Prepare to be underwhelmed again on OC Hire

I don't see why anybody would expect a big name hire at OC when the coach's job is in jeopardy heading into next year, especially when we are losing big pieces at quarterback, running back, and receiver. It just wouldn't make any sense for an OC with good options to come here right now.

It's called faith. A good coach would have faith in his abilities and a smart coach would hire a god coach when he's on the hot seat. This writer nailed Butch down with his predictability. His play calling is just as predictable.9 wins is his ceiling with a loaded roster. 5-7 without the talent and better staff.

WTH is wrong with UT athletics? Seriously

I think most of our fans are just tired of mediocrity, and losing to USC and Vandy is just that. This fan base deserves a coach who can produce a competitive team. No one is sure this guy can do it.

When you look at the record of this program over the last 10 years and the fact that you are still putting 100,000 fannies in the seats, then the problem is not your fan base. Stop blaming the fans for setting expectations here. Lack of expectations will lead to apathy and that will kill a program.

Very true. Your statement, "No one is sure this guy [meaning Butch Jones] can do it [meaning win championships] should be posted with a sticky on this forum for the next 10-11 months. Heck it should be on VolNation's logo (lol). The uncertainty with Butch is the reason for such a heated divide in our fan base. Unless Butch lays a 6-6 egg or goes 10-2 in 2017, we will continue to be extremely divided. That's why I've said 8-4 next year is about the worst thing that can happen with the fan base and really for the program. 9-3 or 7-5 is only slightly better as one of these records or the other will sway a little more of the fan base in one of the two directions in their evaluation of Jones, but not enough possibly to make the final eval on coach.

Before injuries? When was that?

Seems they got started before halftime of the Appy State game. In fact, wasn't there something about Coleman Thomas playing hurt? I remember Jashon needing attention that night.

Point is the time before injuries was an extremely small time period for this season.

Jones will pick a figurehead offensive coordinator that will fall in line with his system and play calling. No great changes or improvements will come from this.

Jones is guaranteed millions of dollars whether he keeps this job or not after next year. He will also land at a decent mid-level program that will pay him quite well.

Look at Charlie Strong. He came out just fine.

Chris Weinke, the quarterbacks coach for the rams, is interviewing right now. We may have found our guy. I guess Gulickson is the connection.

I would be thrilled to get him for QB coach. Not many better than him. Plus recruiting in FLORIDA would go up.

Actually, I've been underwhelmed by Dave Hooker as a reputable journalist for about 15 years or so. Almost always picked against Tennessee even when the Vols were good back in the mid years of Fulmer. He has every right to craft hit pieces on his alma mater. Gets him the clicks he needs to stay viable I guess. Couldn't stand him when he was on the radio here in K-town. That said, he may be proven right about the OC hire. If not, most will quickly forget his hit piece and move on.

Hadn't thought of that angle. I had forgotten how successful he was as a player in college 32-3 with a Heisman, playing in two Ntl Championship games, winning one, and would have played in 3 had he not gotten hurt at the end of 1998. Of course his pro career was not so noteworthy with the Panthers, and it's hard to gauge his QB coaching skill considering his HC was Mr. No Offense Jeff Fisher.

Once again this is so underwhelming and that's not okay. This isn't a MAC team where it's okay to groom an inexperienced coordinator rather than shoot for a proven guy, this is big time college football. Right now Nick Saban is letting a former NFL HC and USC HC walk as his OC to be a HC elsewhere and is replacing him another former USC HC and well respected offensive mind. Urban Meyer has a former college and NFL HC as his D Coordinator. Freakin Ed Orgeron just tapped one of the most proven up and coming OC's in the nation to be his OC. Jim McElwain just promoted former Miami HC Randy Shannon to be his DC. And we're excited about the Rams QB coach or the Panthers QB coach, two teams whose QBs had AWFUL seasons. Or we are excited by a good recruiter and TE coach becoming our OC?

TN is not a MAC school, we should have the cream of the crop as our coordinators. Promoting from within is unacceptable, bringing someone who has never been an OC at any level is unacceptable (Weinke and Dorsey). Snagging Bob Shoop is the kind of move we need, he's a proven coordinator at the college level. Don't care who it is, but we need to set our sights higher rather than settling for another name we know. Butch needs to go and steal someone's OC, get the best candidate in the country.

Would you work for someone with an egghead ego.

The fixes for that are mainly OL position coaching and S&C related.

Not necessarily. Jones inherited an OL with 5 NFL caliber upperclassmen on it. They took a step back in performance with some former OL's questioning the techniques they were being taught. It is more reasonable to assume there are issues with the system based on that.

Very well said. Butch is about control. These other coaches are hiring to win thier division, conference championships. There is a reason he hasn't won the east, we just provide the excuses

I think we're kind of saying the same thing; that the problem is with OL coaching and development -- blocking reads, assignments, technique, angles, leverage, hands, fundamentals, etc. S&C is critical to OL development and performance too; strength, endurance, playing mean, etc. No offensive system will be consistently successful unless it's O-line play is.

No. I'm actually arguing that in part due to the backsliding of a known great OL plus 3 years of failure suggest it is the system that puts OL's in a position to fail.

If Jones has tolerated or not recognized poor coaching and development on the OL for 4 years... that's even worse coaching malpractice.

Why are you talking Tennessee football with a bama troll?

I'm getting the feeling that it's gonna be Larry Scott as OC and Chris Weinke as QB coach. The more I learn about Weinke as QB coach the more I like. His ties to IMG are huge in recruiting and the NFL QBs he's worked with who are having success in the NFL is impressive. And I like Coach Scott I definitely feel more comfortable with him instead of Z.

Thus wouldnt be my first option I'd prefer, Helfrich or Cumbie, or another proven guy. But I think if it's Scott and Weinke it could be pretty good.

How can we expect big things from a coach that thinks small? I mean he thinks 3 bowls in a row is a great accomplishment.
