It took this long just to pick a search firm? You can't make this stuff up. I'm starting to get onboard with your theory Ziti.
Canales, Weinke, Durden.
In your opinion, are those pretty much the finalists for the QB coach spot?
Bonus question: rank them from most likely to be hired, to least.
It was suggested to me that there could be one mystery name out there, but I haven't verified that to any level of comfort. I do think it is those three finalists. Dorsey for whatever reason seems to have faded.
I think that, depending upon who you talk to, Weinke is out front but not sure Canales is far behind. Durden is impressive and kind of that guy coming out of nowhere who's at least causing folks to think. really sharp mind, really good rep for developing guys and a relentless recruiter. I know someone who was ready to leave a really good job to join Durden's staff had Durden gotten either the James Madison job a year ago or the UTC job this year.
It was talked about a lot that Fair and UT were in talks about him coming to coach DBs but that has since cooled. Do you know if he cooled on us or did we cool on him in favor or Barlow? If he cooled on us, do you know why? Thanks!
I am not sure that Fair has cooled on UT, but I also know that Shoop has great comfort with Barlow from NC State, whom I reported midweek has had talks already with Bob Shoop, has previously worked with Shoop and is willing to come to UT depending on a formal offer/buyout situation at NC State. NC State upped its asst coach pay recently but also buckled down on buyouts. Now, if Barlow is named Secondary coach/Pass Defense coordinator ... I imagine that circumvents the language per a college coach I spoke with this week.
A is garbage. His current staff was all his doing with a an AD in place and plenty of momentum. Is it a problem now? Probably but he can't blame them for his past hires. Also I think it's a typical Butch excuse so he can hire his buddies.
B is expected when it's a group of guys from another DC picks vs none of his guys.
C again sounds like this is Butch blaming others for his own choices. He did look other places but it was because of the media scrutiny and high expectations. He choked it away by losing to Vandy and now has to save face. He does love TN though so not that he hates his current job he just doesn't want to have fired on resume so there could be half truths to it that he got some assurances to make him fee better along with nobody wanting him elsewhere.
D is prob right
E sounds like excuses
They would never not want us to finish strong in recruiting.
My theory does touch on some things you listed but I don't believe they would sabotage him. We are only saving $2.5 if we let him go next year vs this year. They wouldn't sabotage him for a couple mil.
But I am starting to wonder if they want to bring in the new AD after the hires have been made and maybe that limits who CBJ can hire somewhat. Gives the new AD a clean slate and it will have given the new chancellor the perception of having guided the search that ultimately ends up being the guy everyone wanted all along.
Here's the other thing I wonder.... Take a look at what Cal did. They fired Sonny Dykes in the middle of January and it seems like they did it because he was shopping himself around to other schools. I bet it doesn't set too well with our power players that our head coach is shopping himself around a few months after he got a raise and an extension. That won't be forgotten.
We know where you fall. Butch will never do anything right. Move along.
Also in the Brice article was that we used Parker to get Davenport, and UTC used Parker to hire its last Football coach. We are not obligated to use them even though we have a 5 year contract with them.
Did anyone ask Brice about this never ending AD search? It really makes no sense the moves they are making and at the same time insiders continue to say it Blackburn. Why hire a different firm then? Why waste this money and time at all? Good grief this administration and BOT is the most inept in the country. Will it improve when Haslam is out of office?
3. Have you heard anything about Azzanni possibly leaving if Scott gets OC (which looks likely)?
3. I don't know if Scott gets full OC, if it's Co-OC or what. Gillespie has been running game coordinator, asst head coach, so I wouldn't entirely rule out Gillespie taking on an increased role, either.
I know Z and was the first area reporter to have any sort of convo with him as he was being brought aboard four years ago, simply b/c I lucked into his phone number and he didn't know who was calling him from the 8-6-5. Anyway, Z wants to grow his career and I can't blame him. He was close a year ago at Maryland and also got some consideration this year for Cincy; I still think a spot like UConn or perhaps one yet to come open could be good for him. I know both Georgia State and another school within the past 6 weeks or so had interest.
I think it's hard to say it's accident that the year under Jones in which UT threw the ball the most, this past season, Z's receivers performed their best. I should have better research in front of me, but Malone and Jennings combined this year for 18 receiving TDs. Can't imagine there were very many, if any, better combos in the SEC.
