Arent they close? I could see it. Fulmer in Associate AD role that allows him flexibility and time with family. Can focus on fundraising and other aspects. The thing that intrigues me about Fulmer is his ties to so many coaches that would be great to have.
Fulmer and Blackburn are good friends, I doubt they would have problems working together. There is never guarantees in anything, however if they both agree to something like what is being discussed it would indicate that they think they could work together. GBO!!!!
Not sure two heads are better than one. UT needs a leader...a strong leader. Have two cooks in the kitchen rarely works. As the old saying goes, if you have two QBs, you really have none. Kind of like the BOT...too many egos and each trying to swing the bigger schlong. As a result, nothing gets done and no decisions get made. Nah, we need one AD to set the tone and make the decisions.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with that idea if David would go along. Phillip does not have an inflated ego and if any of you have been around him you can vouch for him being as down to earth as anyone. He was that way after he won the national championship and I doubt that has changed. Here's how it should go. Fulmer takes over with a fairly short contract with Blackburn set up the replace in a very few years. I know Blackburn is the AD at UTC but that is nothing like the SEC. Phillip knows the ins and outs and contrary to some people's thoughts he has always wanted every program to thrive. He has had great relationships with the coaches of every UT sport and I don't think that would change now. Phillip can really do wonders in fundraising. Blackburn could manage more of the behind the scenes stuff. It would be a great combo but it probably wont happen. If it did a lot of this board would complain to high heaven because that's all they want to do.
Why hire Blackburn to prop up Fulmer? If Fulmer isn't good enough to do this job on his own, don't hire him for it. Blackburn doesn't need any seasoning with the UTAD. He's already had it.
We need to stop looking for a consolation prize for Fulmer at a time when we need experienced leadership, whether it's Blackburn or any of 50 other qualified AD candidates.
You do realize that he would be coming "out of retirement" (even though he was fired) after 9 years?
I wonder if Blackburn would look at this as a slap in the face?
The way I understand it he has been under the impression that he was being groomed for this job for years. Now the time has come and he could be told that he has to share the position with someone with no experience for the job? I don't know the man so I don't know how he would feel about it.
He hasn't just been sitting around the house. He was heavily involved in restarting ETSU's football program within the last 3 years as well as some other business ventures he has mentioned in various interviews since he left coaching. He has stayed active.
I am not suggesting that all he has done is sit around and drink milk shakes all day.......
