i know its not going to happen but am i the only one who would love to see evan berry given a shot to play corner? i feel like his size and speed would translate well at corner and we know hes got good football instincs, with TK, abernathy, gaulden, warrior, griffen all capable safeties why not give it a shot

Kelly, Warrior, and Berry (if healthy) gives you a luxury at S. The Will in Shoop's system is a hybrid but needs to be more of a LB imo than any of UT's current S's... and probably more of a S than any of UT's current LB's. Development at that position will be a key thing to watch as we hope for a big step forward. El. Berry was probably the closest to physically matching the position.

That almost sounds like something that would suit Dillon Bates really well

I have a question for all the defensive guru's we have on volnation. We run a 4-2 the majority of the time. I know TkJr has one safety spot locked down but in order to get the best on the field is there any way when we do go to a 4-3 that we could move TkJr to the other olb position? He is a good tackler and could cover the tight end or fullback in case of play action. Then we have Warrior and Berry or who ever else we have playing the other safety. Would something like that work?

my opinion is they need to find a way to get kelly warrior gaulden and berry all on the field at the same time

Give the players a fresh start with the new coaches. They had no option but to use the technique Martinez taught. With any coach Martinez included it is his way or the bench. I am guessing it will take them all of a week to improve.

I think both Martin and Mosely will improve a lot with Coach Warren. I look for Labruzza, Buchanon and Osborne to get a lot of snaps as backups.

If at all possible, I think Coach Warren will keep Gaulden at NB just for continuity.

I do think that Gaulden can step up his game,he may not just be a nickel back

Thought Buchanan was going to be the next great CB.

Some people said that.

I wasn't one of them.

Bailey and LaBruzza are much better players.

Martin doesn't have what it takes mentally.

Moseley is willing and physical, but is badly coached. He had better technique as a raw freshman. If coach Warren is legit, Moseley will be a rock at CB.

I really hope we bulk up kelly and play him at OLB, i dont think he has the pure speed to be at safety in the SEC. Let warrior and Berry battle ot out for his spot and let him be the best coverage lb on the team.

In our defense he plays close enough to the line of scrimmage anyway.

He just takes bad angles. Him and Abernathy are not overly physical.
But Kelly is our most consistent defender...

Warrior and Byrd at safety is what should be pushed. Warrior will be a star IF he gets the scheme and concepts of our d. Byrd is a playmaker...

Evan Berry was coming along nicely and then got injured.

Byrd is going to stay on offense and be a star...I fully expect him to explode next year...

If we are going to go away from running nickel all the time and focus more on the 4-3 with a hybrid LB/S as the 3rd LB then I could see this as the lineup:

L: Bituli-Ignont
L: Kirkland-McDowell
L: Kelly-Bates
C: Osborne-Moseley
C: Martin-Buchanan
S: Warrior-Abernathy
S: Gaulden-Griffin

If all of these players are healthy and understand the defense then I could see this being a really good D

Byrd will move to CB and redefine the position. Other corners will benefit.

Sapp would play before Kelly there.
Jumper before Bates

LB McDowell/ Bituli
MLb DKJ/ Jumper
STAR Sapp/Reid

CB Moseley
CB Bailey

SS Gaulden
FS Kelly

I would have Sapp in there but I just worry about his knee...assuming he's healthy then absolutely have him there and Kelly back to the secondary

As far as his backup...I hope Reid is the real deal but I've seen a lot of undersized freshmen come in with hype and just not be physically ready to live up to it...on the other hand you have Bates whose biggest knock has always been that he's a tweener...seems like star is a perfect spot for someone like him

I actually agree about Kelly playing a 3rd backer spot. But Sapp or even Reid would be there and both are better at that spot

Kelly is a playmaker.
Hard to see us him getting took off the field...

Warrior and Darrell Taylor need to own the Spring and Summer.

There speed at their positions can change our defense.

A tweener of OLB and MLB.
Unfortunately not physical enough for either.
Great athlete who struggles with scheme and physicalality.

He does have safety speed, but injuries have greatly slowed his progress.

Reid is probably the best OLB prospect we've signed since JRM.

Watch his film. Even at 6'1" 205 he's ready to contribute. He's solid with room to add muscle stilk. Fast and absolutely finds his target...

We need to move to more 4- 3..

Guys like Bituli, Sapp, Reid need to see the field.

You've got me excited about Reid...I seem to remember an article where he acknowledges needing to add weight...being an EE is huge for him...with that attitude I could see him getting to 220 which is plenty for the Star

Idk if it's just me but I thought Gaulden looked good as our NB. He was a excellent tackler and always seemed to be right on his man and made some nice breakups if I recall correctly.

If our starting cb are Moseley and Martin for a majority of the season next year, we are in TROUBLE again

With better coaching and experience they can do fine. They both have the potential.

Both are NFL corners based on their measureables. Lets just hope they can put it together as seniors.

Byrd will be a starting DB for 2017.

Butch and Shoop wanted to wait until they had a real DB Coach in play.

Martinez was a bad DB Coach and would've ruined Byrd.

Insider info...

Martin and Moseley will start.

Labruzza and Buchanan will back them up.

Gaulden starts at nickel. Osborne backs him up.

Byrd stays at WR.

Let's hope that Warren fixes that mess. I do think they both have potential both have shown flashes but that all they shown

Unless Depth, quality depth, shows up on the D Line and LBs stay healthy, Darrelle Revis and Ray Sherman would look like chumps,, cant cover for 5+ seconds.. When Tuttle, Obrien, Mckenzie, and others went down, South Carolina and Vandy ate our corners up, it really wasn't their fault...

Nobody was getting 5 seconds last year with Barnett and Vereen on the edges, and we still got consistently abused at CB due to ungodly poor technique. You're certainly right about nobody being able to cover a WR for 5 seconds, but that wasn't the issue last year imo.

IT HAS TO STOP..PLEASE

Byrd is playing slot not DB ( I understand there was talk at the beginning of last year which side of the ball he'd play)

Jennings will never move to safety so stop.. just stop... it doesn't even make sense.. he our no.1 receiver

Todd Kelly playing LB.. stop. I understand wanting to bring him down and add Nigel in the back end but yall are going about it all wrong.. we run a 4-2 defense with a nickel.. so in order for this to work he wouldnt move to LB... he'd have to take gauldens spot at nickel and play down in the box/ off the edge more exclusively... this is how it would happen if it ever got there. ( technically the same in essence but Kelly becomes more of a Mark Barron hybrid type player) IMO it doesn't happen and honestly doesn't need to. Our defense takes great strides this offseason to dramatically improve on the field next year
