Recruiting Forum Football Talk XXXII

If you're having an "off" recruiting year, it seems to me you should keep a few of the scholarships in your pocket for the following year. Instead, they blueshirted at least one kid (maybe more) which means you not only used up all your scholarships this year, you gave away a scholarship or two next year to 5.5 and 5.6 guys. Doesn't make sense to me.

Maybe I'm just missing something. Can anybody explain their rationale?

I'm not really sure how to reply to this.

My intent was to point out the hypocrisy in some pharmaceutical companies making lots of money off of getting people dependent on their products while marijuana is still illegal.

I never meant to sound judgmental towards those who are in need of pharmaceuticals to lead a life worth living.
Oh I misunderstood what you said then. I've become a very big advocate for people with legitimate needs. They shouldn't be punished and shamed by society, because of the abuses of others.

Yea, I kind of agree. I would have signed a smaller class and kept a couple in my back pocket for the class. Butch is getting paid the big bucks for making these decisions. He'll live or die based on what he thinks he needs to do.

Read a couple articles saying Peterman could go as high as 2nd round. Did any of us think he'd have a shot at the NFL after that UF game?

I thought he was a great pickup when we signed him. I could never understand the total collapse. I guess some just can't handle extreme pressure. I'm glad he could go to a place where the pressure to perform was next to nothing.

Not true. With the legalization state and the medical marijuana states, research is now revealing a multitude of medical issues causes by increased marijuana use. There is no substance that is without potential harmful consequences.

:hi:

Absolutely. Every vice has its fallback. Multiple medical issues can come with smoking cigarettes, weed, pipe tobacco... anything. I meant it was safer as in how its near impossible to overdose on like pills and less likely to cause you to do something drastic like alcohol can if you're intoxicated. It's safer than both of those yet it's illegal and those two are legal.

On a separate note: it feels good to have this forum back. There was very little intelligent conversations yesterday with all the FF crazies.

Listen I don't want to post this in Trey Knox thread because I don't want people to start trashing him.

He makes fun of the Vols all the time. Huge Gator fan. Gives kids grief at school for UT gear.

Now watch the kid come here.

Did Stevens act similarly?

It would be nice to be able to password protect this place but I'm afraid I might not get the password.

There has been a soft gentle breeze in the RF this morn.

The class fit needs - it is not good or bad. It's unknown. It cannot be denied (legitimately) that is not to the standard Butch has set in the past.

However, with the following moves the D improves for multiple years allowing plenty of time to develop the roster. Focus on the D. The O is going to be fine. All of the needs are met there.

Byrd to CB - that's moving a 3* performing slot to his natural high 4* position with 2-3 seasons left of playing time.
Abernathy to Nickel or CB - that's moving a 3* performing safety to his natural position with a couple years left of playing time.
Gaulden to S - that's moving a 3* type nickel to his natural 4* position wth 2-3 years of playing time remaining.
Kelly to LB - that's moving a 3-4* type S to a more productive position that can cover TE's and RB's out of the backfield while being a good tackler on the edge on running plays. Only good for one season, but provides time to develop his replacement for 2018.

With those moves and building depth in the D-line a major rebound in the unit's performance can occur in 2017.

Only about 5% of prescription pain Rx are being given to drug abusers...yet the other 95% of legitimate patients are being ostracized by all this.

A bigger problem in my opinion are the people that are lying to the physicians in order to get the narcotics for the purpose of then selling them.

Exactly..Man I see folks living in total misery because of the stigma society has placed on prescription pain relievers. Vote happy, reactionary politicians are not helping the situation at all.

Refreshing to check this thread this morning and see FF didn't succeed in burning down the RF. I'm just excited to get back to the correctly-formatted individual recruit threads, and start Football Talk XXXIII soon for Spring Practice. FF did all it could to create 17 threads on the same topic, but we survived. We did it.

Sometimes I think we are elitists for trashing the FF, but then days like yesterday happen and totally throw that thought out the window.

People like to say the RF is all sunshine pumpers, but that's ridiculous considering Catbone and Bruin are regular posters here.

The difference in my view is that we have (mostly) civil discussion. Debating those FFer's is like debating a 2 year old.

What's beyond nauseating is the back patting about "not accepting mediocrity" and their superior "standards". Way too much Dooley references and how he'd "still be here if we hadn't complained". :puke5: What self-deluded alternate universe do these mensas dream this crap?

You've achieved the impossible. I agree with all this.

“It doesn’t have the same sex appeal as some of Butch Jones’ earlier classes, but I think there’s a lot of reasons to think this can be a really successful one, because they’ve got guys that I think can play from Day One, like Ty Chandler and Trey Smith,” Simmons said.

“But they’ve also got a lot of guys that are really good upside guys. They’ve got kids that aren’t necessarily college-ready right now that have a chance to be NFL players. And I think, with the depth of the class, with the way they were able to hit some real areas of need, I think this is a class that’s successful.

“It’s a class that keeps Tennessee where it needs to be to compete in the East.”

Simmons pointed out that Tennessee finished at No. 11 in the team rankings based solely on ratings from 247Sports’ analysts. And he said it “probably” will end up “being a better class even than it ranked.”

“We’ve got them ranked 11th if you just use our rankings, so I think that tells you how we feel about them relative to the rest of the industry,” he said.

“It’s hard to spin this as a disappointing class unless you’re just comparing it truly with the Alabamas, the Florida States. And I know Tennessee wants to be there, but it’s still, I think, a process, and I think this is not a step back in the incremental growth that we’re seeing in the program.”

My only comments about the 17 class

1. Disappointed in missing some big names, especially in state
2. Disappointed in lack of "star power"
3. However, when I look through the names, I really like a lot of what I see.

I'm just hoping this isn't me rationalizing in a Dooley like scenario

Simmons said Tennessee’s incoming group of linebackers — which consists of Top247 prospects Will Ignont of New Market, Ala., and Shanon Reid of Fort Myers, Fla., along with three-star Solon Page III of Marietta, Ga. — is among the strengths of the Vols’ class and has the potential to be “pretty special.”

“I think this linebacker class has a chance to be sneaky good,” Simmons said. “Solon Page is someone that obviously we’re really high on. Will Ignont saw his stock slide from a lot of people this year, but he is, in my opinion, one of the best in this class. And Shanon Reid is a kid that didn’t get a lot of national buzz that I’m personally very high on.

“To me, that’s a really athletic linebacking group. Maybe Ignont is the only that’s really sort of ready to go right out of the packaging, but I could see us looking up and looking at this linebacking group and thinking it’s pretty special.”

I thought he was ruined. Glad it was just mental confident approach type of stuff.

@FootballScoop: So, can’t tell you exactly when the gates will open; but prepare yourselves… we’re going to see some movement beginning today in the #SEC

Quote from Bob Welton on this class:

“Also, playmakers at receiver. I love these three receivers we have. I would put them up against anybody in the country. (Wide recievers) coach (Zach) Azzanni did a great job of recruiting these kids, and they are dynamic playmakers that will all play next year.”

- 247 (Callahan)

"That's a bold statement, Cotton."

LB class and DB class is nice....and thats two places where we were horrendous.

Also think we signed 3 really good DTs and 4 good WRs
