If Helfrich doesn't come...

wasn't a troll job. Butch decided not a fit and Helfrich may very well agreed with Butch.. Helfrich doesn't need a job so he can be very picky. Butch doesn't want anyone unless they fit his comfort level. Helfrich didn't

I was hoping that Helfrich would come, but alas it looks like it may not happen. Who would you pick if you had a choice?

Unless a ton of money got thrown at him, I don't get that one either.

Well, I looked up info on him, and he is actually Co O.C. so I guess he does not get paid as much, but he does not have experience coaching QB, which is needed unless Butch found someone just for QB coach.

I've been as critical of Butch as anyone, but I don't think Debord leaves unless Butch has an upgrade in his back pocket. Trading Jancek for Shoop and Debord for Helfrich are, to me, great moves.

Based on year one it wasn't. Gave up 100 yards more a game and 10 ppg on defense. How much was that Shoop/Injuries/Other staff? Don't know but stats are in.

I think Jeff Scott from Clemson is a good one I have heard mentioned.

Where have you heard his name? He'd be somebody to look at, but I do not see him leaving Clemson. He played at and graduated from Clemson. Also, he is Co-Oc/WR. We need a guy with QB coaching experience.

Dorsey seems to be a great candidate for a QB coach, but why would he be a good choice for OC? However, I guess at this point we all know it is Bucth's offense and we might as well just get a great QB coach to develop our players.

These are the candidates I would talk to and have on my list (in no order):

Lincoln Riley, Oklahoma
Jeff Scott, Clemson
Mark Helfrich, Oregon
Sonny Cumbie, TCU
Eric Morris, Texas Tech
Mike Yurcich, Oklahoma State
Sterlin Gilbert, Texas

I am sure there are more names out there that I'd be fine with, but this is what I thought of off the top of my head. Obviously a lot of long shots, but I would at least try to have conversations with these guys. Riley, Helfrich, Cumbie, Gilbert, and Yurcich have QB coaching experience.

I do not think we can afford to take the chance on promoting somebody within or hiring a coach with no OC experience. We need a solid guy with a proven track record. We know that Cumbie was interested when the job was previously open and is again interested. What do you guys think?

It's a good list, Gilbert just took a job at South Florida. Debord is really the only coach that has any NFL experience and he's gone. I think all of the guys you mentioned would be fine but if we are going to beat Bama we need some NFL guys that know the x's and o's and none of these guys have any experience of that kind.

JMO.

In your opinion, do you think NFL experience is that important for NCAA? I understand it goes a long way in influencing recruits to commit, especially if they are learning from guys with NFL experience, but I am not so sure it always translates to success on the field. In my opinion the college game is so different compared to the NFL.

The perfect guy would have NFL experience, but also success in college too. Also, I think if we are hiring solely a QB coach from the NFL it does not matter as much. You can either coach a position or not, but if we are going to pull an OC from the NFL ranks I would like him to have a proven record of success in college too and be able to recruit. You see a lot of guys like Saban, Kiffin, or Kelly who do great in college, but no so much in the NFL.

I do think it's very important, especially as it relates to offense and defense. Obviously there are "system" coaches like an Urban Meyer or like Chip Kelly and they are really good teachers of that system.

Then there are guys like Saban or Harbaugh who not only have NFL experience but also hire a few folks with NFL experience.

I've always looked at it like this. When the off season comes for NFL coaches they study football, they still show up at work everyday and do football. College coaches don't get that opportunity because their off season, what little there is, is spent recruiting.

I think the experience Debord had made Jones comfortable with tweaks along the way and I think he's trying to find that again but realizes too that he's going to have young QB's and that they may not be able to what Dobbs did.

A guy like Greg Roman for instance. He was with Harbaugh at Stanford and then with the 49ers and if the NCAA allows for another assistant I bet he ends up at Michigan.

That particular guy probably isn't the best fit for what CBJ wants, but someone LIKE that would be great.

Helfrich damn sure isn't going to be a QB coach here or anywhere else, not at this level. It sounds very much like DeBord was given a "thanks for the memories" nudge, as no OC is leaving the SEC to go to Indiana; the grandkids story is just that--a story.

Do NOT hire anybody named "Sterlin" (seriously?) or Sonny. That's all I ask. This is football not stock-car racing, though I do realize it's the south.

Ahhhh, ok. We need to hire someone based on the attractiveness of their birth name -- not their professional accomplishments and experience. Got it. Great plan.

I guess Jim Bob Cooter would never be on your list.

Sanders wasn't the problem at UT, he just didn't have the equity Cut had. He's a very good coach.

Perhaps you were asleep in the mountains when Sanders was our OC. He was TERRIBLE. We got worse every year he was OC, and our deteriorating offense cost us recruits and directly led to the demise of the program under Fulmer. Under Sanders our QBs were always trying to change the play at the LOS and we were slow/late getting plays off. We'd take timeouts, come out on the field, and then there would be confusion about the play. I'm sure he's a better coach now than he was then, but that's a pretty low bar. Sanders had never been an OC and was out of his depth. I attended some UT practices his first year--and Chavis was always barking, you could hear him cracking on mistakes--and Sanders was very quiet.

name is out there as a QB coach perhaps but until OC determined not sure QB will be named.

What names are you hearing...obviously you have heard a few but we have all heard those too. Any real insight other than restating what we've all heard rumored?

LWS what are your thoughts on the news that AD search will go well into the spring? Hyams article yesterday sounded as if they haven't even begun- did Davenport say no to Blackburn? It has been rumored that she doesn't like that he's a Tennessee guy. I sincerely hope that's not true for many obvious reasons. The ineptness of this admin is unbelievable. Thanks for your insight.

Not saying he'd be my top choice, but have to think based on what's been said TJ Weist is a candidate. He coached w Butch at Cincinnati. Was the OC at South Florida this year and their offense put up great numbers. He stepped in as HC for the bowl game and beat South Carolina. Currently without a job...
