The defense has been inconsistent, but if it continues like it was tonight, we will win a lot of games. We still need to get more defensive rebounds when we get the stops, but i am impressed with how well this young team has played.
Crazy stat I just ran across in an article on the defense:
"Tennessees defense was allowing 360.8 yards per game through the first five games of the season to rank 43rd in the country. In the last three games, the Vols have allowed 627.7 yards of offense to fall to 110th in the country in total defense (460.2 yards per game)."
I know a lot of fans hate hearing it but injuries absolutely gutted us. Without them we simply don't lose against Vandy and USC and we also likely pull off the win against TAMU despite all the turnovers we committed that game.
That said, even though we will have a few players like Kirkland and Sutton who benefited from the extra time to heal I'm still nervous about the D tomorrow. I know that as a unit they want a chance at redemption from those last three games but when you play 27 different starters on defense in a single season even the word catastrophic seems a bit lacking to describe the injury situation given that term is often used for teams that only lose something like 3 or 4 starters on a unit.
Hopefully, just getting a few of our key players healthier and giving the guys who have been forced to play positions they're not entirely comfortable with or physically built for more time to learn and improve takes us back around to being much more functional on D despite the situation. There's always a tipping point with injuries even when you have depth and I'm hoping the health scenario has tipped back to enough to handle Nebraska.
Need Fulk back in the worst way to help there and on O. Some say RS him with the injury. Depends on his recovery IMO. If he can be back in early February and have a month to work back into it along with the team being on the bubble - it might be worth it.
So our best defense was ranked outside the top40 after playing App St, VT, and Ohio? Tell me more about how awesome this defense would've been without injuries.
We gave up a million yards to Mizz, UK, and Vandy. We let Kyle Shurmur throw for 416 yards in one game. Do you know his next best game? 279 yards against Western Kentucky and it was an OT game. You can blame it all on injuries but there is no way we had the worst defensive talent (after injuries) our opponents faced yet we had the worst defense most of our opponents faced.

Can't say it enough. We need to get our S&C program back on track.
That is the biggest hire.
I would go after Cochran and over him 1m a year. He is 37 and a huge reason Bama has stayed at the top.
As it's been reported by others, we have confirmed with our own sources that defensive lineman Dimarya Mixon will not play today.
According to our sources, Mixon was sent home for disciplinary reasons. He was here for practice earlier this week, but has been sent home and will not play today.
