Spend the Dang Money

Seriously this time 4 years ago the UTAD was in serious trouble. Things are better now financially but this article clearly shows how bad it was.

Tennessee athletic department mired in $200 million debt | NCAA Football | Sporting News

Some of you seem to think there is money just lying around to pay buyouts of coaches and spend twice as much as that (... which it would take ...) to secure your so called flavor of the day "elite coach".

Unless all who support the department plan to donate their entire salary for several years - UTAD can't continue to support the cycle (fire, pay buyout, hire new coach, fire, pay buyout, hire new coach ..... ).

Not buy out coaches, but the incompetence in replacing a leader (AD) is something of legend status. I mean, how long do they think they can go without an AD and be successful?

I blame the retirement of John ward and the years of porky pig as the voice of the vols

Money fixes everything and top notch winning coaches grow on trees. They also like leaving their successful program that they've built.

While I'm of a like mind, I do think it's pretty easy to call for someone else to pony up and pay the bill with THEIR money.

You would think that a school that averages about 99,000+ for 7-8 home games a year, plus SEC network cash, plus Nike cash, could afford to pay for some decent AD/Coaches, especially Football coaches.

I didn't even mention boosters or that we are no longer being sucked dry from derek dooley like a leach victim!

Harbaugh a clown. Big game loser.
Michigan paying him more than Meyer and saban.
The last two years, we paid Butch $416,000 per win. Michigan: $900,000.
Butch is a fine man and good enough, provided he has top position coaches.
Spend the dang money.!

You would trade Jones for Harbaugh all day long and. Twice on sunday

College football is a year round sport with coaches, trainers, cooks, tutors, medical staff, etc working 5+ days a week. All that has to be paid for with only 7-8 days of revenue. Throw in the cost of recruiting, housing, scholarships, stadium renovation and expansion too. With all this it's easy to see why the football program isn't overflowing with cash

and when i talk about money, i'm speaking about the big time boosters that will be funding anything of significance. there's a divide there, and until we have some leadership that can get everyone on the same page, pool those resources, and move forward with a clear purpose....then nothing will change.

so, as i see it, the single biggest issue UT has is it's inability, or plain indifference, to get everyone moving in a clear direction with a singular purpose. too many people wanting different things, for different reasons, and no one at the helm.

and in the meantime, a whole lot of nothing getting done.
I think Phillip Fulmer would be great in some position involving boosters and such.

Funny thing today at work, A guy about my age comes walking down the aisle wearing an Alabama shirt and I said so you guys ready for tomorrow night?...He said bud I'm not gonna lie to you I am scared to death of that team...So I told him who my team was and he said he has a lot of respect for Tennessee but just can't figure out what the are doing coaching staff wise...He said Jones got you guys up out of the gutter but he's not gonna do anymore than what he's done and then he said the funniest thing...He looked at me and said you do know he is stupid right?..LOL...I said yes painfully we have been informed the hard way...He said he and many bama fans were scared to death when we fired Dooley that we would hire Gruden and let him build his own staff...He said if we had done that it would be us and them in the SEC title game every year and couldn't quite figure out why UT didn't get that done and settled on Jones...I said the Head coach isn't the only one that's stupid over there.

I may be over simplifing things but typically you get what you pay for... Invest the money wisely by hiring quality coaches and you shouldn't have to waste money on buy outs later. Plus all the extra revenue that is brought in by winning. In the words of Van Wilder " No one wants to celebrate a loss".

We should have outbid Texas for Charlie Strong for $5.2 million.

If you look around, there are LOTS & LOTS of other times when schools have gone for the big $ hire and fallen flat.

.......notre dame is just one example

The Ravens let their assistant OLine coach (Todd Washington) go. I think he would be an amazing hire! He's developed Ronnie Stanley very well this year & their guard Yanda has been a pro bowler several times. I think we should reach out to him, in a big way! We need NFL level coaches on our staff, badly! Rob Rogucki was also let go as their S&C coach. The Ravens line ranked 13th this season, slipping from the top 10, but Washington looks to be a really good candidate for OLine coach!

Charlie Strong would not have been considered a big time hire IMO. He was on the same level as Butch.
