I love Dobbs.....but his standard for passing accuracy, running thru progressions, reading defenses and getting us into a better play, and finding the open receiver is NOT the standard we want at UT......but he can extend plays and he is a heck of a runner and extremely hard to tackle.....

He IS A GREAT ATHLETE and fiery competitor who plays the QB position....He is a great kid with incredible character and is second only to Manning as an ambassador for UT football....

but he is NOT a great QB...and his QBR reflects it....especially against the better teams with better defenses...

He will be an H-back, TE, or WR in the NFL is he gets a shot.....

Here's hoping that JG or QD will prove to be great QBs....and not just good athletes playing the position

Lulz. Dobbs will be a QB in the NFL. Also, his QBR was good this year...but I guess you decided not to research that. Also if you would have paid attention he improved every single year.

Sorry...but simply cannot agree with this....

Sumlin and Freeze have gotten Ws against Bama, true enough...but they HAVEN'T lost to SCe and only Freeze has lost to Vandy this year with a true freshman QB on the road and a decimated D.....

and both have beaten CBJ head-to-head....Freeze beat the crap out of us....and took both FSU and Bama down to the wire this year.....

And both have beaten the Barn, Arky, etc...etc.....

Ole Sis did have that bad loss to Vandy this year....

But--playing in the SEC west, beating us head-to-head, and victories over Bama and other good teams in the West (that we haven't been able to beat--Auburn, Arky, LSU--for Ole Sis--would be adequate reasons to conclude that those guys are better coaches...

CBJ's quality win is against whom?? UGa?? Fla?

Va. Tech which whipped Arky. Florida which whipped LSU. Georgia which whipped Auburn. The notion that the West was somehow better this year was 90 percent myth. And come on, I don't see you dogging OM for going 5-7 season or comparing their season to our 9-4 season so why on Earth would you compare a 6-6 Tennessee team against a 9-4 OM team that just happened to be one of the better teams OM has had in the modern era and one of their best teams ever?

Furthermore, playing in the mighty West doesn't cut it when we also play Bama and had one of the toughest schedules in CFB.

How did Weinke's interview go?

From everyone I've spoken too, it was a solid interview and he was impressive. I don't think Butch is rushing this decision. Canales will be in town tomorrow and then I think there are a few other QB candidates he will interview/talk to as well.

I'm willing to get on board with JG if he wins the job. Are you willing to do the same if QD wins it? No, you'll be crying for JG at first INT.

That's the difference between us. I'm a true Vol fan. You're a wanna be talent scout.

Home run post, IMO.

Hugh Freeze lost to Memphis in a 10-3 season with multiple NFL players. How would that go over here?

He is a good coach, but his status fell a bit this year. Lost to Vandy, Arkansas, and MSU this year.

You're right. My point is UTs scheme causes guys to sit on their heels more so than firing off. Also they do not put a hat on a hat like other RPO offenses. I don't think it will matter who is playing in there healthy or not. I think there would certainly be improvement of course when guys are full strength, but App State looked like a bunch of world beaters up front against that O-line. Again I know guys were injured but Ive seen Coleman Thomas get tossed too many times while squating like a baseball catcher and never really moving forward or backwards. Maybe if Scott is in charge of the offense he can supplement some of that and we can use better fronts to attack a defense.

I don't think Nebraska would agree with your assessment..

We just lost to Vandy and South Carolina with the east and Sugar bowl on the line. Neither of those teams had an NFL QB.

So? I didn't say that was good.

Just that Hugh definitely lost some status this year. We will see how Lynch turns out but doesn't mean anything when you are merely drafted. Hugh had a probable pro QB in Kelly along with Treadwell, Nkemdiche (did get hurt in the game), Evan Engram, and the list goes on.

QD will start. I bet Butch has more trust in him than the others. Also, from the reports, JG throws with nice velocity but is sometimes inaccurate. This reminds me of the Worley/Dobbs situation. And i feel like Butch is to stubborn to take a chance. We were all shocked about how good Dobbs was and how Butch didnt see it, or didnt wanna chance it or upset the veteran.

I think you that Butch was determined to redshirt Dobbs until he had no choice due to injury. That would have worked out for us to have Dobbs back one more year, He could have had an incredible season next year. It would seem that Butch knew more about Dobbs' potential than the rest of us.

I expected to get dogged for my comments....but Freeze and Sumlin have beaten both Bama and head to head....

