Ok I am taking QD side for this reasoning.

JG had always been injury prone and he looks frail to me. QD looks like a freaking beast physically and I don't think there is much separation in what they offer. I want to see the guy that can stay on the field win the job.

Smith's move to LB lines up with Shoop using more 4-3 this year. We had to use a 5th DB last year in Gaulden because of the weakness at LB. This year if healthy we should have a very good core group at LB. Sapp should shine.

How do we know he wouldn't have developed?

Besides we could say that about a bunch of those guys that played last year and he played ahead of them as a freshmen.

"Bunch of" em? So McDowell? The rest with any snaps weren't on the roster. Jakob had very good athletic ability and zero instincts at linebacker imo. Have to go with the coaches on this one.

Always been a fan of Smith. Hope he can contribute this year.

Dormady is a tank out there. Bigger than I remember.

I can't imagine him seeing the field at TE either. Line him up on ST and tell him to hit someone.

No. That's absurd actually.
Just pointing out that it's ridiculous to assume that someone not as fast, 'like Manning wasn't', can't be the better QB.
That and I refuse to "assume" that JG can already run the offense just as well. You're just making that up because it's what you want to be the case.

I asked a simple, generic question. Let me rephrase it, If it were the case that they knew the offense equally, wouldn't Dormady have to be much better than JG as a passer to win the job since JG is the much better athlete? If Dormady is only slightly better, wouldn't the edge still go to JG since he has the other intangibles? That is the question I was asking, had nothing to do with what I want to happen, tho I do hope that JG wins the job

Get it out of your system because football starts at 4 PM and if you discuss womens bball in a football thread once football has commenced you curse us and nobody wants that especially after the Davey curse has just now dissipated.

I drove by the practice field on my way home from work. It was great seeing our guys out there.

That might be the explanation but that would be a real shame for a kid that was in the starting lineup as a true freshmen.

I imagine the reason he worked out with LB is that they want him to play a slightly hybrid role. Shoop wants to run some more 4-3, so Smith could fit into that third role.

Okay, that's fair.
It's unlikely they would be even in all other facets but if they were, I agree the best athlete has a greater upside.

I'm just over the "Butch is gonna screw this up" hypothesis that I keep seeing from other posters. We may very well end up with Dormady to start or even for this season. But instead of just assuming Jones is rewarding seniority, I'm open to the possibility that JG just hasn't fully mastered the entire game YET.

That's easy.

2016- loaded at DE and no opportunity to play so Smith moves there which appeared to be to have one year to be ready to help the following year. Oh and LB depth Sucked

2017- Lb is experienced with help arriving and DE is a very iffy position without Much depth and Smith moves back to LB.

He seems to be at the position he is needed the least that's why it's a fiasco

I always thought Smith was being groomed to be used like Curt Maggitt. He will play some LB in early downs and rush the passer late. Has this news really changed that?

It would appear to me that if Jakob Johnson had been left alone at LB we might have won an extra game last year. It's certainly reasonable to think he could have helped at LB last season.

Not reasonable at all and definitely no evidence to support the statement that we would have won one more game. That one seemed to emerge directly from your rectum.
