Really? I'm not a huge fan of this hire, but you can't judge a guy for how he recruited at North Texas. You know that

Yes, I realize that, everyone simmer. I was responding to the fact the poster was making that Weinke was just washing jock straps at IMG and Canales was a better hire from a recruiting standpoint. Guess I didn't do a good job of making my point. I was trying to say that Just because he supposedly has relationships with high school coaches, that doesn't mean he can pull kids.... they may just think he is a nice guy.... Weinke was a great QB in college at a very high profile school, has been around, learned, and played at the highest level in the NFL, and is much more relevant with recruits than Canales. I am sure Canales is a good coach, but does not bring any excitement to the position that may help recruiting.

I agree with this

The first team on Sirius this morning was discussing the Scott to OC promotion. They didn't say that it was awful, but seemed a bit perplexed by it. Biggest concern was he's never been an OC, and he's getting his start in the SEC!
The wondered why Tennessee cannot attract big name assistants in the offensive side of the ball, even going back to the Debored hire.
They came to the conclusion that the high level of scrutiny CBJ gets is the reason, and bc the uncertainty of his future.
However, Malzahn makes a great hire while having a considerably hotter seat than Jones?!?!

Malzahn has a more proven track record that assistants are willing to accept the risk?

Big names are attracted but butch likes the buddy system. I like Larry Scott though.

I know Jones brought many of his staff with him but that's pretty normal. How many "buddies" has he actually hired? And if you include Canales because they had talked offensive fb before, I'm not going to take it seriously.

Why do people keep saying this? DeBord was a "buddy." Who else other than Gullickson and now Canales?

Scott? No. Shoop? No. Warren? No.

If anything, he hires just as many outsiders as he does "buddies."

Just curious if they mentioned the offensive performance under Debord this year or, were they simply focused on getting marquis names?

Almost every college coach uses the buddy system. It's just how it works in that business.

Any business! I am a sales manager and if I have several candidates with similar attributes but one of them I've worked with before and I know I can count on, I take the known one every time..

No, they mentioned it was excellent, and a top 25 O overall. Haven't looked at the stats, but is that true?
They said Debored was great tho, even for someone that had an administrator roll, and hadn't called an offense for years.

Good point. I remember in Warren's interview the other day he said he had no ties at all to the staff, had never worked with any of them.

Why do you keep calling him Debored? No offense is boring when you score as many points as we did.

I don't have a problem with the new hires. While they're not flashy in perception they may be pretty darn good in function. I always prefer function over form.

Making big changes sometimes ends up with a learning curve year which Coach Jones can ill afford. We upgraded yet maintained continuity.

I think at this point the idea is to start playing better football instead of trying to recruit kids with flashy, high risk hires. The best recruiting tool is developing the talent you already have and winning football games.
