Why can't a guy have both immediate impact & long term benefit? Don't understand why they're mutually exclusive.

What happens if we have another ridiculous number of injuries but all of these guys were brought in to contribute 2-3 years down the road?

Guys who are talented enough to get drafted won't hang around for 4-5 years. Just won't happen, especially at the skilled positions.

I guess the other issue is what do you mean by contribute. If a player is SEC-ready during his true FR year, he is probably NFL-ready by his JR year. Take Malone: according to many around here, he was a bust...until he wasn't, and now he's trying to get paid. He didn't even really contribute much his first two years, and now he's gone after one decent season. A player's willingness to red shirt is inversely proportional to his field-readiness.

I don't think they are fully mutually exclusive, but they aren't exactly compatible either.

Yes sir. Most blue chippers aren't trying to stay around 4 or 5 years.

If it's Wes Welker your talking about, he was only going to be a GA here. If he accepted a job with the Texans, it's a paid position. Leave Butch alone DA.

I'll never understand the hand wringing over Butch "not hiring" Welker.

He kicked the tires on a entry level college job, then managed to get one that almost assuredly pays better in the Pros which won't involve coddling 18-21 year olds.

Yet some seem absolutely convinced he was begging for work here.

And that's fine. Give me the guy good enough to go pro in three years any day. Nothing wrong with filling gaps with the 4-5 year players, and having them for depth, but the "team full of 4-5 year guys" model hasn't won in the SEC in a generation.

My sincere hope is that this "depth class" nonsense is just spinning by Butch, and he realizes that classes like this don't contend for championships. Especially on top of what many considered to be a "depth class" last year.

I think that I am going to call Dormady "Normandy" and Guarantano "Guantanamo" from now on. I like the more military-esque names better.

He wasn't a high draft pick either. 6th round I believe. Please don't tell the star gazers though. Their heads might explode.

Not really. NFL Draft evaluations are a completely different animal than recruiting evaluations. As an unapologetic stargazer, I realize this.

Also, pegging Brady is pretty much pointless. Some articles say he would have been a 4 to 5 star. Some don't give a star ranking, but say because the reach of recruiting analysts was a fraction of what it is now, he would have been lucky to be evaluated at all. It's discussion that doesn't have any potential closure to it.

Fair enough, this is how nicknames get started.:)

You and me...same wavelength

It's not a Dooley class though

You're right - it's worse.

Current class avg stars on Rivals - 3.29.

Dooley 2012 - 3.41
Dooley 2011 - 3.41
Dooley 2010 - 3.37

Current class Rivals 4* + 5* = 9

Dooley 2012 = 11
Dooley 2011 = 12
Dooley 2010 = 13

Current class avg score on 24/7 composite - 87.14

Dooley 2012 = 88.22
Dooley 2011 = 88.44
Dooley 2010 = 87.22

Current class 4* + 5* on 24/7 composite - 5

Dooley 2012 = 8
Dooley 2011 = 9
Dooley 2010 = 10

Now, one could argue our current staff are better evals, but I don't know. This class is slightly below all 3 Dooley classes and only ranks higher due to sheer size.

People's faith in our staff's evaluations will almost certainly overcome the facts, sir.

They are blind to what happens at every big school. Tennessee players are treated very well. Just as well as Alabama. We just don't have a good head coach

Not true at all. Go get the pictures of TN football players driving Mercedes, Raptors, BMWs and others. Prove it. If we were doing that, Knoxville media would report it first of all. Second, we wouldn't be 6th in the SEC in the rankings

Yikes. Not surprised though. Its been a struggle on the recruiting front for sure.