Both have beaten CBJ head to head....

And I'm not trying to "dog" anyone.....

And beating teams who beat other SEC teams DOESN'T mean anything.....We had to have a miracle to beat a UGA team that a 5-7 Ole Sis team wore slap out and beat by 31 points....So, using your logic.....a 5-7 Ole Sis team should line up and beat us by 28 points--

Furthermore.....our season would've probably ended up 7-5 or 6-6 IF we would've lost Dobbs like Ole Sis lost Kelley.....

Good grief man.....do you actually watch the games or just the stat sheet???

Not well. But Freeze is extremely overrated, so I wouldn't give him the benefit of the doubt.

Worley was better than Dobbs his senior year and Dobbs' sophomore year

I've heard people say that, but we all remember what happened when's Dobbs came in that sophomore year. We don't make a bowl without Dobbs that year. We get throttled but SC with Worley

We get it. But it's not as black and white as you want it to be.

Wonder what you would say if Butch had lost to Memphis?

People forget we had a really good defense at the beginning of the season. For all the bashing some do on Shoop, we don't beat APPY St, Va Tech or Florida without the defensive stops and turnovers forced. Also was big in UGA game at times. Beginning of year our offense was the issue and the end it was defense thanks to injuries

I've tried to raise this point of view in a couple of past discussions also, the Florida game they went the entire 3rd and part of the 4th quarter without gaining a first down! That was huge, our offense was hot, the defense did a 3 and out then the offense goes back out and scores. Quite a combination. Have to go back to you tube and watch from time to time..

Agreed. The surest way to become sports media darling is to beat Bama. Hell, TAMU built an entire stadium based almost solely off the momentum and money gained from beating Bama one time. That win also secured Sumlin an incredible contract entirely too soon into his tenure at A&M.

But... Bama is currently a Goliath. Hell, maybe a Leviathan is a better description since they really are that much bigger, that very few can knock off these days and even then it requires an incredible amount of luck. Almost, beating them last season carried us pretty darn far in the media's eyes and probably set us up for some 'fun while they lasted' but ultimately unrealistic expectations (we really were hyped over the moon going into this season and I don't mean us competing for and/or winning the East which was a more than reasonable expectation in my eyes).

What amazes me though, is how Freeze has managed to still ride that wave despite OM's pitiful season, a NCAA investigation that will lead to serious consequences, and OM pretty much admitting that they'll get a bowl ban. I remember back when the season was young and the media kept claiming that OM was the best 2 loss [insert number of losses] team ever and they towed that line until it became impossible to tow it any further. But I think OM is so new to success that there just aren't that many who are going to put serious expectations on them (same for A&M).

OTOH, Tennessee is still seen as a blue blood even by those who claim that we've lost that designation and so any good roster we field is going to be met with much higher expectations by both ourselves and the media and much of that is warranted. We absolutely have to find a way to live up to it though.

Pretty much agree with you on the coaching/potential coaching hires. I'm particularly excited about Rock G. I just have a feeling he will get us back to the hard-nosed and disciplined teams we were used to seeing under Jones. But, I also think he'll help us produce players that are even tougher and stronger than before.

:hi: We are on the same page with this.

I hope Butch will reach higher and not to just the comfortable that he feels he can control. I know he thinks a lot of Canales and none of us really know the whole story. However, Canales is clearly mid-major level as a coach. I think that has been Butch's biggest challenge. There have been others on his staff that are clearly not to the level a 'blue blood' program should have as well as players on the field that are not P5 quality, while less experienced P5 talent with upside sat. He needs to be challenged in his thinking to grow and reach his full potential, which is why I beat the hire a football savvy AD now drum. This applies to coaches he employs as well as players he uses on the field. The program and fans need for him to be the answer. We've all been through too much for him to fail. We all know 2017 is a make or break season and it has a lot of fans on edge.

Will be happy to see a QB surpass Dobbs' W/L record. The floor has been raised by Dobbs body of work.

SMH......

I did both some research and watched every game Dobbs played....and that USCe game his SR. year was not any better than any game he played as a FR---with a massive QBR of 11!!!

App State 26
VT 66
Ohio 68
Fla 55
Uga 74
aTm 44
USCe 11
KY 96
Mizz 100
Vandy 80
Neb 90

threw out Bama and Tenn Tech.....

That's NOT VERY GOOD for a SR QB in the SEC by anyone's estimation....

And no....he won't be a QB in the NFL...
