painting with that broad brush

Explain to me again, please, how this fake class did not benefit student (ahem) - athletes? Irrespective of the fact that non-athletes were taking the class also, academic fraud is academic fraud. That impacts player eligibility, and that should be worthy of penalties that they will likely never see because the NCAA is a joke.

There are some people like Saban who will be successful almost no matter who his assistants are. Then there are guys like Dabo who have to hire a great staff in order to be successful. Butch is one of those guys, but he has a great staff now imo.
