I know there are some great prospects in the 2017 class. I wonder if they will be properly developed.

Are you happy with the class?

Was hoping Butch would have signed a lot more talent to make up for the coaching/development deficiencies that have plagued the program over the last four years.

Since they aren't the "Best Staff in America" I believe recruiting top talent must be at a premium to off-set the lack of talent on staff...........

No

This is the Butch Jones we see on the field showing up in recruiting. He didn't have the legacies to back fill with and actually had to work.

I'm happy but not ecstatic. Only time will tell as it usually does. Poll didn't show til after I posted so picked #3.

Acceptable for the standard UT is at now, and has been going on a decade.

However, UT will not be breaking through that crimson glass ceiling anytime soon.

Kind of a wash for me. Happy, not happy. Didn't lose any big verbals to anyone else, but didn't flip any top talent.

The latter was discouraging for me because it leaves the impression that the excitement about where UT is headed is either flat-lined and topped out or on the decline.

Neither is encouraging

Obviously time will tell with this class, but after an up and down year with all the hype, I think we will be pleased with this class by the time most of them are through their time of matriculation. We finished with a class that was ranked higher than the football team at the end of the year and recognizing the severe impact that injuries had on our team, I think this class will go a long way towards providing the depth needed for the future. All of us would have liked more 4 and 5 star players, but I think many of our 3 stars are relatively high 3 star players and I like the thought of having some of them still here and starting as redshirt juniors and seniors.

Between mixed and content (cause I'm complicated like that.)
Mixed describes the overall feel.

After certain losses and public drama around the program, I thought it would cost us some higher ranked players.
But as far as solid 3*s very content with many.
Several have scores right on the 4 star line. Just funny if those are given .02 point raise, they're 4 stars and everyone likes them.

Someone on the radio said it perfect.

On signing day this is a "C" class. Now it's this staff's responsibility to make sure they elevate it to a "B" class and not let it fall to a "D" class.

I voted #3 for a couple reasons. A lot of so called experts on recruiting will say the difference between a 10th ranked class and a 20th ranked class is small. However, a top 5 class is materially better than a 10-20 class, especially if teams are having those respective classes for 3 years or longer. I disagree with those who say this UT class gives the impression that the program has peaked under the current regime. I think future recruits have short memories about a team's past recruiting ranking. It's my opinion that they look at a team's won loss record for the current season and the hype/criticism coming out of the media. If Tennessee overachieves in 2017 (10 wins and a trip to the SEC Championship game), they'll be back in the top 5-10 in recruiting. If they dont....

I'm not gonna put down any of the kids we signed, they give their all and wanted the scholarship. I would hope none take offense though when people question the class given there were higher ranked prospects with Smith being an exception. From an outsiders perspective, it's not a very impressive class on paper. We need elite (at least top 5) for 3-4 years in a row if we want a chance at a dynasty.

Ok, own up, who are the three people who voted "Happy, very excited. Will take UT to next level." for a composite 17th ranked class that's ~7th in the conference?

Every position we signed good depth or a difference maker.

At WR. We missed on Higgins and passed on Payton. Those two were some of the more explosive WRs. Tennessee has had in years.
But we signed 3 really good playmakers. All of them can play all wr positions.

RB- good
OL- pretty good
DL- pretty good
LB- good
DBs- good
SP- okay

The problem is development. In the past 4 years we've seen serious issues in developing players at OL, WR, QB, DB, and DL. With Martinez out and Warren in, there's some hope for DBs, but not much for the rest with Mahoney, Azzani, Stripling, and now Canales on staff.

Stripling? Pretty sure the issue with the DL wasn't coaching. Why not a shot at Thig since the lb's struggled too? There's also at least one more likely to leave

I really don't get the slams on Strip....the DL has been a strength until this year, and with the sheer number of injuries....something had to give....and it did.

You can't expect to be in the 3rd / 4th deep...or even out of guys period and have the same level of production in the interior.

There will be some good players come from this class. I think the "we signed a lot of "depth" is highly questionable from the standpoint of quality. We may have added #s to positions that were needed but "depth" and "quality depth" are 2 different things.

I see this class having holes that will need to be filled with quality in 17' and 18'.
