Debord wasn't a bad hire. I do think we could have done better. Debord's problem was predictability and his tendency to be too conservative. He also struggled with adjustments. But overall he was a solid B hire imo. And maybe Canales will be great. I do think there are better candidates tho but it just feels like Butch wants his guy and that's Canales.
Canalas could be a pretty good hire considering recruiting wise he can point to contributation of the developmenf of Phillip Rivers anytime he wants.
CBJ has had a good mixture of comfortable hires and outside comfort zone hires IMO. CRG, CLS and CBS were all outside hires. May have missed someone. All coaches have a comfort zone on hires at times. If they do a good job, I have no problem with it. The fact is, even a big name hire can screw it up once they are here. Sometimes it's got nothing to do with what you did in the past, it's about the fit where you are. Happens in CFB and the NFL all the time. Fail at one place, do great at another.
Debord wasn't horrible, but just like Bama in the title game, putting up good numbers in spurts instead of sustaining drives can wear out your defense. While our numbers were good, we were close to dead last in time of possession. So many 3 or 4 and outs. Defense owns a lot of that too, but Debord seemed to sacrifice many, many drives to set up a big play for a score.
So, like most things in life, I don't think debord was as good as the numbers suggest, but he was better than I and many others thought he would be.
And Dobbs did save Debord more often than not IMO. DeBord refused to run Dobbs for a good portion of the season, and our offense was horrible without designed runs for Dobbs.
Yeah I'd be cool with Dorsey too but i honestly don't think Debord recruited that much for us at Tennessee and we were still able to land dormandy and guarantano while he was here so I think canalas will be an upgrade in that aspect. But what Canalas has over the other qb coaches is OC experience which might help Scott come alongYeah, but Debord had that with Brady. Not sure how much that helped. Canales has a lot of experience. Maybe he's a great QB coach! If we hire him, I really hope he is. I just think we could make a hire who is a great coach but would have better recruiting potential by being a better name, a little younger etc. imagine Dorsey on the recruiting trail for instance. Every DT quarterbacks favorite QB is probably Cam Newton. "You a fan of Cam? I've been coaching him for years! Come let me teach you what i taught him." That's a big time recruiting pitch.
SIAP CFN final ranking:
10. Tennessee (9-4)
Season Score: 17.67
2016 Preseason Prediction: 11-1
2016 CFN Preseason Opinion Ranking: 5
Remember, the Volunteers had a whole slew of strong wins early on, beating Virginia Tech and Florida, and the Music City win over Nebraska helped crank up the score. Only Clemson and Alabama had more Quality Wins wins over teams that finished with winning records. This might not have been the season Tennessee was hoping for, but considering the schedule, as it turned out, it wasnt that bad.

Better stock up on juice then, and figure out how to get the AA to look the other way. Butch ain't got a buddy running the AA though, so that's not going to happen.

Weinke and Dorsey have never recruited in the college football ranks so I'm not sure we can just assume the will be good just off name alone. I really don't think debord recruited all that much for us so I think whoever we bring in should be an upgrade for recruiting jmoI agree and that is what I was saying yesterday, maybe a little more on the negative side and got flamed as usual. With recruiting sliding and this being a pivotal time with a lot of talent leaving, I would rather have a younger coach with a name kids can get excited about than basically a steady dinosaur who kids probably have never heard of or care about. Dorsey and Weinke are names recruits know and can relate to with their success and would go a long way pulling talent. Weinke has been a successful QB himself and is now coaching in the NFL... he has to be good enough just on those merits alone to get the job done and get some talent here...
I don't care what position a Wes Welker type would have on the staff, but you can bet it would perk kid's interest and get them on campus. "Hey 4-5* recruit, your new coach is Canales"... "WHO?".... or "hey, 4-5* recruit, did you know Chris Weinke and Wes Welker are now on the staff?".... "Really!? Wow, very cool... I may need to head down there and check them and the school out to see what it has to offer".....
Dobbs limited our offense every bit as much as his ability to run saved it. He turned it over and he can't make intermediate throws.
The bolded has to do with the head coach and not the OC IMO.
