Honestly it's unrealistic to expect a viable list of candidates. Too many variables unknown to us in the great unwashed.

Hey a lot of fans want him fired yesterday and if you do it mid-season you better have a list now.

That's exactly what I've been saying. They have for some time taken advantage of the loyalty of Tennessee fans. That's also why we'll never hire a big time head coach. There is financially no.reason to. They can bring in some no name and the fans will get on board for at least three years and they may occasionally catch lightening in a bottle.

Your last sentence describes almost every program in the country.

Add Bob Woodruff and Gus Manning as well to this list. They bled orange. Woodruff retired in 1985. I think Dickey replaced him if I remember right. We were strong under Woodruff in many sports under his tenure.

He did. Woodruff was excellent. Most on here have no idea who they were - just names from the past. But they built on the foundation for excellence during their times on the hill that has clearly departed in the last decade or so.

I can't believe people think it's crazy to say that a team losing its starting QB, RB, WR, best DE in 30+ years, LB and CB - on top of many depth players - is going to be one game worse than the previous year.

QB- loss
RB- starting RB was out half the season / wash
WR- still have 2 starters on a team that didn't pass the ball a lot/ wash
DE- loss
LB- no change JRM was out most all of the season
CB- Cam was out most the season/ wash

So net wise, we lose Dobbs, Barnett, and Malone. So yeah, 1 or 2 games less.

Do you even VolNation, bro?

I think WR is unquestionably a net loss. I'm also still not so sure Byrd won't be on defense next year.

That said 9-3 or 8-4 is my prediction, so I agree the losses won't have much effect in matching 2016s record.

Conliffe has been getting several crystal balls to Tn and is visiting soon. Why do you think he isn't coming here?
Everything I've seen is leading to PSU, however I was mainly talking about top 100 type players, not fringe 4*. I also think he's a good player like I said about Sterling, but I'm just making a point

WR is a loss. No deep threat or proven guy outside of Jennings

You guys act like players can't improve and step up. Malone wasn't a loss until he all the sudden became a boss. Now he's not replaceable apparently.

We've got Byrd, Jennings and Smith coming back along with several young guys who can make an impact.

Almost every program in the country doesn't have the resources that Tennessee has. We are elite in every way except administration desire to compete with the big boys. If you look at our facilities, we are on the level of Bama, OSU, Michigan, and many more, but we hire coaches like we're Mississippi State.

Johnson, Calloway, George, and Williams shall be good.

Sure they can improve. To the level to replace Malone's production this year? I'm not seeing it at this point. Especially with an unknown offensive coaching staff.

I just don't take significant year to year player improvement for granted. If it happens, great, but a lot more goes into it than just passage of time.

I was joking with a State fan buddy about the same thing.

I know what you're trying to say but Florida hired Jim McElwain, LSU hired Oregeron, Georgia hired a coordinator, South Carolina hired a fired coach, etc. Do I think our admin sucks? Yes. Do I think that they go out and intentionally seek to hire a guy on the cheap every time? No. I don't. Given where our program was Butch was about as good as we could do.

The thought that we are gonna hire some great coach with a name is crazy. It's about timing now more than facilities and money. Everyone has money and facilities and everyone is taking gambles on coaches. It's just how it is.
