Phil's undoing as a head coach was that he didn't manage his staff well. Two times Cutcliffe left. Both times Fulmer made a bad hire. The second time it cost him his job. I love Fulmer for all of the positive things he did here and all he stands for, but I'm not sure he's the guy I want making coaching hires.

He doesn't make the hires, he approves the allocation of resources for said hires and tries to get top level coaches interested in coming to UT.

Very valid points. I agree. If hired it's a stabilizer hire at AD that makes most of the warring tribes happier while Bev is getting settled in.

Fulmer becomes AD, Butch has a heart attack next season and has surgery. Fulmer names himself interim head coach. They win out last three games. Fulmer fires Butch and hires himself. It's dejavu all over again.

Well they think he's a no brainer as qb coach, not OC or HC.

He won a heisman as a qb, spent 5-6 years in the NFL as a qb, and was an NFL qb coach

Hard for me to think he's not qualified to coach college qb's. also hard to think he wouldn't be able to recruit.

This is the 2nd way to much sense comment in a row. You may want to pace urself. Some of the readers may get overwhelmed

Why is Fulmer the compromise person. Seems he would be old-school UT (which is the complaint against Blackburn) ? Seems those that wanted new blood (or outside the UT family) would be against it. Is it because he has been working donors and has connections within the administration? Lack of CEO experience is troubling as running an AD department put a premium on management skill/style and I do not see it in CPF (my .2 cents which is all it is worth)

I will be OK with Fulmer as a back-up to not getting Blackburn. It tells me Butch will probably be here 3+ years as long as he makes bowl games unless he leaves on his own accord. Holly will get 2-3 years for her recruits to arrive - which will not really help but will get her closer to retirement age since she's 58. Barnes will be fine as long as he can get them to the dance in a couple of years and beyond. Serrano will be given a couple of years and I just don't know who they are going to get to come to a 4 seasons climate school that could possibly be better since he has moved to play more power ball with Simcox on board. Would much rather stay the course with a proven CWS HC. I doubt Phil would have a problem pulling the trigger on incompetency in the other sports, especially track. That was a big seller for some of his skill players when he was coaching.

I am becoming curious if these two strong hires by Butch are a sign that it will be Fulmer. I would be much more comfortable with Butch as our HC with Blackburn or Phil as his boss. They know football and would know what could make each situation better as issues arise, just like Dickey and Woodruff.

I am only OK for Fulmer as AD if we try to get Blackburn and cannot make it work. But the powers that are have not tried to make it work.

SIAP - Rock stated in his introductory press conference that he "stood up" for CBJ at his wedding.

This was covered.

Butch punched one of the bridesmaids in the gut when she looked at him funny. Everyone thought it was a jerk thing to do but Rock stood up for him. I mean she was asking for it. I think that is what he meant. I could be wrong but Butch does have a history of slugging people in the gut for sketchy reasons. TIFWIW #bolognasandwich

I'm just concerned that Fulmer is too nice of a guy to be bold enough to fire someone when it's blatantly apparent they are failing at their job.

So who are you for if the powers that be do not try to make it (Blackburn) work? And how would anyone really know if they did or did not try?

At least three Oregon Ducks football players were hospitalized after enduring a series of grueling strength and conditioning workouts at UO last week, The Oregonian/OregonLive has learned.

Offensive linemen Doug Brenner and Sam Poutasi and tight end Cam McCormick are in fair condition and remained at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield on Monday, a hospital spokeswoman said. They have been in the hospital since late last week after workouts that occurred during the team's return from holiday break.

Poutasi's mother, Oloka, said that her son complained of very sore arms after the workouts and had been diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a syndrome in which soft muscle tissue is broken down with "leakage into the blood stream of muscle contents," according to the NCAA medical handbook. Depending on the severity, it has the potential to lead to damaged kidneys.

"The safety and welfare of all of our student-athletes is paramount in all that we do," Oregon wrote in a statement on behalf of the entire athletic department. "While we cannot comment on the health of our individual students, we have implemented modifications as we transition back into full training to prevent further occurrences.

"We thank our medical staff and trainers for their continued monitoring of the students and we will continue to support our young men as they recover."

Oregon coach Willie Taggart visited Riverbend to meet with some of the hospitalized players before leaving the state to recruit.

Players this week were required to finish the same workouts, which were described by multiple sources as akin to military basic training, with one said to include up to an hour of continuous push-ups and up-downs. The sources said that some players "passed out" and others later complained of discolored urine, which is a common symptom of rhabdomyolysis. After testing, others were found to have highly elevated levels of creatine kinase, an indicator of the syndrome.

Rhabdomyolysis can be triggered after a spike in intensity of an athlete's workouts and by overexertion during those workouts. For the first time since 2004, Oregon did not qualify for a postseason bowl game in 2016, and players were left to exercise on their own during their nearly monthlong break from school. Oregon hired Irele Oderinde its new football strength and conditioning coach earlier this month. He followed Taggart from South Florida, where Oderinde had worked as the school's director of athletic performance since 2014.

The 6-foot-2, 310-pound Brenner is entering his senior season, while the 6-4, 315-pound Poutasi and 6-5, 240-pound McCormick will be eligible to play in 2017 after using last fall to redshirt.

Reports of multiple players being affected by rhabdomyolysis are rare. In August, eight volleyball players from Texas Women's University were hospitalized. In 2011, 13 players from the University of Iowa were hospitalized due to the syndrome after working out during their winter conditioning program. In August 2010, two dozen football players from McMinnville High School were hospitalized, with some requiring surgery, after complaining of intense workouts held in high heat with little water.

The NCAA medical handbook listed "novel workouts or exercises immediately following a transitional period" such as a winter break as one of its 10 factors that can increase the risk of rhabdomyolysis. It also cautioned that "all training programs should start slowly, build gradually, include adequate rest and allow for individual differences."

Rhabdo can ruin your kidneys. Very dangerous

Sounds like they didn't work out much on their own over the break since they didn't make a bowl and the strength coach just started winter workouts at 100.

The players should've kept up their level of fitness more, and I'm sure the new staff wanted to make a point but they probably pushed it a little too far
